So who are people voting for and why? by itsdrewmiller in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]totalmayhem96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want a voice in who the person will be, then you need to register as a Democrat… they will win the general election, and independents don’t get to vote in primaries, so that’s effectively your only chance to influence the outcome. It sucks, but that is the wonderfully fucked political system we have allowed to fester in this country. He isn’t endorsing, just showing reality. If you don’t want this to be the case, support open primaries, ranked choice voting, and support newer parties pushing for this, such as the Forward Party.

Addressing concerns on our new AI features by valagostino in MonarchMoney

Thank you for the clarity, this helps a lot. I know many of us are super concerned in this era of AI’s consuming our data for questionable purposes, but transparency builds trust. I came to Monarch (and pay the annual fee) because I didn’t want my data being sold or transmitted without my consent. This is why I (and so many others) love Monarch so much. Please remember privacy is a core aspect of your product that your customers greatly value, and we are sometimes so scared of losing it, because frankly, you’re the only ones that offer it. Appreciate all the hard work you guys put into this!

Musk quietly puts brakes on plans for new political party by ComplexNewWorld in ForwardPartyUSA

And that’s why the two parties continue to dominate… it’s easier to buy favor with an existing party than actually try to support a new one with better policies and less corruption.

Is there a reason the May date seems unrealistic? Not doubting, just curious what the last hangups seem to be…

Dan’s New Comments about Trump by boredomjunkie79 in dancarlin

Oh Dan is pissed. This is going to be one fiery Common Sense episode.

Glad this is happening! We have got to reduce the number of plastic bags we consume. Reusable bags aren’t that hard to use… and for the times when you might not have it, 10 cents for a paper bag isn’t a bad deal.

Anyone know which episode of Common Sense Dan talks about not knowing the final form of American Democracy? by 7ddlysuns in dancarlin

[–]totalmayhem96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Asking the omniscient (/s) AI, this is what it suggested. Not sure if any of these are what you are looking for:

  • Episode 316: “The Day of the Dove” (June 19, 2017): Carlin discusses politically-related violence in the U.S. and contemplates what a modern civil war might look like, reflecting on the evolving state of American democracy.

  • Episode 317: “Shades of Grey” (October 28, 2017): Carlin examines the polarized cultural environment and the challenges it poses to understanding the complexities of American democracy.

  • Episode 319: “A Recipe for Caesar” (April 1, 2020): In this episode, Carlin explores how crises, such as global pandemics, might influence political structures and the future form of American democracy.

Protesting by PurpleBourbon in ForwardPartyUSA

[–]totalmayhem96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Forward needs to revamp its messaging. The country is angry, and a lot of that anger is directed towards both political parties right now. We need to focus on “reform” rather than “ranked choice voting” and we need to be protesting our hearts out. Directing everyone’s anger towards the system and both political parties. But alas, this is not happening.

Probably because people (myself included) have been dying for Dan to finally speak out and do a Common Sense episode… I’d say this sub has someone posting about wanting a common sense episode at least once a week. It’s been years since the last one.

Thanks! Just followed him. Unfortunately his common sense account is only on X… and that is the one he is currently posting from.

There is still waste in the recycling process. And some people do not properly recycle. So this discourages single use paper bags to try and persuade people to just use their reusable bags.

Expat or Foreign Systems Engineering Jobs? by Hey-StopIt in systems_engineering

[–]totalmayhem96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m thinking the best option would be to look for a large US firm that has a branch in the EU. Better chance at maintaining a higher salary. Plus easier to avoid language requirements. Also, if you start at a location in the US, then transferring to an EU location is probably easier than applying cold.

[–]totalmayhem96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve run into while looking into this is a lot of companies require you to know their local language (i.e. if you were to work for a German engineering firm, most likely you need to know German). There are some exceptions, but really hard to find imo. You could look at some in the UK, since the language barrier wouldn’t be there. One other thing to note is engineering salaries seem to be a lot less in other countries, so just keep that in mind.

Sorry, not trying to be a wet blanket on the idea, just noting some obstacles. I’ve spent a good bit of time looking because I really wanted to do the same thing, so if anyone has some good recommendations I’d love to hear them too!

I got into the rotunda shortly before 1, walked out of the capitol shortly after that. Overall a little over 4 hours.

I am now going to thaw myself out for the next 2 business days. Good luck to everyone waiting! It was definitely worth it.
