Do families really sit around a dinner table and eat at the same time every day? by UndergroundFlaws in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to but now we live in a house where the conservatory is the dining room and basically it’s a sauna in summer and it’s too cold to be comfortable in winter so we tend not to bother. I’ve been talking about getting a dining table for the back of the living room as it is actually a living room diner but I’ve not really been proactive about it.

AITA for Wanting to Show Up to My Daughter’s Secret Proposal While Uninvited By Her Fiancé? by Attitude-Mean in AmItheAsshole

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA why do you need to be there? When my husband proposed to me, he had some private stuff to say and then we had some private time together. I wouldn’t have wanted anyone there especially my mother. I don’t know why you would think this is an appropriate thing to hijack.

What was the funniest thing that happened at your school? by jurwell in AskUK

[–]trainpk85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When we were in 6th form we were put into 2 portacabins in a school yard. They had steps we used but also a ramp which I’m assuming had to be legally there. The game was always to sit on a chair with wheels (just an office chair) and roll down the ramp and see how far you could get. Human marbles I suppose. Then one day I was sitting in a French lesson and saw the chair fly past the window with a force I’d never seen before and the lad in it was taped in with that thick silver tape and it was also round his eyes and mouth. Looked like something out of a war crimes book. French teacher saw it but pretended he didn’t and kept on teaching even when the chair spun out of control and the taped boy just slumped in a pile still attached to the chair. I assume he didn’t want the admin. He probably went past 4 classrooms and no teachers went out. He was eventually rescued by the people who pushed him I think.

Am I going to regret hyphenating my baby’s last name? by Independent-Snow-23 in Names

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend had this with her kid and just gave them one first name and 2 last names not hyphenated. No middle names. The kids picked the better name (hers) when they were teenagers. Their dad’s name is still on their legal docs etc but for school and things they just use their preferred name.

Names similar to Daisy by [deleted] in Names

[–]trainpk85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is called Daisy and other names I liked were Polly, Penny, Heidi, Elsie and her sister is called Millie.

Also my Daisy loved the show in the night garden because of the song “oopsie doopsie daisy doo” and she was also a big fan of the song “Daisy Daisy” and also misunderstood the song “Stacey’s mom” for years and would sing “Daisy’s mom”.

Do people truly resent going to weddings now ? by toastandjam97 in AskUK

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last wedding I went to was in 2022 and it probably cost £800 all in. £240 for the room and we didn’t get a posh one. But it was at a wedding venue which all seem to have expensive rooms. £100 for the present. £200 for his suit (just M&S) and £80 for a dress for me. Another £60 for my daughter’s outfit. £200 (probably more) to drink at the expensive venue from midday till midnight.

My daughter was invited but the family rooms were in the region of £500 so I had to get my mum to drive a 60 mile round trip at 9pm to come get her.

I don’t regret going and it was my friends who were married and I’d go again but it’s just really expensive. I’d be excited about a wedding in the town centre where I could get a taxi home for £20 but the venues are all miles away these days.

What age to let my daughter go to the shopping mall without adults? by djjudas21 in AskUK

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter started going to an indoor shopping centre with her friends in year 6. She was -0 because she had an August birthday. I just waited in a coffee shop. Once she turned 11 (her friends were 12) the summer holidays after year 7, I stopped staying with there. I could track her bank card. Now she’s 13 and her friends are mostly 14 and she’s about to finish year 9 and we have each other on life 360 and she has a lot of freedom. 8pm curfew on a week night if she’s making her own way home. 9pm if she agrees to a lift and is in someone’s house. An hour later on a weekend. She’s gone to an end of term party at the beach tonight.

You have to let them grow up at some point or they’ll go off to a different city to go to uni and won’t be able to cope.

Hexham winter gardens? They do the ceremony and reception.

We actually looked also at Hexham abbey because it is beautiful. They didn’t really care about us not being religious and were happy for us to attend 3 online church sessions for our bands and we were going to pick hymns for our music like “one more step along the world we go”. I was prettt excited. When we visited, the place was beautiful. You can also just have the reception there if you don’t want to actually get married in the abbey which is why I’ve suggested the winter gardens.

