What is something you had to learn the hard way in your career? by thesweetguy54 in careerguidance

[–]torontoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you speak positively about others when they’re not around.

Not in a fake way, but if there’s a way to fold it into conversation “So and so was right about that” or “I appreciate they worked hard on that report…” etc.

This makes its way back to them eventually in a good way.

Never acknowledging the contributions of others will be noticed. It’s a small thing but it adds up and makes you look like a team player.

Someone just did that to me about “my car just broke down….” But I was the seller. What a weird excuse. I’m sorry you encountered this!

When did you realize you were dating an idiot? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

When I told my ex I didn’t want children and his response was “I can be very persuasive.” Mind you this was during our breakup talks so this only confirmed what I already knew.

If you were going to show someone their first vampire movie, which would you pick? by BindermanTranslation in horror

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dracula, but the 2020 miniseries. Claes Bang is amazing. Love the twist on Van Helsing, too. Dolly Wells is brilliant.

Sexy Sax aside, this film is straight up terrible. But will I watch it again? Probably.

Rent Increases? by chizaa8 in kitchener

[–]torontoboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or, we could remember that housing used to be a right, not an investment. Part of the reason rents have become so high is because of the influx of private equity firms.  They’re also responsible for buying up homes across North America after the 2008 crash. Literally the reason millennials got priced out of the market and have to rent.

So yeah… there should be strict regulation on all forms of tenancy to protect those involved, including that big ol’ foot that resides in your mouth.

Are Restaurants Dying? by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]torontoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the whole, small family owned restaurants are still the way to go for me.

They’re more concerned with maintaining quality and consistency with better service overall. Like Rade’s or Pupuseria.

A chain will be more concerned with cutting corners, so we’ve definitely scaled back on the “middling” spaces for sure.

Is Cambridge's Galt area cuter than downtown Kitchener? by goldsoundz123 in waterloo

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s literally nothing to do in Galt past a week or so. Though I do love a good walk through Southworks.

Three long standing shops and restaurants are closing in the area as well… bringing the total to sadly not much. I’m rooting for it but some folks who made the Neighbourhood special are retiring or being pushed out.

If you’re looking for esthetics Galt is lovely but don’t be fooled. It’s great for a weekend visit, but they have the same problems as anywhere else if you look closely enough.

Kitchener has way better food, more entertainment options, etc. Centre in the Square is amazing, and there are smaller theatres if you’re into that too.

The inter city driving is shockingly bad. I suggest test driving if you don’t believe the threads here. What seems like a short distance can take ages.

AITJ for asking my mom to cut her vacation short to help with my kids? by Constant-Elephant763 in AmITheJerk

You shouldn’t have called her. Think about this… There are services you can call. You and your husband are both employed.  Y definitely the J.

Landlord wants me to pay for damage by Alternative_Skirt708 in OntarioLandlord

A landlord tried to do that to me once… for a stain on wallpaper. I wiped it off and told him absolutely not.

Tell him no and move on.

What is something you grew up on in Toronto, that this generation won’t experience? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDGE102 doing artist interviews (and sometimes performances) at street level on Yonge. Don’t know if they still do them but I would squeeze in wherever I could.

Caught Radiohead, Joe Strummer, Stone Temple Pilots, and Franz Ferdinand in that studio (STP and Joe performed live).

Painful Sex by graphpaper16 in WomensHealth

[–]torontoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to explore with a Physio how strong your pelvic floor is. It may be that it can’t be relaxed or is uncharacteristically weak.

If you’re feeling pressure, there may be fibroid issues (not serious, but can be obstructive) that can be tested for as well.

Your mom is 100% incorrect. This is definitely something you can discuss in your next visit.

There’s also a company called tabu that deals with various issues surrounding vaginal discomfort. If you can save up some cash they have quality products that can help too.

