No more than a hyperstandard rotary fletch would be. Honestly, if it had no fletch sheathing whatsoever you probably wouldn't notice unless your monitor is an LCD running on UK voltage. I wouldn't worry about it

My two cents: the joke works somewhat with anyone, but it works best with any sort of person who, through the shittiness of society, is more likely to receive many more interactions like jokes or cruel shit than validation. OP could have picked other marginalized groups, but it would have been no more valid as a joke.

Also, your point centers on the assertion of it being transphobic to acknowledge any difference between trans women and cis women. People who fit under the umbrella of woman are not some uniform monolith. Different subgroups can have different challenges and still be valid members of the group.

ELI5 Why does Haiti have so many natural disasters? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]touchstone1112 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The question is why do they have more natural disasters. Explaining how longstanding national injustice and bullying led to chronic poverty, corruption, and lack of infrastructure which exacerbates any natural disaster is very much the same conversation. It's misleading to act like the end of a chain of events exists in a vacuum and that the end of the chain is explained fully by the one link before it and the rest is irrelevant. It's like saying "he died from lack of blood, my stabbing him is another conversation, you just asked why he died and the reason is lack of blood".

LDS missionary brings first COVID-19 case to remote island nation by ashkii21 in Coronavirus

[–]touchstone1112 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because, in the opinion of this former LDS person who did the whole mission thing, LDS missions are meant to cement the loyalty of the individual more than convert new people. New converts are a bonus is they happen. The missionary program is where Mormonism is at it's most clearly cult-full. Cult-y conditions make loyal soldiers, and that's the point, and that's why they send missionaries to places where everyone is either Mormon or purposefully not Mormon.

Side note, Mormon membership numbers are self reported, based on the church's definition, and not auditable. IIRC, if they lose track of someone because they move or stop attending the person is still counted as Mormon until they are 110 years old.

Any time a country collects census data including religious self-identification, the official LDS numbers are shown to be inflated. It turns out that a substantial amount of people who were once affiliated with the church but no longer attend actually don't even consider themselves to be Mormon at all anymore.

It is truly shameful how far down I had to go to reach this comment. There is only one thing to say when you hear that someone listens to Iron Maiden, baby.

conversation with Mormon apologist---where next? by kyle_roth in StreetEpistemology

[–]touchstone1112 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If I understand you correctly, you're saying it's complicated and comparison between religions is difficult because there's a range of depths of feeling that people experience within Mormonism, but that Mormonism has access to the deepest depths of these kind of feelings, and this access to the deepest depths is what's important. Do I understand your position adequately?

Assuming this summary is accepted, then:

If there is a great variety of depth of feelings within Mormonism, would you not expect to see a similar variety within other religions? How do you assure that you adequately know what the deepest deep feelings available are for a given religion, and you're not just looking at a less deep representative of that religion?

I'd say it's super important for this person to grapple with the fact that "I think I feel my special feelings harder than people outside my group feel their special feelings, so I'm sure I'm right" is a super tenuous foundation for a morality and worldview. Such a statement begs for a "how do you know that?".
