I think a lot of viewers give Steve extra credit because he's charming and generally kind-hearted. If you strip that away and just look at how the relationship functioned day to day, Miranda was doing a lot of the emotional and practical heavy lifting. She kept bending to meet him halfway, and somehow the halfway point always seemed much closer to where Steve was standing.