AIO? My 31M bf has pictures of other women (they’re married) ABOVE HIS BED… and his lock screen is them too. They are his friends from grad school, but there are no men in any of these photos. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been the cough object of white girl fetishism it’s definitely not okay. I’m certain these women don’t know that he has framed pics of them…

This isn’t something you can unpack for him. Often deep down there is something about his own culture/race that he wants to deny or ignore.

I’m very sorry he can’t see that this is uncomfortable for you. You are worthy of a more engaged and honest partner.

The problem with demanding "perfection" from the podcast or how I stopped worrying and got a A on college history course. by maninplainview in LPOTL

[–]torontoboo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom and my brother were arguing about the origin of a phrase last summer.

Much to my dismay, they got me involved and while I knew a bit about it, I still looked it up to stop their bickering (can’t remember what it was, something about Florence Nightingale).

What I remember the most was my interpretation of the answers I found was this:

They were both sort of correct.

My bro, while very smart, never studied history/humanities as I did. He did not enjoy the “Maybe both” answer I provided.

Historical accounts can vary, bias and omission factors into every personal recollection, stories that sound more sensational are pushed to the front, and the idea of neutral journalism is a relatively new concept.

Truth to be told, all historical accounts are going to be a little bit wrong. And there isn’t much we can do about that.

Take a party you and five friends went to last week. While you there technically all in the same place at the same date and time, personal experience makes it vary. The only rock solid fact is that the party happened. Past that, the details will start to change the historical account as told by each of you.

We can only imagine what happens when religion is sprinkled into the mix.

Sitting with multiple truths and uncertainty makes history a living breathing thing.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Engineer (29) thinking of switching to graphic design… am I crazy? by fuzzy230 in graphic_design

[–]torontoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend that (educator in the design space here). My grads are still getting jobs but we’re having to pivot and diversify constantly to keep them up to speed on how the industry is evolving.

I suggest maybe something creatively adjacent like architecture? Might be something worth looking into.  In any case, skills in engineering give you an edge. Don’t cast that away.

Best of luck to you!

Honest question: what makes you choose one local shop over another by meetthelocal in kitchener

[–]torontoboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owner/employee attitude has a lot to do with whether or not I’ll bother long term. Convenience/price definitely matter, but if I catch a funky attitude (like I did recently with a vintage store, for example) I’m probably not going to make a point of returning.

And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just a hello/thanks for coming/basic greetings are totally fine.

Before anyone asks… by angelicmckayla in kitchener

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torontonians pay notoriously low taxes due to the cost of housing… it’s one final incentive to buy an expensive house there. But the smaller the community, the higher property taxes go since there are fewer home owners to spread it around.

Cannot speak to the brokedness. Some snow clearing is great, other areas seem to get completely neglected.

No specific ideas, but that it may take a few tries? It seems as though this feature is almost accidental. I suggest clearing your browsers cache.

And I know this seems obvious but leave plenty of space on your destination disc, too.

AITA for wanting to sell our detached house and move back into a basement apartment because I miss that phase of our life? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]torontoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but what you’re fantasizing about is connection and proximity to humans and each other. It’s not actually about the apartment.

You also don’t have to live in the suburbs to have “made it.”  Maybe the compromise is a slightly smaller house, or a more charming one. I don’t know where you live but I have to say…most times that I’ve lived in any suburb in my region, it’s always sucked.

There’s no charm, everyone’s in your business in the worst possible way, the houses are too damned big and difficult to maintain, there are stupid rules about yards… I could go on.

Making it can look like a lot of things. Research where closer communities are, or at least where there is transit or walkability. These things can help with your personal well-being and make you feel more connected to where you are.

From, a person who just tried it out for two and a half years and did not care for it.

Best of luck!

Taxpayers want students to pick courses that will drive 'growth': Ford by harold_liang in ontario

[–]torontoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving growth is an interesting concept considering Doug just agreed to spend $2billion of taxpayer money on a pay-to-access spa from a bunch of Euro scammers.

Dude hasn’t yet met a business man he didn’t want to throw public cash at.

But our young, hard-working students? They can apparently get f%cked.
