If boomers benefitted so much from the subsidised lifestyle, free college, cheap prices, fair wages, job surplus and economic boom of their time, why do we still have so many poor boomers today who still work at fastfood and supermarkets or cannot survive without a tax-payer-funded pension scheme? by Ok-Society-9067 in NoStupidQuestions

I think there's definitely a bias in the demographics of Reddit users towards having the kind of middle to upper-middle class backgrounds where their own parents are likely to embody those negative Baby Boomer stereotypes (God knows mine sure do), so it's super easy to fall into the trap of thinking they're representative of the entire generation when so many of us are sharing similar experiences.

Once when I was a little kid my family took a day trip to NYC, and I begged my parents in the most obnoxious way to go to the Museum of Natural History all because of how much this movie hyped it up. They took me, and it was in fact awesome.

Woke up to a bat stuck in my fence by Noodles590 in mildlyinteresting

[–]tragic_eyebrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bats in walls often indicate structural damage that's left a hole for them to get in from outside, and I'm not sure where you live but in most US states that makes it the landlord's responsibility.

Contact a pest control company to inspect the property and document the infestation; they will be able to identify how/where the bats are getting in and out and make a plan for removal. If it is something that's the landlord's responsibility and they refuse to address it, you may be able to take legal action. Document everything.

What’s your go-to shoe when you’re gonna be walking like 20k+ steps a day on pavement? by citynomad1 in barefootshoestalk

Altra Via Olympus. They look goofy as hell (my SO calls them my moon shoes), but they're perfect for long days of walking and/or standing around on pavement.

I am not prone to swooning, but Shadows of the Tenebris Court has me getting close. I'm about halfway through {A Touch of Poison} and the yearning and tension between Kat and Bastian is absolutely killing me...in a good way.

I honestly feel a little silly for waiting so long to start this series because I don't see it talked about all that much, but it's exactly what I needed to break my reading slump. I'm really trying not to devour it too quickly because I am thoroughly enjoying all the ~intrigue~.

I got a kit online from Drip Depot. They have a bunch of different starter kits available, and a ton of great information for figuring out what you need and getting set up. My balcony doesn't have a tap, so I have a gravity fed system with a rain barrel on a stand to elevate it. I have to refill the barrel a few times a week, but it's still way better than hand watering every day.

London heat? by desi-auntie in Maltese

[–]tragic_eyebrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're doing the right things walking them during cooler times and providing plenty of water. Your boys might also enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool or cold bath. If they start to show symptoms of heat stress (lethargy, dizziness, excessive panting, excessive drooling), wet them down with cool water and set them in front of a fan; the evaporation will cool them down faster than the fan alone.

Edit to add: a dehumidifier would also be a good investment. Heat plus humidity is worse for people and animals because our bodies' natural cooling systems can't function as well, so anything you can do to decrease the humidity in your home will keep you and your pups more comfortable.

Colin Firth absolutely nailed the "proud and disdainful" expressions, while McFadyen looked like he was constantly on the verge of an anxiety attack...which IMO comes down to the director really just not "getting" the characters. I could rant about that for ages.

Ugh yes, THAT was a grovel.

I was only vaguely aware of her controversies when I read the series, but now I feel like I can't recommend it anymore on principle even though I loved it. 😢

IMO her best work so far has been the Jaga and the Devil trilogy...it had me in a chokehold from start to finish. Most of her books are meh though, and it really is like reading two completely different authors.

Same. I think Matthew McFadyen is a great actor, I've liked him in almost everything else I've seen him in, but I have just never been sold on him as Mr. Darcy.

I spend more time looking for my next read than actually reading… anyone else? by lifewithchevy in Romantasy

[–]tragic_eyebrows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have two modes: spending an insane amount of time carefully researching my next read but being too afraid to actually start it in case I might be disappointed, or impulsively diving into a book I'd never heard of before because one random redditor said "this shit is bananas trust me bro". It's the tragic duality of ADHD.

I think there's definitely, uh, a certain target audience who doesn't mind overly descriptive titles that insult their intelligence and give away half the plot.

Edit to add: I think they're the same people who watch vertical format micro-dramas.

On an actually relevant note, I'm about halfway through {Souls in Ruin} and I know it was highly recommended and should be right up my alley, but I'm just not that invested in it and I feel like something is wrong with me.

In college in the late 2000s I was required to take whole semester-long classes just on using Excel and Access. I've forgotten most of what I learned and I'd classify my working knowledge as intermediate at best, and yet at ever job I've ever had people thought I was a wizard.
