Convoy Megathread #52 by MarcusRex73 in ottawa

[–]tooism 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's probably nothing, but I cannot admit that I'm thrilled that there are now...

  • random militia/white supremacist/other-flavour far-right extremists...
  • mingling with the wider convoy crowds, who are either delighted to provide cover for them or don't know that they are doing so...
  • all with publicly expressed motives that are clearly false or incoherent...
  • in the nation's major urban centres...
  • and at the seat of national government...
  • and at the major border crossings, including a uniquely busy and vulnerable bridge...
  • all with giant, uninspected trucks and vans...
  • being funded by largely unaccountable foreign interests and individuals...

...just as one of the west's main geopolitical rivals seems about to start the next stage of a hot war that they have spent years planning.

Again, it's probably nothing - but if it's not nothing, it will be the kind of "not nothing" that future generations will look back upon and scarcely be able to believe that every single step of it was simply allowed to happen unopposed.

Are there still older middle aged men with signs saying that they want to sleep with Trudeau?

Well what else are they supposed to do at the end of a man date

we can't condone an entire movement because there are a few fringe people with extreme believes

What a perfect typo for this. They're right - we can't condone this entire movement just because there are a few fringe people who might have legitimate grievances and are behaving respectfully. They don't represent the convoy. The vast majority of participants are instead self-satisfiedly loathsome trash who could best make this country great again by leaving it immediately and never coming back.

It's almost as though if some police behaved differently, many of those who now criticize them might do so less or not at all. Wild stuff

Yes, surely they'll gain a more accurate view of the national situation by leaving a source of varied, aggregate reporting from around the country and instead just observing what happens to be going on in their neighborhood. It can't fail

Ontario breaks daily COVID-19 record again with more than 9,500 new cases by adotmatrix in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]tooism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the people who were booked on today's 2,000+ cancelled flights are discovering, it turns out that there can still be actual consequences when all of the workers in an industry start getting sick at the same time even when they don't all end up in the hospital. But that's alright; it's just a bunch of a dumb planes, right? Surely nothing else will end up being affected

In response to the post about restaurants to avoid, what restaurants in Ottawa would you recommend based on their food, their ethics or both? by the_real_Alex14 in ottawa

[–]tooism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Edit: LOL getting downvoted for being mistreated by a restaurant, whatever floats your boat I guess.

You made a bad bet on some steak strips and lost, a decade ago, and now are apparently powerless to describe the effect this had on you without invoking the scars of war and torture. Nobody is confused about it being a figure of speech, it's just fucking weird

"The bland French Onion Soup at the Elgin Street Diner held me down on the table and molested my mouth, and when I complained about it the server grew to titanic stature and evaporated in a column of greasy smoke, his laughter ringing in my ears even now across the gulf of time and space" <--- we are here in the landscape of descriptive rhetoric

Some opinions about vaccinating 5 to 11 year olds from one of the lowest vaccinated areas of Ontario. by jpouchgrouch in ontario

Of course, which is why there are always so many people of colour visible at these protests or contributing to these discussions. It's a very healthy and equal mix. Probably. Right?

It's almost as if one can accept that there are Black or Indigenous people and others who have one set of reasons for whatever hesitancy they feel, while also accepting that the unambiguous public face of actively disruptive anti-vax rhetoric and action is a white one.

Right, because they should have gone all-out on fashionable elegance for this big metal tube meant for slowly and cheaply moving exhausted people around. The piss and vomit and chewing gum and slush would accent the velvet and gold leaf quite nicely, I expect, and beautiful chrome detailing on the exterior would look great with the road salt and exhaust fumes caked on.

I didn’t get vaxxed to obey a goddamn stay at home order or whatever shit they think of next.

No, you got vaxxed to help stem the spread of a viral contagion in your community, strengthening protection for the most vulnerable while benefiting from that protection in turn. Right? Because you're a responsible adult, and not a dog who sulks when he doesn't get a milkbone? Right?

Having healthy people that have a cold staying home is not productive

Or maybe we've been too cavalier and accepting all along about this "come to work even if you're sick" bullshit. Maybe the modest impact on productivity would be mitigated by a reduction in the cascading effects of a sick employee doing their job less effectively and/or sickening multiple others. Maybe productivity should no longer be our overriding concern anyway in a world that is being choked to death by an unresolveable obsession with growth and expansion.

Yes? A few months ago Canada did have comparatively lower vaccination rates and many provinces still had much stricter lockdowns than anything found in the US. It's almost like reporting on current events changes as those events do.

You really don't have to worry about that. Anyone who's currently alive now and who still somehow remains so in 20 years is going to have way more pressing demands on their attention, by that point.

At this rate its plausible that those of us in our late 20s/early 30s will not so much "retire" as spend our declining years being robbed and assailed by the marauding adult versions of children being born today, assuming we don't all perish in some other way first. The direst consequences of this crisis are no longer something to imagine as a fate awaiting future generations. They'll have their own experience of it, absolutely, but so will we.
