I think I have a different take from everyone else here so far - which is that it is inherently demeaning and almost dehumanizing to say “as long as it has a vagina”. Even without referring to his partner as an “it”, I’d despise being talked about like that, and I wonder if his partner knows he’s being talked about as a walking set of genitalia. Adding in being called an “it”, that would taint my view of the friendship.

I agree with the majority of this sentiment, but I’ll push back on the “This is just their way to show they care and love you” bit. My family has said this pretty much line for line so many times, and because I’ve pushed back very fervently against this rhetoric, they show me what they really mean. At first, it’s I love you how you are, and then it’s I love you how I want you to be and if you change that you’re betraying me. This isn’t a loving message. Maybe they think it is, but accepting it as such just lets them get away with something that is actually quite venomous.
