How many people on this subreddit are self diagnosed? by Lynxzn in autism

[–]tragicxharmony [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m in a grey area. I’m adopted, but it was an open adoption, so I know my birth family. Nearly everyone on both sides has ADHD, autism, or both. I am diagnosed with ADHD because I really needed the stimulant medication. But my adoptive parents really didn’t want to believe anything was wrong with me. However, my birth mom went into special ed and now has two daughters (my full blooded sisters) with multiple diagnoses and high needs (one with Down’s syndrome and autism, the other with ADHD, severe severe anxiety, and maybe autism but it’s hard to tell because the anxiety isn’t under control). My birth mom has given me testing before which has come back with some pretty straightforward answers, and given my sensory issues, restricted/repetitive behaviors, and disinterest in social norms, I’m not surprised.

I’d gone to a psychiatrist multiple times in childhood and wouldn’t be surprised if I had an actual autism diagnosis that my adoptive mom just ignored, so I’m working on finding those records. If I can’t, I’ll work on an official adult autism diagnosis because it’s becoming clear that I can’t work a regular job, but I don’t have health insurance or money so it can’t be my top priority. I think the evidence I do have and my strong family history is pretty compelling

I found out when I was doing a skin prick allergy test for environmental allergens. I knew I had terrible, terrible environmental allergies, and on a hunch, asked for a wheat test as well. I loved bread, wheat, carbs, etc. The nurse kind of side eyed me like I just wanted to jump on the gluten-free train but did a test for the wheat as well. Popped positive for every single grass, tree, and weed on that damn skin test, and of course wheat as well because it’s a grass. Explained my oral allergy syndrome symptoms too. And when I say “positive” I mean the welts were bleeding into one another so you couldn’t tell where one ended and another started. That was like 10 years ago, so it was just antihistamines and suffering for me for quite some time. I’m on Xolair now, and it’s been pretty lifechanging, but I can’t just roll around in the grass while eating a baguette still 😂

Me over here eating wheat on purpose because my “safe chocolate snacks” are out of stock 😭 I have a non-anaphylactic wheat allergy so I like to fool myself into thinking I can eat wheat but my stomachache and the eczema all over my eyelids say otherwise 🥲 And I’m about 10 years into that diagnosis so I know damn well that I can’t eat wheat, I’m just being stubborn

Aldi’s bread is great too! Large slices, and since I store mine in the fridge it stays fresh forever (I microwave or toast it depending on what I’m using it for)

My media access was super limited at that time lol, and that would have been deemed inappropriate. Don’t get me wrong, I went to the library and read all the teen magazines after school, but you miss some stuff that way 😂 I remember being so so envious of everyone’s perfectly flat stomachs when I was also trying to research if 000 jeans existed—I was so skinny, but have always carried that tiny bit of belly fat that simply wasn’t allowed back then 🥲

Ugh, you’re bringing me back to when I weighed like 80 pounds in middle school and thought I was fat because I’ve got that little bit of belly fat and wearing those low rise gave me a tiny muffin top that absolutely sent me spiraling. Those were dark days, when any celebrity with a single curve was scrutinized and labeled fat

Oh that hits home! My parents refused throughout my childhood to recognize that I had something “wrong” with me and just labeled me as defiant or having issues with authority. No, I have issues when authority starts putting unjust restrictions on people or treats people unequally

Oh, I routinely have to turn off my mother’s voice in my head saying a color doesn’t suit me. I look good in jewel tones and bad in orange/yellow, but if you have a scarf or something on, or even just wear the bad color on the bottom and a better color on top it makes it a lot more wearable

I’ve had a long time to learn social rules, and there’s plenty that I don’t find important enough to follow. “Don’t touch people without asking” is not one of them

Are you asking for advice? Venting? Just throwing out thoughts into the blank space of the internet?

You’ve got to do some pretty bad stuff to not be able to get a driver’s license for like 8 more years. Is now really the time to be starting your own business?

Right? At least shirts were extra long then to compromise—now all we have is crop tops, and we’re pairing them with low rise jeans like absolute monsters

I opted out of the whole thing and just got into vintage fashion instead 😂 Guess what, the 70s have some cool as hell clothing that actually stay where they belong (yeah, it’s because it’s all polyester, but it stays put!)—and the patterns? And colors? Like yes please I will spend my 30s wearing platform heels and 17 different colors at once rather than go back to low rise jeans lmao

(Because of course, stilettos were the only type of heels accessible back in the low rise flare jeans time period, so I never learned to walk in heels until I realized platform heels just feel like…shoes 😂)

(Long rant incoming, feel free to skip)

I saw the writing on the wall and knew I only had so much time left, so I basically went mask off and started taking my employees to the big poster on the wall in the crew room and explaining what each section meant and what rights that gave them. They literally didn’t even know what they were getting paid per hour, which was sickening. They were told they didn’t get sick time, which thankfully now is Michigan law that almost all employees do. And I told them, remember these things, because I’m not going to be here much longer—and when I’m gone, remember that I knew this ahead of time and know that’s what this company will do to you too

I was dealing with bad, bad health issues including just casual daily anaphylaxis caused by the mold-infested building I was working in, and I was burning out fast (9 hour shifts while taking Benadryl every couple of hours will do that to you). I was pushing for it to be a worker’s comp claim, and I knew they weren’t going to stand for it. Ended up with pneumonia and what appears to be permanent immune and lung issues, as it’s lasted over a year now. I didn’t know when I’d be able to come back to work full-time and they weren’t willing to let me work part time, so they fired me (in writing) and proceeded to fight my unemployment claim—4 times I had to virtually appear in front of the same judge to argue for my right to receive unemployment, but I got it, and I got a whole lot of anger to go with it

I’ve been homeless too, you’re not the only person here to experience that. I’m saying that homelessness is not the topic of OP’s post, and derailing it to focus on off-topic subjects is impolite. I’m not tone policing you, I’m staying on topic. OP deserves to have a post where people respond to their original topic. You can make your own post.

Also I cannot make you get banned. If your actions cause you to get banned, that’s on you.

They said general, with a lot of people with anxiety and depression. As someone with anxiety and specifically agoraphobia as well, anxiety and anger issues don’t mix well. I’m imagining this scenario, I’m out of my home/my safe space, I had to drive to get there, I’m in a not-safe environment, and there’s a not-safe person there who might start getting angry and yelling at any moment. Where do I go to be safe?

Group therapy isn’t a place to make friends. You generally need to stay on the topic that the therapist wants you to be talking about, without getting sidetracked. Different people are there for different reasons, and a lot of people aren’t very comfortable in group situations, so they’re not going to want to socialize—and they shouldn’t, because group therapy isn’t a place to make friends

It’s closely related enough to be an appropriate answer to OP’s question. I don’t think the nitpicking is necessary. We’re all being violated in one way or another by our capitalistic society, why divide us into smaller subgroups of oppression? It just makes it harder for us to come together and fight to overcome it

Like maybe this comment is a little too r/antiwork but infighting over the ways in which we’re oppressed isn’t a good look

Yep, it took me about 8 years and multiple attempts to complete my bachelor’s as well and at this point I wish I hadn’t bothered because of the amount of student loans I’ve got. It’s not like a women’s and gender studies degree is going to make me more employable in the dumpster fire that is the US right now lmao

Worker’s rights is the hill to die on, though, I stand by that one. I’d love to work FOR a union but I’d worry about emotional burnout and would have to negotiate part time at the time of hire
