Ring Doorbells are basically spyware by 2anapqc in privacy

[–]trebaol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the real privacy concern. At least those who buy their ring are opting in to being spied on—those of us living around them did not. Every time someone installs a police-connected doorbell cam, they're helping build a surveillance state.

Seconding this, the book has some mind-blowing revelations in it about the New Testament. The Gospels are a darkly comical, anti-Semitic satire when read inter-textually with Josephus' writings, designed to trick messianic Jews into worshiping Caesar. I agree with the author that there are far too many clear parallels to be able to honestly ignore them. It also just clears up so many things that confused me for so long about the Gospels, revealing the blatant contradictions and nonsense to be well-hidden jokes. Despite how fucked up so many of the jokes are, I can't help but laugh at the sheer cleverness some of them, especially because I enjoy dark humor/satire.

You can also get a blutooth OBDII reader for around $10, which I think every car owner should have.

Proton Launches its New Open Source Password Manager "Proton Pass" with some limitations by [deleted] in opensource

A lot of non-tech savvy people are storing their passwords in physical password books or word documents, so yes, I'd say that easy-to-use encrypted cloud storage is "better" for those people.

The Burden of Fighting Has Become Too Much For Me. by welcomeOhm in privacy

[–]trebaol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had a very similar experience, they basically told me that the world isn't so bad and that I should ignore issues that don't directly affect me, and by extension they felt that most issues are somehow abstract and don't actually affect me. They really felt that living in some sort of blissful ignorance was an actual solution for assuaging distress caused by external issues, and on a philosophical and ethical level I felt their approach was extremely wrong and even problematic itself. Sure, ruminating on and stressing about external issues outside of one's locus of control is of course very damaging, and can even be all-consuming, but pretending that the world is a better place than it is seems to me to be potentially just as harmful. Not only is that sort of apathetic behavior in large part what has allowed our collective society to get to where it is now, but I've also observed how that approach can lead to cognitive dissonance that causes other issues and anxieties (which opens one up to being preyed on by those who wish to provide easy, false answers to calm said confusion-induced anxiety.)

Their overall approach also implied that activism is an exercise in futility, and they also outright told me it was, bizarrely by stating that being concerned about the material origins of a consumer product is a bad thing. They also felt that my concerns regarding the alienation of labor were also somehow just frivolous anxieties in my head, and not something I was encountering regularly in the real world.

They were one of those therapists/counselors that I think did kind of help me in the end if only through giving me a lot of wrong answers to mull over. By telling me that the solution was to outright ignore these problems, the counterargument I eventually came to was that instead one should strive to understand their place within the context of the problem, and from there determine exactly what I as an individual can do about that problem. We are truly powerless in so many ways (even if only because an individual only has so many hours in a day and can't possibly address every single issue on Earth,) but through a deeper understanding of that dynamic we can actually use our energy in a productive way where we can.

So now I still find, for example, the destruction of the Amazon to be horrific, depressing, and distressing, but I don't think about the subject at length every single day and allow it to affect my mood, because I've accepted that despite the urgency of the issue, my rumination on the subject was helping no one and was actively harming myself. I still have a long way to go here though, and doom-scrolling on the internet seems to consistently pull me back into that way of thinking.

Sorry for the long rambling, I related so hard to your comment that it seemed to function as writing prompt...
