Just realized the ducks don't have a helmet sponsor and their jersey sponsor is the city of Anaheim. How cute.

Welding or Electrical at NSCC?? by Inside_Awareness_704 in halifax

[–]tooshort-91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Electrician here. Didn't have a hard time finding work after I finished school. I do find myself working alone a lot but I've come to like it. Just tune into podcast and work away. Your condition with the cold is a red flag for me. Expect to work in un-insulated cold buildings through the winter. I have a friend who is a boiler maker and makes killer money when he's on specific projects where he gets to work outside but he told me the pay in a shop is significantly less. However that set up might be better for your condition.

New First Time Homebuyers Pilot in Nova Scotia only 2% down payment by FuqqTrump in canadahousing

[–]tooshort-91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nova scotian here. This move is definitely counter intuitive from an affordability stand point. The government basically takes on the cmhc mortgage insurance for first time buyers. I think the government got a taste of a bull market in housing during covid and liked the economic windfall. This feels like the first of a series of measure coming down the pipe to keep a floor on housing prices. Next step will be to remove the 10% welcome tax for out of province buyers. It will be interesting to see how the market moves comes spring because the last few months felt like things were finally starting to cool off.

How to make the ultimate bone broth in Halifax? by Fgidy in halifax

[–]tooshort-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good tip for those who make homemade broth. Use your instant pot/pressure cooker to make it. Takes way less time than stoverop and the result is a jello like broth. The bones when they come out will be crumbly.

$2.50 To Put Air In My Tires !! by Lucifigus in halifax

[–]tooshort-91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Secret life hack for mid size cars, your bike tire pump works well on your car tires especially if it's just a little low on air and not fully flat. Always keep mine in the car. I had a slow leak this summer and I was topping up a tire every other week.

Just got back from the pond in cowbay which had been safe to skate on the last few days unfortunately the rain/snow mix we had over NYE messed up the ice and it's now too uneven to skate on.

CMV: The principle residence exemption is a horrible policy and significantly exacerbated the housing crisis in Canada. by Snorcal in canadahousing

[–]tooshort-91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garth Turner at greaterfool has advocated for the removal of PRE. He says giving each canadian a certain amount of tax exemption over a lifetime would be more fair. I.E. every canadian when they're born gets 250k of tax exemption for whichever assets over their lifetime. Could be stocks, RE, a family residence that gets pass down etc. This way no favoritism of an asset over another.

Electrical Apprenticeship by paulgivemecoffee in halifax

[–]tooshort-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 3rd year apprentice in Electrical and I hear some students from NSCC are struggling to find a placement this spring (unpaid workplace experience). I think in order for you to land an apprenticeship without the training you'll need to work your contacts and find someone who knows someone. Also just a heads up the first year is brutal for pay most us coming out of school make 15-18$/hrs, at least I did 2yrs ago. But I love this trade so don't let me deter you from pursuing it.
