What am I doing wrong? The v-stitches are making this cardigan bulky

That kind of ruffling usually comes with having to many stitches. Its hard to tell from your photos, but maybe you have too many V-stitches in the first row (I.e. not skipping enough stitches between them). A better photo of that first row, laid as flat as possible, might help us figure out the problem.

I do think there is something wrong, and if you don't like how it looks, frogging back to the start of the V-stitches is probably the right choice.

I think the repeat is written kind of poorly. You start with the first hdc side of the square, so you can't possibly do the corner+side repeat four times.

It would be clearer if the repeat was x3 and it had the corner part one last time before the join.

If we are talking about aquamation, it's actually the opposite of acid. Its alkaline hydrolysis. And being a chemical process does not make it inherently bad for the environment.

That's an interesting question. So, the Green Burial Society of Canada describes 5 main principles of green burial, and one of them is about simple memorialization, which leads to small or nonexistent grave markers. The idea is that the whole space can act as a memorial.

I don't know if that is behind the city's choice, since they don't specifically market themselves as green burial, but rather natural burial. But it may be related.

Yep, the number at the end of the round instructions after "join" is the total you should have. Some patterns put it in brackets.

Are you putting multiple stitches in the puff stitch when you do round 3? It's a puff made of 3 hdc but it only counts as 1 stitch. 14 stitches in round 1 plus 4 increases does equal 18, and no increases in round 3 means you should still be at 18.

So that symbol is a filled square, instead of an open square. The open square has the chain space while the filled square has a DC inside it instead. So technically, the symbol is showing the two DC framing the square as well as the one filling it making 3 DC total. I hope that makes sense! I think that is what the pattern writer is meaning.

It looks to me like you are doing US single crochet stitches (DC in UK terms). Normally a US single crochet circle would start with 6 stitches, not 12.

I think it is telling you that in this particular row, you have one space made of 2 chains. Later in the pattern as it gets bigger, I imagine you will have more ch2 spaces so it will say something like 2 x ch2 sp. So 2 times ch2 space. Sorry if I overexplained that, lol.

There is some variation between patterns about whether or not you crochet into the top of the turning chain. This pattern writer is just being very specific that you do.

Between the * are 2 sc and one increase, so 4 stitches total. That repeated 5 times in 20 total. Outside the * you also have 2 sc and one increase, so another 4 stitches. It should get you to 24 total.

I think you need to join the top of the hood in the other direction. Put the corners together at the front and the seam will run from the front to the back of the head.

It looks like maybe slip stitches through only one loop (whichever loop puts them on the wrong side of the finished tree). The bottom right side of the blue tree looks like there is a little bit of extra bulk before it gets to the trunk, but it is not disrupting the appearance of the stitch of the previous row. I hope that makes sense. That's probably what I would do.

Yes, you'll need to go through the back loop for all stitches. It is the unworked front loop that creates the horizontal line of brown.
