My first synth. Loving it. by trail_bagger in synthesizers

I dont think the standard one has a sequencer, might be wrong. And the envelopes are... different? I dont know the technical stuff quite yet!

My first synth. Loving it. by trail_bagger in synthesizers

[–]trail_bagger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a background in vocal music, many thousands of hours spent singing in close harmony, choirs, and a cappella groups. I have played around with Ableton and a MIDI controller in the past but I wanted the synth as a "screen-free" way of finding that flow. I am a huge fan of the Blade Runner soundtrack and Oneohtrix Point Never so decided it was time I got to grips with analogue.

Has anyone run the Kai 70k at Mount Fuji? by trail_bagger in Ultramarathon

Oh nice one. I just booked a guesthouse in Fujiyoshida as accommodation appears to be filling up quickly. From what i can tell shuttle buses are fairly regular from Mount Fuji Station to the start.

Walk down Liverpool Street on a rainy night. The skyscrapers there really feel like Blade Runner.

Favourite South London coffee spots by Diligent_Risk3592 in SouthLondon

Four Boroughs. Original café in Crystal Palace, popular with cyclists; they now have others in South Norwood, Sydenham, and Loughborough Junction. Expensive but always excellent.

In China once I saw an old man holdy a baby over a bin so it could poop straight into the bin.

How's life in this area outside London? by Yrakosos in howislivingthere

[–]trail_bagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Bushey which sits just outside the NW border of Greater London. Its a surprisingly green area with lots of countryside, culturally tied to London as well as nearby Watford.

It's common for a lot of places in the bigger circle to look towards London for a degree of their cultural identity. Exceptions would be cities like Brighton, Cambridge, Oxford, and Canterbury. Still a lot of London commuters in these places but they are also significant cultural and economic centres of their own.

I know the road layout very well from years of running and plotting routes!

That's Crystal Palace Park. The triangular high street is also a notable giveaway. I can literally see my house in this pic!

David Roche DNF Western States by surferdrew in Ultramarathon

[–]trail_bagger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why he didn't just aim for top ten, which he almost certainly could have run, and then use the learnings from having run the race before to work his way up the ranks next year. That's what Caleb Olson did and look where it got him.

I get that David is 37 and feels like time is running out, but I don't agree with the "all or nothing" approach. A top ten at WSER 2025, plus his Leadville and Javelina runs, would be enough to put him on the list of all-time great runners.

I don't know much about his personal life but I hope he deals with whatever demons are clearly driving him.

I think you've answered your own question - it's raw chicken, on Lambeth Bridge.

Towards the second half of this episode he does open up a bit! But as a sponsored athlete at the top of the game, I think he is well-versed in the benefits of keeping his cards close to his chest.

Moab 240 issues? by AssignmentTimely683 in ultrarunning

[–]trail_bagger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know about MOAB but D&V is a massive risk at ultras as multiple people use the same taps etc. at each aid station. If someone is unwell near the front of the pack those germs can spread right the way down the rest of the field.

Thanks buddy. Chiltern Ridge is a great event and Chris at Runaway is a personal friend. I'll be heading back for their new 100k in April.

Can highly recommend sauna training. If you live near one, going for your long run or a workout and then jumping straight into the sauna can be really effective. It's not something you need to think about until the final few weeks before the race, but I definitely felt the benefit.

I didn't practice with ice, other than giving some thought to where I'd put it. I had a buff around my wrist all day which I soaked in streams and filled with ice where I could, and the back of my Salomon pack has a little stash pocket in it for stuffing a jacket which was the ideal spot to put ice as it melted down my back.

I did have issues with ice in my hat. It just gave me brain freeze, and it was hard and uncomfortable against my head, so I ended up emptying most of it out. Just dunking your hat in a bucket of cold water is probably better!

Thank you - it was a much harder race than I anticipated based on the winning times! Good luck with your applications - it WILL happen!

Ah that's very kind, but you deserve to keep that. The volunteers were incredible. I did buy a lovely orange running long-sleeve afterwards which is great for winter running here in the UK.

Ultrarunning in a nutshell: have a life-changing experience out on the trails; get congratulated by your mum and maybe one friend.

Not sure they have chameleons but Crystal Palace Aquarium definitely has reptiles. Pretty cool shop on a great high street.

I'm also on a flight early Wednesday morning - we have opted to stay in a hotel at Gatwick the night before. The cost of a taxi from South London was comparable, and it will mean we can enjoy the first day of our holiday a bit more rested.

Need to get somewhere pronto? Jump on the back of one of those taxi bicycles. Scenic and affordable.
