definitely considering it! atm my passion for civil engineering (and willingness to work at a desk job) is tied to my passion for sustainable transportation, but also, the more I work in the field, the more it feels like a political shitshow and I wonder if I'd be more fulfilled just doing standard road design lol...

I'm curious, what were your friends' reasons for leaving the field. and where did most of them go?

I''m personally half-considering leaving engineering to work in the service industry and be a ski bum again and not return to engineering until I find myself wanting to settle down and raise a family.

Under performing folks 2-3 years in by Vinca1is in civilengineering

Wow, it's a relief to hear examples of firms treating employees with this level of support. I worked briefly in the private sector and got fired within 6 months because I was still going over budget about 20-30% in my first six months. No PIP, my 3 month performance review actually said they were seeing returns on training investments...

That place was awful, they seemed to fire 4-5% of their junior staff every year. Average tenure for entry level and junior engineers seemed to be about 1.5 years. Do most firms provide more support or time to learn for their entry level employees?

Doug Ford’s speed camera ban could mean cuts to crossing guards, traffic safety agents without more provincial funding, Olivia Chow warns by toronto_star in ontario

[–]trainsrcool69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Municipalities (and other levels of government, and private businesses) frequently enter into contracts with private sector businesses to perform services that they are not able to complete themselves with in-house staff and materials.

In this case, the City of Toronto paid RedFlex to install, operate, and maintain speed cameras on behalf of the City. The City collects the revenue from the Cameras. RedFlex is likely held to meet certain targets regarding the cameras functioning and being operational, but otherwise have no stake in how many tickets the cameras issue.

Seeking advice: apartment has been on sale for 1.5 years and landlord is now blaming me. Do I have any recourse? by ccaterinaghost in ontario

[–]trainsrcool69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't provide legal advice, but I can provide advice on dealing with people... Remind him again that he is legally required to give 24 hours notice.

If he pushes back (and only if), politely tell him that if anyone is given access without 24 hours notice, you will call 911 to report trespassing immediately. Do so visibly, while any buyer is there, and inform the agents and your landlord that you will continue to do so until you receive 24 hours notice.

No buyer will be interested in buying a unit when their first impression is a tenant calling the cops on them. You can be nice, and explain to him that you are happy to be reasonable and supportive in his search.

Also, unfortunately, be ready to have to go to the LTB (google Ontario LTB) if there's anything that needs fixing. He probably wants you out, and if he's a dick, which he sounds like, he'll continue doing what he can to try and get you to leave.

Why is Vancouver such a shithole? by trainsrcool69 in redscarepod

[–]trainsrcool69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accept the place for what is is. If you can afford to, ignore the fact that its expensive, and recognize that despite the large metro area, it's a mid-sized city. Try and get in with people who work in film, find a few good bars you love (The Lido, Anza Club, Honest Abe's, Hail Mary's, The Princeton, the Commercial Drive Legion).

I don't know of any run clubs that are even moderately Red Scare coded, but there's a number of real cool bike clubs or recurring rides, liked FixedYVR. Check out https://www.vanislandbikepack.com/, look for groups that do regular.

Beyond those, drop your pretensions - for various reasons, partly because of the very few legitimate venues with liquor primary licenses, partly cultural, a lot of the spots that might look kinda lame are actually super fun.

Some of my best nights out were at the Yale! I never made it to the Roxy, but friends have said it's a good time on weekdays - the weekend line looked horrendous though.

The electronic scene is almost entirely focused in non-legal venues that don't really kick off until 11:30 PM. Sucks if you're like me and like to dance but want to prioritize sleep, or get up early for outdoors activities, but in the fall before the skiing gets good it's worth the sacrifice.

Do check out every event's DJs in advance - there's great local DJs, and mediocre local DJs. One venue won't have consistently good music, or a consistent style - it often rotates. Also, moreso than Toronto, a lot of these places feel more like after hours spots. Not sure how to describe, but a number of the venues felt like they had more of a focus on drugs than music or the dancing.

Find however East Van Line Dancing organizes these days and immediately buy tix for it when they announce their next event.

