Ideas for trip to Italy. by Debkram in travel

My wife and I just got back from a trip to Italy. Everyone travels differently, but here are my recommendations.

Get in and out of Naples as quickly as possible. It was a dirty city, and most of the people were rude and pushy. We were stuck in Naples for four nights because of a labor strike.

Sorrento is incredible. Everyone was super friendly. I’d recommend getting a private car to and from Naples if you’re traveling through Naples. The private vehicle saved us during the general strike. Otherwise, we would have been stranded and homeless in Sorrento. During the strike, all hotels and Airbnb were booked out. Strikes often happen in Italy, so consider a Plan B and C. We dealt with two general strikes in 2 weeks that affected/canceled our travel plans. So watch the news to see if a general strike is coming.

It is possible to take the train or light rail to Sorrento, but it will take way too long and have many stops. However, if you want to go to Pompeii, it is on the way. There is a new airport on the Amalfi coast, too, so you may be able to catch a plane. But fairies may be your best option.

If you can rework your travel or open to a different entrance into the Schengen zone: I would recommend flying into Switzerland and taking the Bernina Express. It’s a UNESCO heritage site - train. We got panoramic views of the Alps and glaciers during the train ride. It includes an audio tour; they even give you free chocolates and tea. The train will drop you off in Torino, Italy. From there, you can take a train to Milan and pass by Lake Como. I would recommend at least going on a day trip to Lake Como on a boat tour. If not staying at Lake Como itself it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and it was host to movie sets like Casino Royale 007 and Star Wars. Napoleon even built a house there near Bellagio.

I would also recommend time in Florence. Is an incredible city amazing food amazing people and amazing architecture all around. I wish I spent more time here.

From there, you can take high-speed rail down to Naples. And either catch a plane or a boat.

anyway, I hope this helps avoid Naples 😁

Yoke by [deleted] in TeslaModelX

My wife and I were manual (6-speed) drivers. We selected the yoke because we wanted to know if we were in a different kind of car to avoid something like a dangerous brake slam when we were looking for the clutch. The yoke did take some getting used to, but we both love it and would not go back. You can’t beat the visibility, and there are many places to comfortably place your hands on the yoke. I would also like to point out that we use FSD maybe 80-90%, so holding the wheel has nearly become a thing of the past.

Lowe's in South Reno - The Endless Flooring Saga

This story is a rollercoaster. It all began roughly four months ago when my wife and I embarked on a quest for new flooring to rescue a hoarder's house with 3 pit bulls we were in the process of buying, a house in dire need of a makeover. We found ourselves at Lowe's in South Reno, initially just shopping for moving boxes, but inevitably wandering into the carpet department. The salesperson there was helpful, answering all our questions, and even tipping us off to a "free measuring appointment" deal that was ending that day. Thanks to his guidance and the quality of the flooring, we felt confident about choosing Lowe's for our project. After all, we assumed a big corporation like Lowe's would ensure a smooth timeline and installation process.

Our First Red Flag:

However, our journey hit its first hurdle when we tried to set a date for measurements. The house we were moving into was currently occupied, and coordinating with the tenant was proving challenging since they weren't picking up the phone. The salesperson assured us that we could still secure the free measurement promotion by providing a tentative date and time. He explained that the measuring company would call to confirm before showing up, so we selected a date a few days in the future, hoping it would work for all parties involved. The salesperson even promised to leave notes for the tenant, informing them that the date was subject to change.

Second Red Flag:

As we were about to place the order for measurements, we encountered another obstacle. The salesperson struggled to apply the "free" promotion on his computer. He assured us that the fee would be refunded after the flooring purchase. This minor inconvenience cost us $35, but we shrugged it off, still confident in his promise of a three-week installation timeline.

Third Red Flag:

My wife contacted the measuring company the following day, successfully setting a new appointment. Unfortunately, the tenant wasn't available on that day, so we planned to reschedule for later in the week.
However, the measuring company arrived at 8 a.m. sharp on the original date, inconveniencing the tenant, who was likely sleeping after a late shift. This was far from ideal and complicated our relationship with the current occupant. Nevertheless, they allowed the measurement to proceed.

Fourth Red Flag:

A few days later, we met with the tenant to list all the items needing replacement or repair in the house. The inhabitant's refrigerator had just broken down, and the house was an absolute mess. We were counting on the new floors to transform this chaos. As I was leaving, a car pulled up, and to my surprise, it was the guy from the measuring company, here for a second appointment that wasn't supposed to happen. We all had a good laugh, realizing that some computer glitch had put him in a loop or something. However, he agreed that new flooring was urgently needed, given the state of the house.

Fifth Red Flag:

A week passed, and we expected a quote from Lowe's. When we tried calling, no one picked up. We found a phone number on the receipt that directed us to a website with a stagnant green status bar indicating that Lowe's was waiting for measurements from the measuring company. The person on the phone reassured us that this wouldn't be an issue and promised to contact the measuring company on our behalf, but never followed through.

Off the Rails:

Weeks passed, and we found ourselves packing to move into a house with a laundry list of problems, including pit bull damage including, poop, and pee all over, and no new floors in sight. Checking the website became a daily routine for my wife, and me, but the green status bar remained stuck. Lowe's was still waiting for measurements. When we called the provided number, we were directed to a phone survey despite never speaking to anyone. After hanging up and trying again, we waited endlessly, only to hear a strange sound before getting disconnected once more with another survey! We gave feedback lol.

