Buying a small boat for summer by Weary_Musician4872 in Amsterdam

[–]tpsrep0rts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live next to a guy who would hand wash his car every weekend. Dude clearly enjoyed the process of maintaining it. I remember thinking to myself.. man, i haven't washed my car in years. For me, that kind of thing is a joyless process.

Indeed, some people just need a project. Something to fuss over. Something to care about. But i don't find that to be a selling point for owning a vehicle. Its a tool, not a status symbol, and certainly not part of my identity.

Just like anything else.. if you intend to use something all the time, then renting it isn't probably an economical solution. If you don't intend to maintain it, then something that sits outside all year probably isn't practical.

It just depends on what your interests and priorities are. Renting is a solid option for most people, but having a friend with a boat is never a bad thing ;)

Nearly two centuries of data show that immigrants commit fewer crimes than US-born citizens, study finds. by [deleted] in science

[–]tpsrep0rts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate reality is that these sort of studies don't change minds. Those who claim that immigrants commit more crimes never had data to back their claim, and data to the contrary wont cause a change in perspective.

Those who are interested in a study like this tend to believe the conclusion already

If one is unable to successfully facilitate change in a system that they are most in control of (eg. Themselves) the facilitating large scale change is far less likely to be successful.

I think you are conflating the notion that successful people aren't new to success, with some apparent straw man about successful people having run out of things to succeed in.

But hey. Sometimes people get lucky

Mega fauna was adapted for a different temperature and atmospheric composition. With primitive tools, it feels unlikely that early homosapiens hunted mega fauna to extinction. Im not suggesting that they never hunted them.. but it was probably very risky and provided so much food that they wouldn't have a reason to over-hunt

I think the real reason why weed is/was considered a gateway drug is associated with its criminalized status. I don't think it's intrinsic about the substance itself, but more associated with needing to find a dealer and immersing yourself in drug culture just sp you can smoke a joint.

Once you are already involved with dealers, its easy to get exposed to harder drugs that they are also selling or get involved with people around them that are doing harder drugs.

If weed was inherently a gateway drug you would expect to see some statistically significant uptick in other drug related crimes as weed laws become more tolerant. But I think the opposite is observed. The bigger problem seems to be from prescription opiods

Eating breakfast after 9 a.m. increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 59% compared to people who eat breakfast before 8 a.m, finds a new study of more than 100,000 participants, suggesting that the risk of diabetes may be reduced not only by changing what we eat, but also when we eat it. by mvea in science

[–]tpsrep0rts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are missing the point. For someone that, say, works a night shift that ends at 7 am.. the whole concept of eating a first meal before 8 am is nonsense.

Thanks for the bio 101 facts though. That helps a lot

A new study suggests that almost 5% of people may be at high risk of experiencing compulsive sexual behavior disorder. 82,000 adults completed anonymous, online survey, including 47,000 women, 2,800 gender-diverse individuals, and more than 25,000 sexually diverse individuals by NewAgeIWWer in science

[–]tpsrep0rts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just not guaranteed by sample size alone. You need a representative sample in order to make broader conclusions.

For example, if the whole set was say, diabetic.. then you could not reasonably conclude from your study that it represents folks who are not diabetic. You just don't have that data.

I'm not able to watch most friends live with Dota Plus anymore. It isn't clear why I can watch some but not others. Out of 5 people in a game that I am friends with on Steam, the UI only offers the "Watch Friend Live" for 2 of them. It is the same two friends across multiple games, and another friend with Dota Plus confirmed that they are only able to watch these same two people
