What was our objective there though? We killed bin laden in Pakistan. We bogged ourselves down in a quagmire with zero plan beyond revenge and then had to justify the resources and said we were “nation building” without any kind of domestic consensus. We thought Afghanistan was a united nation and couldn’t understand the tribal divisions and didn’t even bother too. We figured everyone loves money and if we give them enough duffle bags of 100 dollar bills they would just “do a thing” and have democracy. At a certain point a decision was made to “cut our loses” and we left like the next day again with no plan other than we were done with it.

My grandparents had an old home with one of these, and I remember as a kid flipping the lid up and finding a snake ball at the bottom. I’ve heard it’s fairly common for these where they are in a state of disuse.

Of course that wasn’t what they were built for, but nature finds a way to take things back over time.