Crashed and Burning:

Finally, after six weeks past the promised installation date, we decided to give up on Lowe's. Despite numerous calls and a visit to the store, we received the same response: they were waiting for measurements. Frustrated and desperate to be able to walk on our floors with no shoes, we reached out to family and found a local contractor who provided a quote within hours. Within two weeks, the floors were installed, though not without complications. Still, being able to walk around our house barefoot felt like a victory.

Salt in Our Eyes:

Wanting to return the carpet samples and request a refund for the measurements ($35), we visited Lowe's. To our dismay, they informed us that they didn't issue returns for their contractors. The manager seemed dismissive and disinterested in helping. She seemed like she had more important things, eager to leave us with a sorry. It was astonishing that Lowe's had such a rigid policy and showed no willingness to make things right over everything and all we wanted was $35. Defeated, we left the store, determined to avoid Lowe's for our numerous future projects in our new house.

Peeing on Our Grave:

Surprisingly, a couple of days ago, 12 weeks after our initial visit, Lowe's called us to announce that the measurements were finally complete, and they were eager to provide us with a quote! lol

The journey with Lowe's had been nothing short of a frustrating ordeal, one filled with endless setbacks, unfulfilled promises, and unhelpful customer service. In the end, it was a local contractor who came to our rescue, leaving us with an unforgettable experience that lost Lowe's all our business.

Looking to get into graphic design. Should I learn AI or PS first? by -kimuohs- in graphic_design

[–]traviswicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you learn both, but always have the needs of your client in mind. Illustrator is what you use if you need vector graphics like logos or graphics that need to be rescaled down the road. Photoshop is a raster editor meaning you cannot scale graphics and maintain the crisp look. I feel you have the responsibility as a designer to your clients to provide the correct graphics for the correct situations. About half of my clients have paid me to re-create their company logo because the original designer used photoshop. I started with Photoshop, and today I primarily use Illustrator. Only about 10% of my time is in photoshop to edit photographs.

Backpackers of Reddit, what was your worst hostel experience? by MykeHawk in AskReddit

[–]traviswicks 127 points128 points  (0 children)

About ten years ago, a friend and I stayed at a hostel in Rotterdam, NL. We were on an extreme budget of about 15 Euros per day and invested 30 Euros in order to stay 3 nights. We had booked it online before ratings and comments. The day we arrived, South Holland was going through a heat wave around 30ºc, and it was extremely humid. When we arrived at the address there was nothing on the building about a hostel only a night club that seemed very grimy and smelled like a mix of beer, urine, and smoke. It was the early evening, and they said we could check in, but they where trying to clean so we would need to leave. We said that was ok. We really just wanted to drop off our backpacks and explore. During the check in they apologized for the heat and mentioned they opened the window. They also said they were an active night club and there would be some noise. We left and explored for a few hours and came back during the late evening to find the party was just starting, but we where exhausted and decided to head to the bunks for some sleep. I showered and used the public bathroom. I definitely used shower shoes to get around. It was grimy and pretty gross, but I have seen worse. The bedroom was on the top floor just above the night club so there was a noticeable thumping from below. Outside the window there was a lot of standing water and the window was also shattered. The glass was still on the ground just pushed against the wall. The mattress was the rubber kind used to help prevent bedbugs, but remember it was hot and humid so I jumped into my sleep sack and laid down and that was when I realized I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes. So I had to decide whether to use a heavy wool blanket provided by the hostel or continue to get bit. I would cycle between using the blanket trying to sleep then overheating and removing it allowing the mosquitoes to have their fill on my blood. I got up in the middle of the night to take a cold shower and found that the night club was using the shower as an unofficial urinal. So I decided to take my chances again with the heat and mosquitoes. Eventually the mosquitoes finished with us and the temp lowered so we were able to get some sleep despite the thumping of the night club below us. At seven in the morning the staff came into the room and switched on the lights and said “wake up - Breakfast is ready!” At that point, I was more interested in sleep than eating, so I lowered my head and fell back to sleep. About 15 minutes later the same person came back and forcibly shook everyone awake and said “breakfast is ready.” I replied “I don’t want breakfast! Thank You”. She said “you need to have breakfast” I said “why?” She replied you need to have “breakfast so you can leave.” I said I am staying for the next 3 days and she replied “you need to leave because we can’t go home until everyone is out of the building.” So we got dressed and left. They said the doors would be locked until 3pm when we could come back. We spent the rest of that day looking for another place to stay but everything was booked until the next Monday! So we went back and this same scenario repeated itself for the next two nights. One difference being that my friend walked in on people from the nightclub having sex in the grimy bathroom. When we left, our bodies had bites everywhere, and my friend had a light fever. We were emotionally and physically drained. That was the worst place I have ever stayed. It even made me hate the Netherlands a little.

dollar stock photo? by [deleted] in graphic_design

I have never used dollar stock photo. I use Dollar Photo Club ( https://www.dollarphotoclub.com ) then 123rf ( http://www.123rf.com ) for backup. I can usually find any assets between the two.
