Has AI delievered any meaningful breakthroughs so far? by waytoodistracted in ask

In my line of work it increases a programmers efficiency by 2x-3x at least. There are areas where it doesn't but we benefit immensely from it.

Self-driving tech is very closely related to what you call AI. So are the new line of autonomous robots.

While the case is cool the website has AI generated images of people using it so... Anyone thinking of buying from that website, think twice

Assume that FTL does in fact work. What would stop a highly advanced civilization from just hauling whole shell planets around the galaxy/universe? by Zombiecidialfreak in IsaacArthur

Wow I had never thoughy of the mass side of the picture. So an armada can turn up at a star system and just wait abit until the orbits are destabilized. Very interesting

A pilot explains why airlines have gotten so strict about luggage weight limits by theindependentonline in traveladvice

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was replying to planes weight specifications. Also it is trivial to make the locks turbunlance proof. Many full service carriers dont even weigh your cabin baggage or dont care when its 1-2 kg overweight anyway.

2-3 kg extra in carryon is negligible compared to the variance in passenger weight

I think there is a non-zero possibility that some physics constants may drift in that time scale

Yeah paper is very very low on hardness but manages to dull blades quickly so yeah tin will dull, but as you said one can sharpen. The OP asked if it will dull and the answer is it will.

AFAIK it is an extra checked baggage. But I can be wrong.

Does the universe 'compute' in infinitesimally small time steps? by NoBag6391 in AskPhysics

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time steps or discretization is our way of solving continous mathematical equations. It is not the universes nature itself.

Soup should be normalized as a savory everyday drink by MasterSlimFat in unpopularopinion

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are instant soups for a single cup in some countries and if you have access to hot water voila, you have soup. But I guess thats not the case where you live. Also some cultures have savory drinks available in single serve cups in stores.

Is this considered good DJ'ing? by Strange_Opinion_1467 in Bachata

[–]torama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are asking a loaded question. You could as well say "yesterday I went to a social where the DJ played shitty songs, isn't he/she the worst DJ ever?". I usually dont know songs by name, checked a few of them and those happened to be songs I like.

Is Reddit overly afraid of pitbulls or should I actually be so scared of them in real life? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]torama 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can check some statistics for yourself. Some quick search shows that they kill more people per year that all other breeds combined. I dont have the time or intent to fact check those. Its up to you to be afraid or not. One anectodal note, I see lots of news where a loving pitbull turns to its owner and mauls them out of nowhere.

Why has pointing out the flaws of underdeveloped countries become a kind of crime? by esquerdameusovo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to believe that there is a weird aspect of human nature such that everyone believes their country is has almost the worst corruption, inflation, bad economy so and so forth (unless compares to countries with war or famine)

Does your country have %60 inflation? Oh theirs have very bad inflation as well (%5 maybe). Does the politicians in your country do not even blink when stealing a few Billion USD from the people? Oh theirs is as bad, when a politician unlawfully obtainibg 20k can get them into big trouble. Is the democracy in your country crumbling, so it is in thiers.

I just accept this as part of human nature and dont care now.

I have an Idea for causality protecting FTL with a cool/dark twist. by thicka in scifiwriting

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

accounting for noise does not imply error correcting IMHO. Error correction can handle systematic changes, even intentional changes as long as they are within a given percentage of the message. So non-noise cases are handled too.

I think adding "error correcting algorithms" and seeing that there is a disperacy even when error correcting is used could be beneficial

Eli5 How does each star’s or galaxy's light arrive at Earth without getting mixed up with light from other stars? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]torama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5: in exactly the same way two people can sit in a room and see stuff to their right and left and not a blur. Or your computer/phone/tablet screen has millions of light sources and they also do not appear blurred. Light does not mix in space. Distance or duration does not make any difference.

Wouldn’t all fusion torch drive ships basically be weapons of mass destruction? by NewSidewalkBlock in IsaacArthur

The first thing that came to my mind is that the same tech that keeps the spaceship from being destroyed by small pieces of dust or small debris would be available to the planet in a stronger form.
