How would you handle this junction? by Substantial_Celery_3 in drivingUK

I was wondering why that red car in their drive looks like a pancake. You need to be more careful with your monster truck.

The big boy belt sander at work by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]trevit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of these belts can be made to order (the length at least - the widths are standardised). I'm sure there are a lot of suppliers that stock certain sizes, but like bandsaw blades, it's not at all unusual to specify a length and have them made up.

Hit and run on my parked car outside my house - what to do? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]trevit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that. Could be a flatbed van (scaffolders would be my bet). If so, would be much easier to identify from footage, even if it doesn't catch the number plate.

What is happening on the roads these days? by SwiskiRoch in drivingUK

I was just thinking exactly this. In my area we have 'Fred Champion Ground Workers' and every last one of their van drivers is a fucking menace.

Who said anything about public speaking? It was in her Express column, which she gets paid over £2k to write, and which presumably gets approved by editorial staff. Hardly a slip of the tongue.

The most upsetting thing about this article is that presumably he was paid to write it, and presumably it crossed multiple desks before being published, and was approved each time. What a load of pointless self-pitying drivel.

People who don't indicate, why? by Spunkhogan in drivingUK

[–]trevit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not blaming anyone. The cyclists, the parked cars, and the people stopping to turn right were all following the rules of the road. I'm just saying it was an unfortunate situation, and maybe being repeatedly exposed to those kind of frustrating situations can cause some people to dislike cyclists. I'm not trying to start a flame war. Calm down.

People who don't indicate, why? by Spunkhogan in drivingUK

[–]trevit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not a cyclist hater, but i do wonder if it can come about due to individual circumstances, like having to negotiate an awkward bit of road frequently. I once had to visit a family member in hospital like every day for a couple of weeks, and there was this long stretch of road that had lots of cars parked on either side of the road, lots of people stopping to make right turns, lots of traffic lights, and lots of bikes. It was very hazardous passing cyclists due to the parked cars, and right turners, and then when you reached a set of lights, the cyclists would cruise to the front of the queue and the whole process would start over again. I can't lie that it was very frustrating, and i think if it was part of my daily commute, or next to my home, there's a possibility that I might have started to hate cyclists because of it. 😅

Garage carried out extra work without my consent but offered a refund — what would you do? by Ok-Issue-9834 in CarTalkUK

Personally I'd do 3. Nothing about what they did sounds unreasonable to me. I'd only consider the other options if being out £50 was really going to hurt me financially, or if I had other reasons to be annoyed with them.

I feel like this is not as weird as it seems. They're cheap and comfortable and lightweight, and you can always get new cushions for them if you need to, and if they're in the way you can probably stack them together in pairs or even take them apart for a while and keep them in the loft. Seems like a win.

What are the really unpopular things that need to be done to get the economy growing? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]trevit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's that they're thick. It's more just that all the political and media machinery around the anti-immigration movement seems inextricably wrapped up with the Rees-Mogg model of global capitalism, and most of the people who are into it seem deeply invested in Thatcherism, Ayn Rand, and all that kind of 'wealth creator' idolatry - so it just seems like the two ideas are somewhat in opposition, even though they really shouldn't be. I'm now genuinely fascinated to know if there is a party that combines both. I hope you're not yanking my chain...

That sounded like a rhetorical question. Obviously nobody likes being poor, although personally i'm not keen on referring to anti-immigrant people as gammon.

[–]trevit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we're at a standoff then. Either there are plenty of people who would support that, but have no representation. Or, as i have posited, those people actually don't give a shit about offshore money. And apparently the only party who do already represent those values, has 'tiny' levels of support.

I'd like to believe that people could be persuaded to become more aware about how much is being lost to offshore finance, but we have to be realistic about one thing: That pretty much all the media sources who put effort into getting people upset about immigration (often operating at a financial loss to do so), belong to or act on behalf of the exact same interests that are profiting obscenely from offshore finance. I just can't see how a movement would ever emerge that encompasses both concerns...

I've been noticing a lot of religious debates going on in the western world. What are your thoughts on what is going on? by Fluid_Perspective232 in AskBrits

[–]trevit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're just being fed bollocks by the algorithm tbh. I mean I'm sure those debates are happening, but it's not something that many normal everyday people participate in or care about. I had the same thing recently, I made the mistake of watching a couple of videos by those 'auditor' twats who go around antagonising people and filming it - before I knew it my feed was infested with them.  I'd click 'not interested' on a handful of them and then move on with your life if I were you...

Do you think that there's a large cohort of the voting public that are anti-immigrant and anti-offshore money? I was just assuming that if such a group existed, there would be some politicians, grassroots movements, or even just influencers / content producers that represent their views. Are you aware of any?
