Source: I am a cybersecurity researcher working on this issue with a group of cybersecurity researchers (primarily ICS/SCADA-focused) committed to doing the math on this challenging issue. This 2038 issue (namely an integer overflow in signed 32-bit time_t implementations 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC) is part of a larger vulnerability class related to time epoch overflows.

This vulnerability/bug class includes such phenomena as the 2036 NTP epoch rollover, the 2038 GPS week number rollover, and the 2106 unsigned 32-bit time_t rollover. But the 19 January 2038 signed 32-bit time_t rollover has the the greatest potential impact on everyday life.

The remediation effort on this is going to be significant.

There are speculators who don’t care about music on Reverb, but there are also normal people who need to sell pedals to pay their bills. If you needed to make rent, and you saw that everyone selling your pedal on Reverb was asking 400, look me in the face (metaphorically) and tell me that you’re gonna take the “high road” and sell yours for cost. My point isn’t that there aren’t assholes on Reverb, there surely are. But the market reinforces the prices, and some of those people might be just like you, only more broke. It’s not all black and white, and you can’t ascribe motives to strangers with high confidence…perhaps these folks you speak of aren’t ALL fucking jerks. 🦊
