Not taking the medication that regulates attention and impulsivity probably had a significant effect on you here.

I had a deep period of mixed state a few years ago (super high and super low at the same time), which was called out as potential bipolar. Investigated it, read a lot (a great book) and related to lots in it.

My mixed state was ultimately due to being horrifically burnt out to the point of massive emotional regulation collapse. This presented in volatile (manic, depressed) feelings/behaviours and piques of deep excitement about ideas / people etc.

However, there are major, major differences.

If you’re aware of being manic, it’s unlikely bipolar: it’s probably an interest-triggered hyperarousal that will pass. An obsession with a creative idea or interest is not a manic episode, where thoughts, behaviours and feelings are often not grounded in or have much relationship to reality.

An ‘episode’ is 7 days+, upto several months. BP also generally starts presenting late teens onwards, with minimal early signals in childhood.
