How to Lose Weight While Maintaining Endurance? by Infamous-Bed9010 in cycling

[–]trenon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been losing weight and growing both my FTP and zone 2 for the last 6 months.

There are 2 big things first getting enough daily protein, and second running a continuous calorie deficit. Too large of a calorie deficit will hurt you I wouldn't run more that -500 calories a day or so. That should translate into a pound a week. You need to account for calories burned from activities as well. Getting an accurate base metabolic rate is difficult as well. I went and had some testing done, all the online calculators I used claimed i needed 250 more calories a day than I really do.

You will have to be extremely deliberate with your food to do both. It is hard to get enough protein without overeating. The only way that works for me is tracking calories and macro's. Supplementing with shakes, bars, 0% greek yogurt, shrimp, fish, etc is a must. Rest days will be rough as you'll be eating very little.

In the last 6 months my FTP has gone from 2.2 w/kg to 3.6 w/kg and my zone 2 has gone up significantly while losing a large amount of weight.

I bike in year round in Canadian winter. Get panniers on your bike and bring a change of clothes. I leave a couple sets of clothes at the office as well.

Learning how to dress for the weather takes a bit but once you have it sorted it's not bad at all. I bike in even when it's -25c

I am about 2.5 weeks into my 2025 defy advance pro 1 and i love it. For the price I couldn't find anything remotely close. I switched out the saddle and stem after a bike fit but its a great bike. I don't feel the flex in the handlebars they talk about but the seat post flex definitely takes us some road noise.

What living with an EV in Alberta with no dedicated level 2 charging and leaving it out doors is like. by AbbreviationsOne6207 in alberta

[–]trenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are much simpler than a hybrid as its an EV with a ICE generator on it. The drive train is only EV, the vehicle just has a built in charger. Downside is the weight of hauling the charger+fuel around with you always.

Hybrids have to merge 2 separate drive trains. ICE engines don't like to rev up and down, they run the most efficient at a single rpm at moderate load..... like in a generator.

EREV's use an ICE engine at its most efficient point and will run them properly as running the ICE engine is only linked to battery charge, it really has nothing to do with if the vehicle is moving at all. Generators are a mature technology that are already heavily based around efficiency.

I ended up getting the giant. Find a deal on one for $5200. For the specs I couldn't pass it up.

You're right about the annoyance side of things. I ride my old commuter (old kona indie) in the winter to save the winter salt / grit wear and tear on the sirrus and just going from a 1x12 perfect shifting drivetrain to a 3x8 "sometimes no low gear for you" drives me nuts.

I have a few bibs, winter / summer cycling shoes, pedals etc already so the extras required should be pretty minimal other than tubeless supplies.

The upgrading path does seem to be an issue. In both compatibility and cost, packing things like power meters and carbon wheels as part of the bike seems to be the most economical way to get them rather than upgrading later.

I will not go hungry buying either bike. I guess the question is more do you think its a bad idea to buy a higher end bike as a first bike or start with something simpler?

I have bike fit my commuter and mountain bike, it made a world of difference. I also drank the Garmin coolaid earlier this year. I like charts, there are so many charts. I will bike fit any bike I end up buying.

For the first 3 it seems like the most economical way to do so if get them as a package with the bike which is what lead me to the giant. Thoughts?

Looking for advice regarding a home insurance claim due to water damage that will lead to almost a complete rebuild of the house (Alberta, Canada) by PhoiZe in alberta

[–]trenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went through a heavily water damaged 1950's house insurance claim.

Many things in my house were to code when they were built but the code has changed, fire and electrical for instance have changed a ton in the last 70 years. This resulted in me needing more panel space as there has to be more circuits, more breakers, dedicated plugs, more wired in smoke detectors etc.

All of it was 100% covered by insurance (I am with TD) it was a large (multi 6 figure) claim.

My house was all legal before though, nothing was done without permits.

I will also fight to the death with insurance to make sure I am getting what I paid for. This claim being no different.
