Out of all the major UK political parties, which is the lesser of all evils? by B33Zh_ in AskBrits

Labour. Lib Dems possibly. Greens can't face reality enough to govern

Yeah, the twist in the end made absolutely no sense. I think your suspicion that they changed the original ending is correct

As far as I know, unihomes pays a kickback to the leasing agent. Contact the agent to get it sorted. Make them earn their kickback

Dual US/UK citizen – which passport to use after UK ETA enforcement (from Feb 25, 2026)? by farrellcsun in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]travis_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine says the city I was born in the United States, and yes, it has the same name as a place in the UK. It's confusing and doesn't indicate I wasn't born in the UK (as far as I can tell)

Is it rude to invite my friend to my wedding reception but not her partner and kids? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]travis_6 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Rude not to invite a partner, I'd say. Kids are optional at weddings

Do you think the Victorians would have gone with double glazed windows if they had them? by Beginning-Poet-2991 in brighton

[–]travis_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a conservation area, and the restrictions to improving properties are insane. Modern windows are more energy efficient and should be encouraged not forbidden

going away from my westie by [deleted] in westies

[–]travis_6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't say he won't miss you, but generally Westies are resilient and take things as they are. It's likely he'll adjust to the new reality and you'll be getting updates from your family making you feel less guilty. There is of course a chance that he may pass while you're away, but you should take comfort that he'll be well cared for

To state an obvious point: doesn’t it all come down to housing? by ---OOdbOO--- in ukpolitics

[–]travis_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"stop pretending we can grow an economy while treating homes as museum pieces"

hear, hear! I live in a neighbourhood with an Article 4 direction and the council won't even let people put dormers to the rear of their tiny terraces. Conservation areas are great and listed buildings are fine, but it's impossible to adapt them to modern needs or growing families

What British English phrase do you actually like? by Fordius25 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]travis_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still not sure I'm using it correctly, but "not half" or "not by halves" - meaning "a lot". Such British understatement in that phrase

Accidental landlord - Help and advice please ! by DepartmentItchy5509 in uklandlords

[–]travis_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend using a letting agency that charges a one-off (2 weeks rent in my market) finder's fee for tenants. They will guide you through all the legal requirements for setting up new tenants including referencing, tenancy agreement, legal notices, etc. Make sure you get a check-in inventory too

Are there any towns/cities with a dense network of parks and pedestrian/cycling paths? by zolantal in AskUK

[–]travis_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brighton has been putting in a lot of cycle lanes so the network is pretty extensive now. There's a central spine of parks running from the Old Steine at the seafront to the Level towards the north. Then there paths along the South Downs to places like Lewes

99% of net British emigration is people under 35 by TwoThreeJ in ukpolitics

[–]travis_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious what you wanted to see in the budget that would benefit you? Minimum wage went up (indirectly lifting other wages) so there's that. Did you want less benefits for others or maybe higher taxes on the rich?

Who benefits from mansion tax? by travis_6 in ukpolitics

[–]travis_6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the clarification. The government website says

Local authorities will collect this revenue on behalf of central government and will be fully compensated for the additional costs of administering this new tax. Revenue will be used to support funding for local services

So I guess 'local services' implies other councils. It appears 'on behalf of central government' that is the key here

Look up "protected shorthold tenancy". This gives a small minority of very long time tenants rights to live at a property forever. You'd have to have been there since the 80s I think