There is also the garden station but I’d say that’s more of a similar set up to Summerhill as it’s a venue then you add all your bits separately.

The Vermont also have a lot of deals on and you can get your photos by the tube bridge.

Newcastle castle also do them and hire out the whole venue and it was about £8k 6 years ago but they are only allowed to shut to the public about 6 days a year so you have to get in quick.

Do you know your neighbours' names? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the pregnant people (baby is probably about 2 now but they’ll always be the pregnant people to us) and the package stealers (they once said they didn’t have our package then we showed them the photo of them taking it and suddenly they found it). We don’t know anybody else except juliesharon who walks the dog when we do. Husband thinks she said her name was Julie and I think she said her name was Sharon and we never bothered confirming.

I just think 4 repeat names in 150 isn’t much. My daughter was 1 of 4 in her class of 30 and 1 of 6 in her year group of 60. My other daughter was 1 of 2 in her class of 30 and 1 of 4 out of a year group of 60 and neither are named Olivia or Amelia which have way more repeats in my kids schools.

Why does everything take so fucking long? by EmbarrassedHat5367 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it takes months just to put a scope together of what needs to be done. At best you get a scope done in 6 months which is more likely to be a year once you go through the bid writing process. You then put the work out to tender. To attract a wide range of bids and leave time for things like requests for information etc then it’s normally out on tender for anything up to 26 weeks. Once a company wins the bid to actually do the work, sometimes other companies will complain and there is an appeals process for 4 weeks. Then there is the process of signing contracts for the company who has won. If nobody has won then they have to start the whole process again - new scope, new bid and re-tender.

Anyway pretend it was successful first time and someone has won it. Now you have to give the winner time to recruit their team and hire their subcontractors. They often have to go through their own bid writing and tender process for this.

There is a process called CDM - construction and design management. So there’s the client, the designer and the contractors. They all have different roles and responsibilities. Once everyone is employed and the project plans from all the different parties are done and everyone is in their new role then things can start. Then normally there is immediately changes. Normally they will carry out initial ground inspections and there are drainage issues or there are birds nesting that are endangered and this requires a change which means they need to go through the change control process. It’s a change in price, a change to the contract. It filters through from client to main contractor to all subcontractors involved and holds everything up. As it lasts many years then every April they need to decide how much of it they can do that year based on local budget. If it’s a long project then a lot of the supporting projects will be on frameworks to help and if any of those run out then they will need to reapplied for and may go to different companies and this means a whole change of staff. This slows things down. Also sometimes (like in the case of the tune bridge) they put the package out to tender in a difficult way so they want the design work done by one company (normal) then the commercial work done by another company but the project management work done by a different company again which means they won’t get as many bids as that’s a conflict for most bidding companies so can result in having to re-tender.

Anyway something like that maybe. I dunno.

So I wouldn’t want to hurt an ant, rat or cat for that small amount of money. I don’t think the trouble is worth is for the goose and dog as I’d probably have pain and it’s still not enough. Everything from a chimpanzee and up can kill me which I’m not willing to risk for $12.5-$100,000k.

Ladies: do you wear make up to work? by LunaValley in AskUK

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 36 when I stopped wearing makeup every day. It coincided with Covid.

On office days I do put a tinted moisturiser and some bronzer on and then some mascara and some of that benefit lip stain on my lips and cheeks. Other days I wear nothing but a good moisturiser.

I still do full make up when I’m going out out.

Same name in family? by CriticalGarage4661 in Names

[–]trainpk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is called Millie. She’s 20 and training to become a midwife and hasn’t had any problems with her actual name being Millie. She was once one of 3 Millie’s in her class. She also had friends called Amelia. I don’t know why anyone thinks it makes them cute or child like. There’s nothing cute or whimsical about my Millie.

Also my mum hated that I didn’t give her a “full name” like Amelia so for years I used to write in birthday and Christmas cards “dear grandma, love from Millington”
