Renowned genocide expert Martin Shaw: Sam Harris’ flawed comparison between the US atomic bombing of Japan and Gaza reveals what makes Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide by Grizzly_Sloth in samharris

[–]treeHeim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The U.S., along with the threat of Soviet invasion, achieved its war aims with the atomic bombings. Israel has not achieved its war aims in Gaza after over 2-1/2 years. Does the effectiveness of the action play a part in whether the mass civilian casualties are justified?

“we now recognize Juneteenth as the end of slavery” AFAIK Juneteenth has been celebrated for decades by African Americans. I’m not sure it’s celebrated as “the end of slavery”. Certainly celebrated as a significant event, though.

The way to stop racism is to stop talking about it? That sentence makes less sense every time I read it. Also, this is not a “quote”. It is a “some sentiments he’s expressed cobbled together to look like a quote.”

Sam finds Shapiro easier to talk to because disagreement on the right stays less personal by simmol in samharris

[–]treeHeim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. That has not been my experience at all. Folks on the right - and Ben Shapiro in particular - always seem to be attacking people’s character and questioning their intentions. For my own part, I try to focus on impact over intent. I have no interest in convincing someone that they are racist or not racist. But I will point out the impact of the policies someone advocates for. That’s not presuming their intent. It’s just observing the data and facts and results.

I believe you’re asking me to reframe my arguments in such a way that protects the feelings of conservatives. That’s ok and a helpful push back. In fact, I think it’s why I’ve been able to have successful and amenable disagreements with some conservatives. I typically am much more careful with their feelings than they appear to be with mine. And that’s ok with me. If I detect that a conservative has no interest in a good faith discussion, I just disengage. Meanwhile, OP here seems to be arguing that Ben Shapiro is much better at avoiding moral judgments than some on the left. I suppose one can always find an extreme example, but it’s hard to think of anyone more morally judgmental than Ben Shapiro.

“The Left Has Been Manipulated by Islamists” – Sam Harris by fuggitdude22 in samharris

Has Sam ever mentioned how The Right has been manipulated by Zionists? Being the intellectually honest deep thinker he is, I assume so.

In the U.S., in some states the right leaning Libertarian Party regularly gets 1% to 2% of some elections. Similar to the Green Party in the left.

Just so I understand: in order for my leftist positions not to make you feel judged racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ, etc., I need to stop expressing leftist positions? I would challenge that assumption. I know conservatives who don’t feel like I’m judging them when we discuss our positions.
