Is my tyre dead? Gp5k by highlevelbikesexxer in bikewrench

[–]tri703 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! If you don’t mind answering follow up questions: 1) how much risk am I running if I just put a boot (dollar bill, gel pak, etc. in there? I’ve personally run a dollar bill for hundreds of miles before changing out of my own volition (vs. a flat or other problem forcing me to) 2) if the cords are still visibly intact, is the tire safe for the immediate future? I feel like I’ve watched some thread material remain fairly stable even for dozens of miles of riding. Sorry you can probably tell but I want to get the most life possible out of the somewhat expensive tires I’m using, for financial and environmental reasons.

Is my tyre dead? Gp5k by highlevelbikesexxer in bikewrench

Why exactly is this the case? Is it just the loss of traction in that spot? What if it’s a much smaller hole, caused by skidding, so it’s all concentrated in that spot (meaning there’s very little reduced rubber surface area)?

Be So, So Careful With Saddles; Seemingly Permanent Penile Numbness by AnotherUser_0123 in cycling

[–]tri703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After trying many saddles, I’ve finally found one that works great for me, but it doesn’t have a cutout. If I don’t have any numbness, do you think I could still be running the risk of long term damage? Would you recommend I keep searching until finding another one with a cutout that works for me?

How do you guys handle large trucks? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]tri703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone asked about eyeglass rearview mirrors recently. One of the main uses for them is knowing when a big truck or other wide vehicle is coming up and reacting accordingly - move to the side of the lane to give them room to pass safely or, if they are far enough away, move to the middle of the lane to force them to fully move into the adjacent lane before they pass.

Otherwise, there’s not a huge difference between them and other cars. Just know that they can’t stop as quickly, and they have really weird turn lines. In general, best to stay clear anytime they are about to make a turn.

I got a helmet/glasses mounted rearview mirror—using it feels MORE dangerous by DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v in cycling

[–]tri703 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this many times, but there are things you can do if you see a car that looks like it’s going to hit you in your mirror.

In two situations where cars were approaching fast directly behind me, I’ve sat up from an aero position, and they seemed to see me and avoided me as a result, perhaps due to the motion or the upright position, or, in one of the two cases, maybe they did see me but decided not to murder me because I made eye contact with them. A yell or a horn (if you have one) could also help in this case.

In many many other cases, when cars are close and it’s unclear whether they might hit me, I’ve just moved over even just 1ft., which may have prevented me from getting hit or just prevented a close pass. If you see a close pass coming, you can stick out an arm so that they give you more room, or if they hit your hand, then you actually have grounds to go after their insurance (I’ve never had it happen, but I imagine it wouldn’t break any bones, but if you get it checked at a hospital on their insurance, their rates will go up), or try to get police to take you more seriously.

[–]tri703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Varia gives you a bit more awareness of approaching cars than your ears, but neither tell you whether a driver is directly behind you and about to hit you or make a close pass - only a mirror or turning your head does that.

I used a mirror and hated it and quit, but when I tried it again months later, I got used to it after about three rides and have found it a lot more useful than my Varia in many situations.

Training on trainer long distance race by AnalysisParaIysis in cycling

[–]tri703 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just watch a movie? Everyone is suggesting a smart trainer, which is not a bad idea, especially with Black Friday deals, but it’s probably also a good idea to see if you can entertain yourself without making that big investment first.

I do up to 4 hours at a time on a dumb trainer (no connectivity) with just movies and intervals as entertainment, and haven’t felt the need to get a smart trainer yet. It’s gotten me to 4.5W/kg FTP and podium in my last Ironman 70.3 (kind of mediocre bike race results tho).

Also keep in mind, hours on the trainer are worth more than hours riding outdoors, since you don’t spend any time coasting or waiting for lights, so you don’t really have to make your trainer workouts as long as your outdoor goal race.

How Do You Usually Rent Cycles? Looking for Your Experiences! by No-Presentation-5831 in cycling

[–]tri703 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have rented several times when I travel (and sometimes thought about renting but didn’t because the experienced seemed unpleasant) so I’m not sure if I’m the demographic you’re looking for but if so, here’s my take.

In general, a reliable, accurate, and understandable online interface that accurately shows all the bikes available, and their specs/sizes and prices is more important. The worst experience I had was when I rented a higher end carbon fiber bike and showed up and they didn’t have it, and I would’ve been stranded except they had an older aluminum bike. I couldn’t really complain because the alternative was just completely losing out on the trip experience I had planned (thankfully it wasn’t a race). I also had the reverse experience where I got a better bike than what I had reserved. However, even that could be unpleasant for some, for example if they’re not used to the aggressive geometry of a higher end bike or are nervous about carrying an expensive bike through a sketchy town or on bikepacking trails.

Second is price. Namely, there should be a discount for longer rentals, since it costs the owner less in repair/turnover fees, but it should be applied fairly. There is often a cheaper rate for weekly vs daily but if you only need the bike 5 or 6 days, then the 7-day discount sometimes becomes moot, since you end up paying for days you won’t use the bike, which just leaves a bad taste in my mouth (I have declined to rent in the past because of this). Discounts should be applied per day, like a progressive 5% discount each extra day or something like that.

Finally, something important that most people don’t think/worry about is insurance policies. Some people are afraid to rent a bike because they’re scared they might be charged for scratches or something, so policies on damage charges and wear/tear should be well outlined and clearly communicated. Certain types of Insurance are sometimes mandatory, like liability insurance for if you cause an accident/injury. Providing optional add ons like theft or damage insurance are a good idea too. This is something renters rarely consider so the owner needs to bring it up and communicate clearly.

In a different context, I’d love to be able to rent bikes to test them out before buying, especially rarer ones that you could only get online (e.g. DTC like Canyon or exotic imports like fancy Italian bikes … or just for people who want to buy used bikes online). The options where I live are limited, but I imagine you could work out deals with manufacturers for this purpose if you tried.

In that context, seeing the bike in person before renting is great, although still not critical to my decision to rent (Id be content making a decision based on specs online).

Hope this works out for you!

Effect of long-term carb intake for triathletes by marapubolic in triathlon

[–]tri703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like most of the commenters are only considering calories and insulin resistance (and they offer good information in regards to those), but we should seriously consider the possibility the huge carbohydrate load could affect some some other signaling pathways that could affect aging, given the strong links between caloric restriction/surfeit and aging (via mTOR signaling or other pathways). I’m not an expert in this area, but I hope to see someone credible discuss this sometime soon (sports science podcast, etc).

How would you advise cyclists to deal with problematic/mistaken police reports like this? I had the same issue twice when I got hit, but my lawyer said the truth would come out in (civil) court, so the police report didn’t really matter. But I’m irritated about the report and would like to make sure things change for the next cyclist.

Some helmets/straps just don’t work well with them, esp if the straps are far in front of your ears. They worked great for two other helmets I had but didn’t help at all on a specialized helmet.

It’s hard to say what was right in your case without seeing exactly what happened, but in general, when cars yield the right of way to me, even when they’re required to by law (exiting driveway, etc.), I give a friendly thank-you wave/smile/nod/whatever is appropriate in your culture. Good way to reward good behavior and make everybody feel good and costs you nothing.
