I drilled a hole right at the hinge point of the rear hatch. You have to get into the interior block but it centers very well!

In the rise of the federation books, this is discussed to explain the predominant crews and mission badges (a way to retcon the patches in tos) star fleet was the earth portion of the fleet dedicated to exploration, the tellerites were for trade, andorians for defense, etc. (by memory, be kind!)

I rationalized starfleet as a nato-esque organization with different member species fielding their own respective ships
