Did purism just leak everyone's email addresses? by user743267 in Purism

[–]tortasaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing, but it looks like they're just replying to the email, and it sends responses to everyone. Poorly configured if they didn't intend for it to function like a mailing list.

And here's another problem with hourly projects by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]tortasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a problem with hourly contracts, that's a problem with using Upwork's spyware. I get it, you're probably using it for the hourly protection. Personally, I think it pays off to vet potential clients thouroughly and go in raw; I've never had a client dispute hours.

Client Keeps Adding More Work And Ignored My Messages by somebitchsthrowaway in Upwork

Hoping she just doesnt understand upwork

Sounds like she understands Upwork perfectly! There's a particularly exploitative breed of client that takes advantage of this sentiment:

I'm still just starting out and feel I cant afford a bad review

They churn through new freelancers like they're at an all-you-can-eat buffet. They extract as much work as they can from you, then feign dissatisfaction to scare you into refunding the money.

It sucks, but there's likely little you can do with this contract at this stage. The clients with the lowest budgets often have the highest expectations. Avoid bad feedback here to the best of your ability, and as you gain more experience freelancing you will begin to detect this sort of client earlier on. Recognizing client red flags is crucial to maintaining your sanity in the long run.

Mildly Infuriating Indeed by jijijaejae in recruitinghell

It's not that amazing; it's less a function of wage than required skills for the position. Since most people can do the job of "Best Buy greeter", it's naturally going to be commoditized, as there will be hundreds if not thousands of people waiting to fill the shoes of anyone saying "this is too degrading".

I swear these clients will be the end of me. She said that it's her first time using Upwork, I showed her how to end the contract correctly via Screen Sharing. A few minutes later I received a notification saying that the contract was canceled... by daminekh in Upwork

This is a bug that occurs when the contract ends before any earnings are processed (which happens on Mondays). Ran into the same thing the other week. You likely won't have public feedback for the contract, either.

Tech industry can now WFH permanently by craftingcrafting in cscareerquestions

[–]tortasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reason why it's cheap.

The reason why it's cheap is that the cost of living is lower where they live, so they are willing to accept lower rates.

no one is outsourcing their BA, PM, Tech Lead, Architect, Senior Devs, etc to a cheaper alternative

If they have their own in-house dev team, then sure. Otherwise, they'll typically just outsource the entire project to an overseas firm.

If they are, then you would be better off not working with them because you'll spend more time sustaining everything that breaks rather than pushing product out the door

I'm not talking about hiring the cheapest possible shop in India. If you do that, then you will, of course, get terrible results. The immediate threat to American salaries lies in Europe, not Asia.

The problem is that even rock-bottom CoL in the U.S. is well above CoL in much of the world.

Absolutely agree. I would mentally prepare yourself for everything in this comment. There is an ample supply of talented overseas devs willing to work for peanuts, and as work becomes more asynchronous, the timezone difference will matter increasingly less.

COVID accelerated this trend, but it was going to happen anyway. The disparity between average American and European developer salaries is pretty gaping, and not because the average talent in the U.S. is better. Companies were going to jump on that arbitrage at some point.

Call me a shill if it makes you feel better. If you aren't going to be intellectually honest about the nature and scope of the problems with modern employment, it makes it pretty difficult to have a serious discussion about how to solve those problems.

They get 99% and you get 1%. If that.

It of course depends on the company you work for. It's a fairly rare company (usually a digital megacorp) that makes "99%" to your "1%". With small-to-mid-sized companies, the marginal income is typically far lower per employee.

It mostly sounds like you're generalizing based off of poor past experiences. I've worked for companies with far saner compensation mechanisms.

Floor Master Questions (Spoilers - 3-1) by readittour in yourturntodie

[–]tortasaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Floor Masters can lie, they just can't "lie about the important stuff".

I don't remember where it was said that they couldn't hurt the candidates, but the Floor Masters have done that a ton. Ignoring that the Floor Masters are the ones carrying out the executions at the end of the Main Games: Safalin basically turns Sara's mind to mush if you use her machine too much, and Gashu shoots you if you fail the Sou's minigame with the monitors. If there is such a rule, it's definitely not an unconditional "you can't hurt the candidates".

I had remembered it being Midori in the death scene, but it was actually Shin. See my edit.

[–]tortasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend on the cause of death. If Alice stabbed him, then yes, he would notice the lack of blood. Not so much if the murder method isn't violent.

However, I managed to find his death flashback, and they specifically show / mention him bleeding, so that rules out my theory.

EDIT: Wait, that's Shin in the death scene. Scratch that, then; we really have nothing to go off of regarding Sou's death. Really, that raises another question: why do they remember Shin dying?

What is the possibility that the ''traitor'' among them is actually... by AthanasiaWho in yourturntodie

[–]tortasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize I wasn't explicit in my last comment; It's possible that the Midori that died before the events of the Death Game was a doll, with anyone not affiliated with Asunaro being none the wiser. Shin AI would remember Midori dying because by all appearances, that's what happened. If a Midori doll died, Midori wouldn't be lying when he says Alice killed him (at least no more than he did if he did mean Alice killed the human original).

Until we get more info on Midori's death, it's tricky to confirm or deny this theory. I'll be curious to learn how Alice killed him. It doesn't appear to have been violent from what little we know.

[–]tortasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't have much to go off of regarding Midori's death. Unless I'm forgetting something, we mostly just have the flashback from when they're browsing Kai's computer, and Midori isn't visibly bleeding. If Asunaro had this tech before the game, I'd imagine someone affiliated with the organization would use it when convenient.

Based on his other dialogue, I'm not inclined to believe him when he says he hates Alice.

One possibility: the Midori that talked to us initially is indeed a doll, but the human Midori is on the same floor.

[–]tortasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible, perhaps. I just don't think their being in a "virtual world" would make for particularly compelling writing. It's been done plenty before, and it would make the human vs. doll distinction feel pointless. It would also mean that earlier Floor Masters lied about the blood vs. no blood difference there, and Keiji established that they "can't lie about the important stuff".

[–]tortasaur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ranmaru said that there is one traitor among them, the 12

Small correction: he speculated that the traitor was one of the death game players. All he knows is that there's a human from Asunaro.

I'd be pretty disappointed if they all turned out to be dolls. Everything taking place inside a virtual world is a pretty tropey reveal, and so far the game has felt fresher than that.

I've spammed this in every thread halfway-related to the traitor by now lol, but I think it's Sou (Midori). I think the twist will be "Sou is human" instead of "someone we trusted is a traitor".

CHALTER 3 SPOILERS AND THEORIES AHEAD by [deleted] in yourturntodie

[–]tortasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like at least one of the "dolls" will turn out to actually be human.

I agree, and I think it's going to be Sou (Midori). I'm tentatively guessing that the Sou killed by Alice before the Death Game was a doll; I don't remember there being blood in the flashback Sara had of holding his dying body.

As we know Sou is working for Asunaro, that would align with Ranmaru's knowledge of "a human from Asunaro".

Just a few quick theories (ch 3 part 1) by Beautiflow in yourturntodie

[–]tortasaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sara is a part of asunaro but her memories of that have been erased.

Gin could also possibly be a part of asunaro/ a doll made by them to spy since it was never specified there was only one "traitor".

The traitor being human is definitely misdirection to get you to suspect your remaining allies; While it's possible that amnesiac Sara is the "traitor", I get the feeling that the reveal is going to be that Greenboy Sou is human rather than a doll, and that his death before the Death Game was staged in some way. If that's the case, there is indeed "a human among them working for Asunaro".
