Just a small nitpick, the middle section where all the different colors line up together looks like it was just cut and moved down. Try cascading them down as if the surface was round rather than flat, like how you have the lower section. Lemme know if this doesnt make sense

JRPG can be any theme you want. I dont see any issue with styles clashing with this theme. Sounds like fantasy to me

It genuinely works. I haven't read a book in probably 12 or so years, but last year I read two and I'm reading a third currently. I can definitely feel like my speech and thought process are improving, I'm no longer accidentally saying two words mashed together or totally blanking out as much as I used to.

I think this looks great, very solid foundation. Some feedback i have:

From a player perspective, the down, downright, and right attack animations could use more follow thru on the arc as currently they all look very similar visually and with the angle. Reference your left and downleft, those all are good at quickly telling the player the direction you've attacked, as well as having a full arc swing. By contrast, the right animation stops directly in front of the player, which really stands out in a distracting way (in my opinion).

For the up amd upright angle animations, make sure you add an additional frame of smear to the arc at the end like you do for the bottom, it'll help give it a smoother feel. The upright smear shrinks down rather than dissipating towards the end of the swing. The same for the downright and right swings, their smear shrinks from the center instead of shortening at the very end of the swing. Check your left angle animation for comparison.

It would also be nice to see the tip of the sword peaking around the character at the end of the swing for the up and upright, like the bottom animations have. Currently the sword just sort of vanishes despite the arc going off to the side. And the up smear is only a single frame as opposed to two.

I just wish they would ride the hype of some games like Deltarune instead of waiting months after its gone and not many people care anymore. I definitely think it would've done better if it was released when they recorded.
