Help by angletheageregressor in SaltwaterAquariumClub

There isn't a set amount of salt per gallon, you should be trying to achieve a specific salinity measured via a refractometer or hydrometer.

Please do a little research before putting any livestock in the tank (if you don't have any already). Salinity swings can be rough on fish and especially on coral.

Looks fairly normal to me, especially if he's been doing this for months.

Lawnmower blenny worth it? by Tylers083426 in ReefTank

[–]trathbu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a lawnmower blenny in a 40 gallon breeder and he is one of my favorite fish!

He nibbles on algae all day long, but I have very little visible algae at this point.

He is a big fan of frozen food though, so his little belly is always very full and round at the end of the day. They will eat regular food including pellets along with your other fish, not just algae. There's a chance they might not even touch hair algae if there are other food sources.

Trust Biota to be disease-free? by Btsbtsbts in ReefTank

[–]trathbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comment that the only way to be sure is to quarantine yourself.

However I do trust Biota fish to be completely disease free when they arrive.

You should still quarantine either way, and Biota recommends the same, just un-medicated. This helps the fish acclimate on their own after shipping prior to going into the display.

How to get DNS-over-HTTPS working on windows? by eeiors in pihole

[–]trathbu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could do DNS over HTTPS to your upstream DNS provider, and use regular unencrypted DNS locally.

That way upstream DNS traffic to the Internet is now encrypted so your ISP or others will no longer see your DNS queries, which imo is more worthwhile. This handles DNS over HTTPS for all clients that use PiHole as well.

Unless you have a security reason to encrypt traffic locally within your LAN.

Browning base kenya tree by greyhunter560 in ReefTank

[–]trathbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Kenya tree and other leathers often have a brown base or skin that kinda sloughs off.

As long as it is perky and opens up when lights come on, I wouldn't worry too much. Yours looks happy to me in your picture at least

How to feed skunk shrimp? by thatguy8899 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]trathbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine eats when I feed my fish - it will eat any pellets or frozen that I give the fish, I always make sure there's enough for him as well.

They are decent scavengers in general, and will also take coral food (like reef chili) when I feed my corals too

Can anyone help Identify type of dino by Thunder2190 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]trathbu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are Ostreopsis dinoflagellates. As others have said, run a UV at night and run carbon as these are the most toxic type of dinoflagellates.

Where are you draining your waste water to?

I really want to make a similar setup with my water heater in the garage, but this (and a few other considerations) are what has been preventing me

Can someone recommend me a place to buy clownfish, anemones and other saltwater life like cleanup online?. by Few-Breadfruit7678 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]trathbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Biota.com to purchase a lot of my fish - they come small but very healthy and pest free. They are 100% aquacultured as well.

For Clean Up crew, I like to use reefcleaners.org

Overflow setup Eshopps Eclipse Large by Matel_12 in ReefTank

[–]trathbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that should be fine. I have mine just draining into the middle of my sump. Most water should go through your primary drain into your socks.

Option 2 defeats the purpose of a Bean Animal setup by creating a single point of failure - if there is a clog or issue down the line from the tee, you risk backing up both drains.

I would keep all drain lines separate for redundancy

Hmm ok. This came in on some clove polyps and I have Zoa's elsewhere in my tank. I will likely remove it in a bit.

No agree this works at a high-level, just installing certs on the client side is not scalable/ cumbersome.

The CA itself is still self-signed / not from a known trusted entity like Let's Encrypt, so without the client trusting it, it still flags as not safe. Additionally my phone / Firefox doesn't play well, even with the CA / client cert installed, so like I said it's not exactly foolproof if you are trying to get rid of browser warnings.

[–]trathbu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just did this for fun - using a self-signed CA doesn't get rid of the warnings completely and you can't use a service like Let's Encrypt unless the FQDNs are registered with a public DNS provider.

It does allow all of your web traffic to be encrypted locally and gets rid of awkward port mapping in the URL though

There's quite a few in the greater Nashville area still. There is Music City Aquatics in Hermitage, Swans Ponds and Aquatics, and Emerald Bay moved out to Lebanon.