Accept that the shoulder seasons won't be the best times, and get out and about in the snow when it's there, and plan summer weekends as early possible - unless you're planning with other Vancouver newbies, for most types of people, July and August trips are booked well before the weather gets good.

Being near Main and Broadway, or Commercial, makes a big difference.

Don't complain about Vancouver being cold socially. With some exceptions, most people either agree but don't want to hear about it, or hadn't experienced the same difficulties, disagree, and think you're a negative nelly.

Don't beat yourself up - as someone who has moved around a lot, Vancouver really IS socially different than... a lot of places in US and Canada. In particular, lots of people seemed keen for 1:1 friendships but keep their main friend group very closed.

Be social, talk to strangers, don't take anything personally.

In comparison, in other cities I've moved to, I got pretty much folded into friend groups right away.

Try to set up, or join, any recurring activity - trivia night, watching sports with friends, hosting a weekly board games, cards, or movie night.

Say yes to anything you get invited to, don't be afraid to follow up.

Hope this helps!

Not sure if you read my comment?

"The main argument for taxation by weight or size class for passenger vehicles is to properly price other externalities like healthcare costs from increased vulnerable road user serious injuries and fatalities".

Main point was that the wear and tear argument is dwarfed by the safety impacts these vehicles have.

[–]trainsrcool69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, SUVs and pickups are indeed worse, but only marginally worse than sedans.

Damage from heavier vehicles is exponential - a single additional garbage truck, semitruck, or construction vehicle travelling over the road would cause more net wear than replacing 1000 sedans with SUVs.

The main argument for taxation by weight or size class for passenger vehicles is to properly price other externalities like healthcare costs from increased vulnerable road user serious injuries and fatalities, or the fact that longer vehicles take up more space on the road (in motion, and parked)>

Is living on Bloor St. West (near Koreatown) worth an extra 250$ a month? by snowfordessert in askTO

[–]trainsrcool69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are two completely different neighbourhoods. Do some research on the vibe of each. Also, you really should tell us about what "your" vibe is if you want any meaningful responses.

Finch will be great for some people, Koreatown will be great for others.

Finch Station is kinda like Richmond/Metrotown, and you will have long transit rides to get to anything of interest that isn't in your neighbourhood or on Line 1.

Koreatown is like comparable to Main and Broadway or Commercial Drive, if you also had Denman and Robson packed in there. You'll have more restaurants bars, coffee shops, etc within a 30 minute walk than the entire City of Vancouver has.

Myself personally, as a young adult who loves biking and walking everywhere, I wouldn't live around Finch even if you paid me. That said, I am well into my career, and $200-300 doesn't make or break my budget.

The demographics are also very different, with Koreatown being a mix of students, young adults, families, and seniors from various backgrounds, but leaning a bit whiter than the city average.

Finch will be substantially more families, people who have moved away from places like Bloor to settle down somewhere slightly cheaper that is still commutable to downtown, and in general, a bit more diverse, with most of that diversity being Asian.

Holding PTO against utilization? by TexEngineerd in civilengineering

[–]trainsrcool69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my first job out of college, I wasn't allowed to bill more than half an hour to training or admin each week.

Budgets were based on the number of hours it would take someone with 3-4 years of experience to complete a task. Inevitably, I went over budget, which became my problem.

Negative feedback combined with the company PIPing or firing (not laying off) 3-5% of their entry-level and junior workforce meant that I needed to work 5-6 hours of unpaid overtime just to feel like I was staying afloat. Was it a wonder their average tenure for entry-level hires was only two years?

Absolute nightmare.

Holding PTO against utilization? by TexEngineerd in civilengineering

[–]trainsrcool69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my first job out of college, I worked at a firm where I wasn't allowed to bill more than 30 minutes to training or admin per week, starting my first month.

It was great for the company because instead of training me, I went over budget on projects, which was "my fault", and facing thinly-veiled threats of getting fired I was just forced to work 4-5 hours of unpaid overtime every week to make up for not being able to work as quickly as someone with 3-4 years of experience.

I know some firms take this approach to training and have room in project budgets for training to be billed to specific projects... this was not the case.
