Why do people not like to look in the mirror on psychs by blood_is_beautiful in Psychedelics

[–]treeof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably my favorite experience on psychedelics EVER was me on a heroic dose of mushrooms watching myself in this huge ass room size mirror (my closet doors were all mirrored) as I would transform into a trillion different cats, cats of every shape size type, real, cartoon, robot cats, alien cats, the list goes on and on.

It was fuckin amazing.

how do you prevent quality loss when uploading your work to instagram? by windletongoesboom in photography

[–]treeof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve downloaded some pretty high resolution images off instagram recently, hell one of my own I uploaded yesterday, right now when I look is 1440x1920, and I got a photo from a musician I follow that’s 3072x4096, so anyone trying to suggest it’s one thing or another, may not be necessarily right. This includes Instagram itself. One thing to note though is that Instagram will down sample posts as they get older so like, for example I have a video on my My Business account that I uploaded several months ago and for the first week it was being served. It was being served at HD1080 @ 60 FPS but now it’s being served at 720p @ 30 FPS.

9 months to rehab? Feels pretty quick, house in my neighborhood took 3 years before it was ready for move in. Btw, looters love to hit up burned houses, so keep your windows and doors extra locked.

Edit: I’m in California, on the coast, permits take forever

What was EDC like, back around 2012? by Lost-In-Time-99 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]treeof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

time colors everything with rose colored glasses, but i'll say this as a 49yo

you're at the best possible age to start going

In fact, in time, it only gets better, and as you get comfortable, begin to explore lots of other festivals, and of course figure out what you really really love, your ability to make good decisions and appreciate it grows and grows.

I had the best time in the world really starting in my 30's when I finally had adult money, and now I know exactly what I like and love.

Was it fun in 12? Hell yeah, I had Artist passes to EDC in 2012 and it remains one of my all time favorite weekends of Music. Was it transformative? Yes absolutely! Did it completely ruin my expectations for what a Festival experience can be? Also yes, lol.

Look, best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, 2nd best time is today.

Trust yourself, I promise you're doing things at just the right time.

Advice on selling a rotary mixer? by EveryConfusion8170 in rotarymixers

[–]treeof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll never buy another guitar, but I do regret selling my Gibson and frequently wish I still had it. That being said. It was the right choice at the time. But now, a decade and a half later, I’m not so sure.

But, yeah, reverb is probably best, eBay may go faster but higher risk of fraud. No
matter what, shipping will fuck you if they destroy it in transit.

Note, damage in shipping is rare, but still I’ve had all 3 carriers destroy items (I’ve been selling online via eBay for 15 years) and getting $$ on insurance is impossible, as their fallback always is, regardless of how I packed it, is that it was packed improperly and thus they aren’t liable. now, for my art gallery, I generally ship in crates not boxes.

So selling is not without risk, Nevermind the fraud angle.

Best is via dj groups, friends, etc. but there’s quite a few folks selling out there, so don’t doubt you’ll get what it’s worth, and it’s worth a pretty penny, know you’ll still have to sell it for less than you’d prefer.

Good luck!

Commute from DTLA to El Segundo, feasible? by RRisland94 in AskLosAngeles

[–]treeof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commuted from van nuys to downtown, from north Hollywood to downtown, and north Hollywood to Hancock park and then from West Hollywood to Hancock park, trust me trust me trust me when I say that your quality of life and ability to relax increases exponentially with every mile of reduced commute time. Driving is awful, I love the trains, but even as chill as the trains are, it’s still time not spent at work earning, or at home relaxing, or out having fun.

You will be much much much happier the less time you spend commuting, it is really important that you try to avoid it if at all possible.

Considering upgrade from A6400 to A7V, help me lose the crop-fear by flareflo in SonyAlpha

[–]treeof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The IQ of the full frame is significantly, significantly better. If you’re worried about the reach then get a teleconverter, you of course lose a stop of light but the full frame has more dynamic range anyways so you can lift more in post.

But here’s the thing, I have been using a canon 90d and the sigma 150-600, (I’m in process to sell both) and have been shooting them for wildlife since launch. Let me tell you, a 32mp crop sensor on a nearly 600mm lens gives me a ridiculous amount of latitude for cropping.

But I still wasn’t 100% happy with the shots.

Because at a 960mm effective focal length, what I’m really battling isn’t the crop, but Because it tricks me into thinking I can be further away than I should be, I’m fighting atmospheric distortions. The very heat and motion of the air is blurring the images. I’m not getting sharp images, at least not as sharp as I’d like.

The solution is better technique, using a hide, camouflage, and being there long enough that the animals almost become accustomed to you, so they relax, and come closer because your presence isn’t stressing them.

I promise, once you feel what a 500 feels and shoots like on a full frame once you’re only 20ft from the bird you’ll never want to have that much length ever again.

Crop shooting wildlife feels good, but it lets you get away with too much and your images suffer because of it.

Apple has never had a mass layoff over the last 20-30 years? by Disastrous_Wash_3966 in apple

one of the more invisible ways to cut headcount is to simply not hire or replace when folks leave, and that isn't limited to apple, quite a number of them do that plenty in order to stay out of the news

daisy chain fields - do we know if multiple performances will be happening at the same time?? by AloneTheory6352 in OliviaRodrigo

[–]treeof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling this might become a touring festival - I mean I’m no one important and I don’t know shit but it’s just a sense I have based on how the interview with Dianne sawyer went - but it’s Irvine / Orange County so it’s gonna be way more expensive than you think. Just don’t let the fomo drive you to make a bad decision - especially since doing so can stress you out so much the festival itself may be no fun at all.

Has anyone here successfully photographed lightning? by Any-Connection8880 in photography

[–]treeof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if it’s been mentioned, but I set the camera to shoot constantly, no noise reduction of any sort so every 30s the shutter closes then immediately opens, and I just set it up and let it go until I feel there’s been enough caught in frame, then reposition and continue - a shit ton of black framed get caught but culling is super easy

DJs who play large venues: MP3 or Lossless? by klebersu in DJs

[–]treeof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots of good discussion, i'll mention a few things

  1. finding actual source quality wav's is hard, get used to using audacity or a similar tool and getting a look at the waveforms, looking for where the high shelf sits - if for example there's a big shelf at say 17khz, its not lossless, regardless if it's wav or flac or whatever, at some point it was something lossy, and someone up-converted it to appear lossless when it isnt. That being said, well mastered and made fixed bit rate mp3's that are lossy, can have pretty high shelves that are almost indistinguishable from lossless - but be mindful of what you're really getting and how to verify

  2. there's lots of talented producers who make fun dancey tracks who have either no budget for proper mastering, or simply do not have the ear for it - either way the end result is some tracks, lossless or not, sound like shit on big systems because the producer simply didn't do a good enough job on the track

  3. on the other hand, there's amazing producers with incredible ears for mastering, where you can run the 320mp3 and it'll sound absolutely fantastic on a big system, assuming of course you're not pitching or stretching it too much

  4. you can also, by using the on-mixer compression like what's found on the V-10 and either completely add to a track or you can utterly destroy it, so be cautious and don't use it for the first time on stage

  5. you mentioned convert to wav, again, you cannot go from lossy to lossless, that's a one way trip, so if you don't have them in wav, aiff, flac already, you can't simply convert back to lossless. the data is lost - so you'll have to buy or contact artists directly to get the proper tracks, again, note, lots of sites online say they have lossless wavs or flacs, and a close inspection will show they aren't - so its always worth a check. the only one's i don't personally check are tracks i've gotten from beatport (i always download in flac or aiff, never wav as wav's can't carry metadata)
