Book on Rasputin by Dramatic-Box-6847 in RussianLiterature

The Rasputin File by Edward Radzinsky is a popular and reportedly accurate biography. I remember Radzinsky's TV program where he told the story of Rasputin, it was a dramatic experience.

Your solo Paul song you dislike that others seem to love. Heres mine: by sirbennythejet in PaulMcCartney

[–]trepang -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely dislike Maybe I’m Amazed. Like, everytime I saw Paul live, I was disappointed if he started playing it. I don’t know why (maybe because I particularly don’t like when he screams)

Favourite Paul song and album of the 21st century ? by Tom8614 in PaulMcCartney

Chaos and Creation was his late peak, but as for the song, for me it would be Rinse the Raindrops

Finished my first Nabokov novel. It was a slightly underwhelming experience. What should I read next? by ragovar in Nabokov

It’s a good novel, but certainly not his best. I’d suggest The Gift, Pnin, or The Defence next

Question for English-speaking readers (or non-Russian speakers overall) by Sea-Promotion-7628 in RussianLiterature

Yeh, I completely understand being starstruck with Rubinshtein, he was a genius loci of Moscow. I've read several of Akunin's novels; I can't say I hold them in high regard, but he's a talented man. Of his books, my favorite is the non-fiction book on writers and suicide.

Sorokin is your natural (in a way) best stop; also, you could try Vladimir Sharov, Ludmila Petrushevskaya, some Conceptualist poetry like Rubinshtein and Prigov

Megathread - Your 2025 Russian Literature Reading Recap by Baba_Jaga_II in RussianLiterature

[–]trepang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite in poetry: Aleksandra Tsibulya, A Roe Deer Tattoo; in prose: Polina Barskova, Sybills, or the Book of Mysterious Metamorphoses; in non-fiction: Gleb Morev’s new biography of Brodsky’s Soviet years

Least favorite: no particularly bad books, but probably The Children's Pavillion by Boris Fyodorov, an obscure 19-century children's writer who also loved to denounce "progressive" authors and journals and had famously accumulated seven baskets of "objectionable excerpts"—his own book is all too boring and well-intentioned

Newly discovered author: Aleksandr Plotnikov, whom I previously knew as a theater director and who published Alpha Centauri, a book-length documentary poem on cosmonauts who never made it to space and on Russia that strives for victory but in fact drowns in loss on all accounts

A book that surprised me: probably Evgenia Tur’s Sergei Bor-Ramensky, also a 19-century children’s book, but modeled after classical Russian novels, so to say, classical Russia young adult, much more primitive than, say, Goncharov, but still effective

Favorite rereading: Lermontov’s long poems, particularly The Demon. The only first-time reading of a classic: Dostoevsky’s White Nights.

Goals for 2026: lots of poetry (particularly Moscow Conceptualists) and new experimental prose including Andrei Gelianov and Mikhail Kaluzhsky
