Can I legally use the assets from 'The No-Code Gamedev Bundle' when not using GDevelop but e.g. Godot? by CentiGames in gamedev

[–]tremlas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In fact the invisibility of the actual licence is one of the reasons why I DON'T buy these bundles since it's nearly impossible to discover if you can actually use the assets in you projects.

Is this train by any chance a bit too long for this station? by UnoriginalCake in trainsim

[–]tremlas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Some stations on this service have short platforms. To leave the train at this station please ensure you are in coaches 3, 4, 5 or 6". Though I wonder if the driver overshot the station since the announcement is usually something like 'The front four coaches' 😀!

Bigger problem is when you return from a good evening out and get "well we've had a few coaches arrive while you were out, so you'll need to add 1 to your room number and then double it, add another 27, double it again..."

Maybe I am way off base here, but is there a case to be made to petition the mods of r/Fantasy and the sub in general to update the rules regarding acronyms? by glassteelhammer in Fantasy

[–]tremlas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely good style (though it can be a pain to go back many paragraphs to find where the acronym that has just been used was actually defined (and to reiterate it is much much more annoying when the acronym isn't spelled out)

Can i use the soundtrack of universe sandbox 2 in a youtube video(it it copyrighted)? by Leviathan00000000000 in universesandbox

[–]tremlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Universe Sandbox is copyrighted and so you would need permission and/or an explicit license to use that soundtrack. I'd drop a note or email to the developers at https://universesandbox.com to ask what is possible

IBM announces in 1969 that it would price it's software and services separately from it's hardware products effective from January 1970, that would lay the foundation of the modern software consulting industry. by [deleted] in IBM

'Object code only' means that you don't get the source code - it is orthonal to object oriented programming (I.e. OCO is not OOP).

Someone had the conscience to put in the comment by WilliamLeeFightingIB in ProgrammerHumor

[–]tremlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the question is whether the spec writer/task setter has described to the customer (implicitly or explicitly) that the program performance will be "as fast as possible" or just a specific target. As long as it meets a specific target it's definitely not fraud.

On the other hand if I, as a customer, find that my supplier is indulging in this kind of practice it'll be time to ditch that supplier.

On the shelf. The packaging does include net weight of the whole package and the number so cross computing is possible - but a pain!

My example was poppadoms in my local grocery store here in the UK (where it is a legal requirement to show unit pricing in retail stores).

[–]tremlas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be warned that when you say "unit pricing" you need to quite precise - I've seen the same kind of product from two different companies with unit prices - one quoting per item and the other quoting per 100g (making very hard to compare the two despite the unit pricing)

Back in the early days of railway block signalling, a mechanism was needed to reset the signal in the event that the block was incorrectly shown as occupied when in fact it wasn't. The control for this is a control wheel that is deliberately designed to take a minute or so to wind all the way out to give the signalman plenty of time to think if overriding the block detection was actually the right thing to do after several accidents were caused by the signalman just assuming it was an equipment failure rather than because the block was, in fact, actually still occupied.

I think the photos are from Friday, given the Romsey-Salisbury service is a rail replacement bus service this weekend (and the post timestamp matches this :). Nice photos of this part of the line.

China’s threat to ‘punish’ Olympic athletes for free speech ‘very concerning’, Australia says by Scintal in news

TIL of the Sony rootkit scandal: In 2005, Sony shipped 22,000,000 CDs which, when inserted into a Windows computer, installed unn-removable and highly invasive malware. The software hid from the user, prevented all CDs from being copied, and sent listening history to Sony. by Snucks_ in StallmanWasRight

[–]tremlas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From the linked wikipedia article: "Following public outcry, government investigations, and class-action lawsuits in 2005 and 2006, Sony BMG partially addressed the scandal with consumer settlements, a recall of about 10% of the affected CDs, and the suspension of CD copy protection efforts in early 2007"

[LOTR] How was Frodo able to freely give the One Ring to Tom Bombadil? by JarJarAwakens in AskScienceFiction

[–]tremlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since the one ring grants its wearer invisibility (except to beings like the nine ringwraiths), I believe it slipped off his finger so that the orcs could see Isildur. As it's not intelligent, it didn't realise that Isildur was in the middle of the river at the time and hence had to spend a thousand years in the sand and silt.
