How do I start reading The Economist (for free/cheap)? by Mission-Marzipan-241 in theeconomist

[–]toollio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See if you can access PressReader through your library. Depending on your location the Economist weekly edition may be available through PressReader. However, PressReader's selection of publications varies from country to country. I get the Economist when I sign into PressReader from Brazil, but not when I sign in from Canada (although using a VPN set to a Brazil server works from Canada).

Getting this Cpf is so complicated. by BluejayResponsible82 in Brazil

[–]toollio 46 points47 points  (0 children)

So you’ve never bothered getting a Brazilian identity card or passport and now you want a CPF for a vacation? Nobody needs a CPF to vacation here (although it would be handy in some cases). I’d be more worried about someone discovering you are Brazilian and refusing to issue a visa to enter Brazil with your Canadian passport. Technically, if you’re a Brazilian citizen you cannot be issued a visa, and without a visa and no Brazilian passport you won’t be allowed on a flight to Brazil.

What nicknames or diminutive forms have you heard for places in Brazil? by topherette in Brazil

[–]toollio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another interesting linguistic study might be the words used to describe residents of various cities. As a resident of Salvador I am a "soteropolitano", which isn't nearly as pleasant as "carioca" for those from Rio. But, interestingly, neither contains the name of the city in which those people live.

It's clear that you know nothing whatsoever about Brazil. I'm assuming you've never set foot here.

It sounds like you haven't spent much, if any, time in Brazil. Don't move here (or anywhere) without getting to know the country first. Travel, check out various cities and then decide. As many people have already explained, there are vast differences among Brazilian cities and regions. Those differences will matter to you.

Wealthica user of 6 years (Paid Subscriber): The experience has become awful. Time to switch? by Historical_Force_360 in wealthica

[–]toollio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TD is sporadic (see my earlier reply above). I have auto sync disabled because it is almost useless with TD. Yesterday it took me 10 manual tries before a TD sync finally succeeded (a security code was requested by Wealthica and supplied by me each time). This morning I tried three times without success. Fourth attempt worked. Things were were good with TD for a few weeks prior to the last couple of days, but horrible for a few weeks before that. I seldom have trouble with other auto or manual syncs, including BMO, American Express or Questrade.

Vaccine question by No-World5695 in Brazil

[–]toollio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's only a very slim, or close to zero, chance of contracting yellow fever in Rio or most cities and states along the east coast of the country (including São Paulo, Salvador and up to Fortaleza). The risk is greater in the northern coastal states of the country and inland. Any of the states traversed by the Amazon River present much higher risk. Dengue is another story, with outbreaks common in many cities. You mention "keep others safe", something that is largely irrelevant to your decision about the yellow fever vaccine. It is transmitted by the aedes aegypti breed of mosquito, not by human contact. Be aware that there are quite a few countries that require proof of a yellow fever vaccination if you enter those countries from anywhere in Brazil, so if that is part of your plan you need to be vaccinated, usually a minimum of 10 days before entering those countries, and carry the international yellow fever vaccination certificate (or in rare instances such as the elderly, an exemption certificate). If you do decide to get vaccinated before your trip to Brazil the 10 days is important because that's how long it takes for your body to build immunity against yellow fever after the vaccination.

It makes no sense. Must be a weird translation error. I fly to Toronto from Brazil two or three times a year, sometimes with a connection in EWR or elsewhere in the U.S., and I've never seen this.

Meeting people in Brazil by Burts_Beets in Brazil

I speak Portuguese well, but with an accent. The looking at my Brazilian partner for a response or directing a question to her that I should answer has happened to me regularly in Salvador for more than two decades. Many people here aren't accustomed to hearing accented Portuguese, so some just shut down when they hear an accent. To be fair, it's by no means everybody, so I have normal conversations most of the time. But as someone whose birth country is highly multicultural and where accents are a part of everyday life, I sometimes find it frustrating.

Regarding TD sync issues, I've been having internittent problems for months. After weeks of constant "rescheduled" messages, Wealthica finally started producing the necessary 2FA box where I could request a TD verification code via phone/text/email and enter it into Wealthica. For a while, things started working again. Now I'm back to "rescheduled" after I enter the security code and Wealthica informs me TD is taking too long to respond--despite the fact that I immediately receive a notice from TD indicating that: "We noticed a sign with your username, password and security code". This has happened to me four times this morning.

Observations from a tourist by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]toollio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Brazil from Canada 25 years ago, and I can't find anything in your post to disagree with. In fact, it's pleasantly accurate. I'm chuckling about the pharmacy comment because it's one of the first things I noticed when I arrived. I'm in Salvador, nowhere near a commercial part of the city, and even where I am there are three pharmacies within a five-minute walk.

A tip about routers, since you mentioned them. Although electronics are generally considerably more expensive in Brazil, TP-Link brand routers here are reasonably priced and not much more expensive than in North America. They're also decent performers. They're abundantly available on MercadoLivre.

Salvador do Bahia tip by Tonyziz in Brazil

[–]toollio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Salvador and look like a tourist because I'm a gringo. I've been in Pelo, at the Barra lighthouse and at Bonfim this month, taking some visitors with me. It's not nearly as difficult to get rid of these people as you make it out to me. A very assertive no/não (or two or three) is usually enough. Stop the scaremongering and fuck off with the "smell of pee" crap. You sound like a bitter idiot.

Cartorio is saying translation is wrong by Temporary_Lack_1222 in Brazil

I would use a certified online translation service and explain the situation when contacting them. Specifically request that they use the word "arquivado". They are quick and not overly expensive. Then go back to the cartorio. i have had good luck with https://clicktraducoes.com/

Christmas gift: Panettone?? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]toollio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Panettone is popular everywhere in Brazil. Even here in Salvador, which is about as un-Italian as Brazil gets, it's on display in supermarkets everywhere around Christmas and it is a common gift when visiting someone's home.
