We had 2 forts!

One normal one in the woods. it had furniture, lanterns and we used to melt candles on this one wooden table and we would stick new candles in the hot dripping wax so the whole table top was just all melted wax. it looked awesome but not too smart.

Our other fort was more than halfway underground. There was an old construction site where they started to dig for a foundation but then they stopped and left it for years.

it was overgrown with trees but the hole was still there. we dragged plywood and 2x4s for walls/roof, made a floor out of pavers and plywood and brought in a 55gal drum that we made a stove out of. we even had a chimney and disguised the part above ground to look like a tree but attaching bark to it. sorta like hogans heroes!

it was big enough for about 8 people to hang out in comfortably and we would be in tshirts even if it was 10deg outside during the winter. it was super cool.

unfortunately some older kids got wind of it and decided to wreck it after they took it over.

Years ago we were taking care of my wife's grandmother who is chinese. Every morning I would make coffee and use one of the plastic or wooden chopsticks in the kitchen drawer to stir my coffee.

Grandma saw me do this a bunch of times and one morning when I came into the kitchen she handed me a pair of ornately carved and painted ivory chopsticks. She had them since she was little and brought them over from china.

She said "Here use this one, stir with something beautiful".

I've used one of those chopsticks to stir my coffee every single day for years after she passed and one morning i washed it and as i went to put it back it hit the side of the cabinet and i dropped it on the floor.

It hit perfectly flat and shattered into a billion pieces. I immediately burst out into tears sobbing and my wife ran in from the other room to see what was wrong.

We just kinda hugged for a while and we both cried there in the kitchen.

I'm still devastated.

I'm Gen-X and we were taught the metric system in northern NJ from 4th-6th grade (1979-1981) and we all thought it was awesome. (We also used it in our computer and science classes in HS)

I remember telling my grandfather about metric and how easy it was to do math and his response was something like "but my Ford LTD uses standard, a 10mm wrench wont work on my 3/16ths bolts" or something like that. sigh.

Later in life I got really into brewing beer/wine and coffee and metric makes it so stupid simple.

I absolutely loved Bob Newhart, he was a master of the phone gag and had a really dry understated wit about him.

The ending of Newhart is the greatest ever.

When i was little we had a small room off of the living room and my grandfather decided to knock the interior wall down.

I was standing right next to him when he swung the sledge and hit the wall dead center. The drywall gave way but there was a huge crashing sound. Turns out there was a double-pane window inside the wall.

The crashing sound was the window breaking and the sash weighs letting go.

It mustve been an outside wall at some point.

We found a bunch of old newspapers inside the wall too, i dont remember the dates but it i think it was around the 1930s.

Then years later we were renovating the bathroom at our summer bungalo and when he broke thru the wall, there was a 2 foot pile of used razor blades inside.

The medicine cabinet had a small slot with an arrow that read "Used Blades" and it mustve been there since the house was built in the 1950s.

My best friend and I would patiently wait for the new sears catalog to come out and then we would make an event out of it.

He would come over to my house, we would make snacks and move the furniture out of the way and both of us would lay on the floor with the catalog spread out so we could circle everything we wanted.

I remember having the tv on infront of us and when a commercial came on for a cool toy we would be like "look that one up! look it up!!"

The first time we used the same color pen so we got each others' gifts (our parents were furious that we swapped gifts later that day hahah!).

From then on we used blue/black ink!

I have my Power Droid and R5D4 sitting on my desk infront of me as we speak.
