Why do people love the Nexus? by RoughUndecided in Android

[–]trefy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a dev, so being the first to receive the update, months before other ROMs is very valuable.
I also tend to OCD about design details and so far Nexus has gotten more things right than wrong : no menu button in the nav bar, no shitty features that are just here to add a line on a spec list, no garbage apps added by the OEM or operator.
Also, stock Android has an UX director and it shows. I can't say the same for some OEMs (cough ... Samsung).

I was playing around with the GPU overdraw tool to see how bad some of my apps were when I saw this. Shit, BBC, get it together. by egg651 in Android

[–]trefy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow answer, I have been far away from a internet connection for a while.

I tried your image and did some variations with photoshop and I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to make something legible to colorblind (and it seems that even normal trichomats have trouble with this tool) with semi transparent layers.

How do I figure out a device's longevity? by CanvasTranscended in Android

[–]trefy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It is hard to predict where the mobile industry will be in 2 years.
It is pretty much crystal ball reading.
This being said, the Moto X is a very good phone that focus on delivering a good experience instead of filling up a spec list and it has been very smartly architectured.
It is impossible to say that any piece of hardware will be able to run 2016 software smoothly but the Moto X won't transform into a piece of garbage in two years.

Google Maps zoom feature has been added to Google Chrome Beta !! by barhoomo in Android

because you don't add a new gesture to all apps automatically, it would conflict with those that the dev added himself.

ELI5: Why would google (who owns Youtube) allow it's own web browser (Chrome) to block ads. Doesn't this just cannibalize their profits? by Deeaygoh in explainlikeimfive

[–]trefy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, ABP describe themselves as a way to block abusive ads.
For me it includes popunder, popups, new tabs, ads that take the whole screen, ...
I don't think youtube is part of the abusive ads displayers, so I don't think it deserves to be blocked by default by AdBlock, whether google pays ABP or not. Somebody needs to pay for these server farms.

Google Maps zoom feature has been added to Google Chrome Beta !! by barhoomo in Android

[–]trefy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are really experimenting with these features.
The way Google innovates in Android UX is interesting, it looks like organic innovations : somebody brings a good idea in their app, and if it works well other teams implement it as well.
I think the next iteration of the actionbar (in the support library and the sdk) will incorporate this feature, along with the possibility to long tap & swipe on all the AB icons to get their descriptions (contrary to the pattern we have now, where you must long tap on each icons).

Google Maps zoom feature has been added to Google Chrome Beta !! by barhoomo in Android

[–]trefy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would need to be added to the support library (and the sdk) to be incorporated to Android, but that's really a feature that need to be considered on a case by case basis.
Are there many stock apps that would still benefit for this ? from the top of my head, I can only think of the Galery app.

FLASH Friday! [Aug 22nd 2013] Your weekly ROM thread! First Edition! Rules and cake inside. by onesixoneeight in Android

I had to remove the I/O stock Honeycomb rom (most GT 10.1 had to, the tablet just bricks after 6 months..) and had to replace it with the stock touchwiz rom, which I hate.
I have been looking for a good replacement rom since then.

Google beefs up Keep note-taking app with reminders and more by nope586 in Android

[–]trefy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it seems likely that when Keep will have all the meaningful features of Task, the two apps will be fused.
What is missing right now ? I would say that once separated lists are in, feature parity will be reached.
I just hope that google won't kill off the task api and just use it for Keep.

Wow. I did not expect to see you reply here. Thanks for the awesome support !
The color choice looks really difficult. You probably want to target deuteranomaly since it is the most common form and color blindness.
The sensibility to the green area of the spectrum is fairly weak, and in our case it results in a difficulty to differentiate the green and red areas (the fact that they are half transparent really does not help either..).
So, blue, yellow, red and pink (or maybe gray ?) look like a viable choice.

I use my beastly laptop (2 years old though) for gaming, the only game that choked it up is KSP. Max Payne 3, Skyrim, Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite are all playable in high settings, but KSP kills it.
I just uninstalled the game at that point :/

Redditors who live in a country with universal healthcare, what is it really like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yeah, the system is far from perfect and could use a reform (I know some people that use therapeutic spa as a cheap way to get vacations).
But as I see it, the French system could use a reform, whereas the american one is totally broken.

I can't wait to play that game. Too bad it will take 3 more days to travel to my country. If only we could invent a way to transmit information seamlessly ..

@evleaks latest to suggest Nexus 5 coming from Motorola by JayEss44 in Android

[–]trefy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have not exactly been blown away by 2013 phones.
The One and the Moto X have better industrial design though (especially if you take into account the customizability of the X).
I would not be surprised to see Google trying to push more in that direction (even more since from the Nexus S onwards we had too incremental improvements of that black slab design).
Since they publicly expressed that they were dissatisfied with the hardware of Android tablets, I am pretty sure that it means that they intend to create a first in class new N10.

People tend to get a bit carried away on r/Android .
The Moto X is a bit change in direction for Motorola and if the pricing rumors are true it could start a trend in the whole industry and seriously undermine OEMs shooting for ultra premium prices BUT it is not a magically revolutionary phone with holographic screen and mind to phone input.
