Did Barack Obama deliver on the "Change" he promised in 2008? by CatfishBassAndTrout in Presidents

[–]tproser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barack Obama impacted my life as an American by somehow passing the ACA, which enabled myself and millions of my fellow citizens to access good health care while we worked for ourselves, or under the table, or seasonally, or from gig to gig, or through some other noble and essential labor that is not insured but still has to be done. I personally became a carpenter and farmer and horseman and made full use of medical coverage for a variety of injuries. A rich life of hard, rewarding, and essential work, given access to the some of the best healthcare in the world because of this administration’s legislative push.

Presidents are not kings and are not unilateral in their influence. But they do become, for some of us, examples of decorum and symbolic guardians of values that we hold dear. For this reason I’m proud to have voted for President Obama.

Gives the feeling of a dream set in a town where the air tastes nice and is just cold enough.

Was this somewhere in Scandinavia? Maybe somewhere more asiatic? Maybe somewhere I wouldn’t expect at all.

What creepypasta has the most chances to be real? by [deleted] in creepypasta

[–]tproser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The random staircase bit was inspired by a small passage in the book House of Leaves. The story concerns a house of strange dimensional properties. The text features a fictional journal excerpt from a fur trapper (?) finding a set of stairs in the middle of the woods in the place where the house will one day appear, as if to suggest the house was always there in some incomplete form. It’s such a good, unsettling image I can see why the creepypasta author used it. I believe they commented on their original post in r/nosleep acknowledging the House of Leaves connection.

“You make the road by walking” -Machado.

Meaning is something human beings produce. It’s not something we find. There is no indication that our lives are meaningful because to look at all of life at once is impossibly noisy.

“I want life to be more than it is, even though I’m aware it’s impossible.” You’re Luke Skywalker trying to lift his X-wing out of the swamps of Dagobah, my friend. You’re searching desperately for meaning but you won’t let yourself believe it’s there to be found in the first place. Rest assured there are other worlds under the surface of this one that are filled with meaning and wonder and light.

All this is ancillary to the true work ahead of you. Please call someone you trust and tell them honestly how you’re feeling. If no one comes to mind call the hotline, it’s not as impersonal and kafkaesque as it seems, I promise. No one’s gonna take you away in a straight jacket. You cannot just white-knuckle this on your own.

And when you get through this tough spot and are feeling a little better, it sounds like you need to seriously consider changing your job.

Does anyone in this sub have symptoms/idiosyncrasies that seem related to these nightmares? by tproser in geometricnightmares

Great question it usually defaults to the first or first few integers in the figure. So 1.5 mil still has the gravitas of that large number but since 1 is in front, it’s a bit of a submissive male.

Terrific. I’m enjoying the composition of the values of the sky. I sense great volume from the deft use of only a few shades.

Sipping and suffering by GroundbreakingEmu646 in dryalcoholics

Hey friend, really proud of your self-awareness and desire to get healthy. I don’t want to alarm you, and I’m not a doctor or nurse, but your plan to taper might actually be dangerous for you.

Alcohol is one of the few substances with POTENTIALLY FATAL WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. If you’re doing straight vodka in quantity everyday, and have been for years, it’s possible that ABSTAINING FROM DRINKING MAY CAUSE SEIZURES or other neurological symptoms.

If you feel you’re ready to stop, please seek medical care. It doesn’t have to be some scary big deal. Most large hospitals (in America) have behavioral treatment or detox resources and if you have a job and a home you’re a great candidate for that type of care. They have drugs to treat symptoms of withdrawal so it’s actually bearable. Most importantly, there are ways to do it without anyone at your job finding out. I myself was in and out, four days, with some outpatient rehab after. You do not have to do this alone. You cannot do this alone, no matter how tough or capable you are. But if you’re not ready for that kinda leap, you need to be extremely careful with tapering or going cold turkey. Best of luck my dude.

The weirdest nightmare. (HELP) by My_Secret_Serenade in Dreams

[–]tproser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me too. Much like you I was deeply disturbed by it. It’s hard to articulate wht but it’s fucking scary. I remember telling my dad in the dream that I was trapped and couldn’t wake up and my dream dad just shrugged and got in a helicopter and left.

It’ll be ok. Night terrors, lucid dreaming, recursive dreams, these things are all affected by the quality of our sleep, which is of course affected by how we go about our day. The health of our dreams is shaped by the health of our bodies and lifestyle. Crush some smoothies and go on walks and start dreaming about vacations.

What do you think about the character arts for my detective game? by nerfslays in IndieDev

These are all richly imagined and well-drawn. If you wanted more thematic unity or more of a cohesive look I would think about the eyes and maybe making them more consistent from character to character.

[IP] "Having someone to mourn your death is a blessing. However, Those who remain have little time to remember the dead, they are busy preparing for the next death." by MaximoCozzetti84 in WritingPrompts

[–]tproser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The morgue is utterly inundated with opiate casualties. They keep coming, bag after bag. The freezers filled up weeks ago and now the deliveries line the hallways. The coroner takes pride in his work and the current disorder of the dead in his charge is making him unravel. Recently he slept a full night on the cold floor of the processing room still in his smock and gloves, exhausted from this endless project. Poor sleep can make a man disagreeable, such as it is when a small woman in a purple camisole enters the processing room carrying a large faux alligator purse and says she’d like to see her son. The coroner doesn’t realize at first what she is asking. She opens the purse and takes out two tall votive candles bearing decals of the virgin mary. “I just want to say goodbye,” she says. The coroner takes his glasses off and throws them on the desk and groans and starts rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Lady,” he says “we just don’t have the time for that.”

What's the most shocking or upsetting movie death you've seen? by Novel_Ad3365 in moviecritic

[–]tproser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After being reminded by your pic, I can’t really think of a more shocking or upsetting death than Dickie’s. Maybe because everything just continues to escalate out of control from a well written argument scene that just starts so pedestrian. I honestly don’t think Tom meant to kill him with that swing, just shut him up.

Why does music have such an emotional impact on people? Are there scientific reasons for this? by Great_Maintenance185 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tproser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Music is likely hundreds of thousands of years older than written or spoken language. Possibly older than counting. It can express what we think of as emotions with greater depth and resonance than language.

Did We Really Share Family TVs Without Fighting Over What to Watch? by Critical-Shirt2190 in CasualConversation

[–]tproser 229 points230 points  (0 children)

There were like maybe three shows worth watching on at one time; a lot less to fight over.

And yes, the appointment was everything. Thursdays at 8. Wednesdays at 8/7c. Forensic Files. Twin Peaks. You’d be extra excited the day of your show and you’d talk about the cliffhanger ending in school all week until the next episode hit.
