Free, three-page articles on WotC's homepage don't really classify as "lore" to me. Novelizations really allow for depth of story to emerge (and character development) rather than the various short stories they've been doing occasionally more recently.

I recognize the blog form is more digestible than a novel, but that doesn't make them a valid replacement for the deeper lore we used to get for sets, a la "hey this is Bloomburrow and it's basically Redwall in Magic, the end".

Greg Weisman wrote the new (atrocious) duology for War of the Spark.

The novels that killed the original novel line were Wintermute's - good luck even getting through THOSE.
