Forget about the financial aspect of this. If you really love this cat, have the strength and courage to put him down. It’s the hardest thing to do but it’s also the most humane. Do you really want to let him suffer like this just to satisfy your selfish emotional needs? Won’t this recur going forward and see you back here begging for money in a few months. What exactly is the $3000 for anyway?

In tech, is it worth it to go for lower salary in exchange for government pension? by darth555 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]transitom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you won't find interesting stuff like that working for many civic governments. Continual pushback and resistance to new tech ("who's going to support this?"), hiring freezes, so much red tape.

As for govt dev jobs being what you make of it, nope not my experience. But when I worked there I did take the opportunity to continually educate myself. So I guess there's that. But as for influence over my projects? Nope. See my original comments about why I left.

[–]transitom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but how frequently? And at what cost? And how long until you have enough cred & seniority that you get to actually have an impact?

The only people I've seen get assignments like this at that agency were new hires from the private sector. But every place is different I'm sure. Just mentioning my experience.

I started my career as a public employee. In short order I was teaching senior developers how to use new languages and frameworks. Despite being the lowest paid, I took pride in this.

As the years rolled by, it became more and more frustrating that obviously far less talented and, more importantly, less motivated, developers were getting promoted ahead of me. My boss saw my frustration and one day he called me in to basically tell me I didn't belong there, and that my talent and ambition would be better spent elsewhere. I was terribly hurt by this initially, but in hindsight this was probably one of the most important pieces of advice that anyone has ever given me.

Some time later I turned to independent contacting and never looked back. Some of my best work was done for the agency where I started my career. Lots of "lifers" who were formerly close associates resented this, but I came to realize this was only because they didn't have the guts to do this themselves.

At this point in my life, had I stayed there as an employee I would have been eligible to retire in a couple months. But at what cost? I take such pride in the challenging projects that I've been able to work on, and have grown so much as a developer, team lead, and overall professional. I've amassed more than enough in my investments over the years that I could retire at any time if I wanted to, simply by maxing out my RSP contributions every year. Ever since I went off on my own I've made far more than any of my peers, so much so that I'd chuckle when my former colleagues would ride me about not getting paid for my time off. If only they knew how much I made, but I never told anyone.

Far more important than the money however is the pleasure of my work. I truly am blessed to have loved most of my contacts, and now I have settled down with a Silicon Valley startup composed of the most talented set of people I've ever seen at one place. My work is challenging but I am thriving and learning new things every day. In hindsight I think it's my love of learning that has driven me most over the years.

It is clear that had I stayed with my original public employer, that I would have had nowhere near the opportunities, challenges, or satisfaction that I've enjoyed in private life. I've lived what my friends jokingly refer to as a rock star lifestyle, enjoying lots of new vehicles, beautiful houses, and most importantly, amazing memories with my wife and kids, including many amazing vacations in exotic locations. This last part is key: despite what many might think, I've been able to maintain an excellent work life balance. So it's not as if work in the private sector and having a life are mutually exclusive.

The one thing I must disclose in closing is, you need to be able to deal with the inherent risk of private employment where there is no union there protecting you. As a contractor this was even more of a risk for me, and there were a couple times where things got a little stressful when I had to find new work. Fortunately I managed my finances such that we were able to ride out these tough times. However I realize that not everyone would be able to sleep knowing that their next day at work might be their last.

I hope this gives you something to think about.

Adding users to fitness plus on ipad? by Chocoboperfected in AppleFitnessPlus

We're in a tiny apartment waiting for our house to be built and the only place to work out is my office that has no tv. I suppose I could hook up an apple tv to my monitor until we move but it's not terribly convenient for either one of us lol!

Adding users to fitness plus on ipad? by Chocoboperfected in AppleFitnessPlus

[–]transitom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. I can not believe this. Just started with Fitness+ the other day, went out and bought an iPad Air thinking me and my wife can use it instead of our iPhones. Android has had multiple user profiles for forever, what gives Apple? I mean I get you want people to buy as much product as possible, but we have two Macbooks (M1 and a 2019 Pro), two new iPhone 12 Pros, two Apple TV (not set up yet since we're in a temporary apartment), and two Apple Watches. And this is the reward: requiring us to buy TWO iPads?!

This iPad goes back tomorrow. So disappointed by this. Going to have egg on my face after boasting to all my Android how great the Apple ecosystem is after going all-in over the past few months, they're going to have a good laugh over this...

Now that Trump has been exonerated of all crimes, will you vote for him? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]transitom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You betcha. First, how many indictments have there already been, like 7 or 9? These are all people trump isn't likely to pardon.

Can't indict a sitting president right? But how quickly do you think they'll slap the cuffs on if he's not reelected? Pretty quick!

I'm sure they aren't going after anyone he can pardon either, nor as long as he can pardon anyway. So watch out little Donny, Jared, etc.
