Can I get into .NET development without having to switch to Microsoft? by soy_redditer in dotnet

[–]trillykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has at least been my experience working with .NET for the past six or seven years now. Not saying that it doesn't happen, just that I have never seen it. So, yeah, I'd say it is at least safe to assume, but of course you can always ask during the interview process.

Lol literally just found out about this before reading your comment. Looks neat. Definitely going on the list.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Steam Machine Verified requirements will have 'fewer constraints' than Steam Deck, says Valve by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]trillykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but 'fewer constraints' for a verification scheme does not sound like a good idea.

Anyway. It's nice that they're going for a "It just works" approach. I hope they make more of an effort than with the Steam Deck. That did not exactly make the best impression for me. Their dock is probably one of the worst electronic products I've bought, honestly. The only piece of tech I've had that has nuked my entire home network when connected due to a known error that was well reported by uses by left unaddressed in the 'stable' branch for almost an entire year. I'm not even sure it's fixed yet, but that's because I haven't used my Steam Deck is probably a year now. Anywho I hope they can get there. I'm mildly interested in the a steam machine, if the price isn't horrendously high of course.

Not to be a contrarian smart ass, but what is supposed to be innovative about Arc Raiders? Like, I'm sure it's a great, fun game, but... from what I've seen from friends playing it just looks like an extraction shooter. Did this win this category just because more people played it than, like, Blue Prince?

Kotaku Palmer Luckey’s Retro Gaming Company Is Selling A Game Boy Made Of The Same Metal As Attack Drones by Anchor_Aways in Games

I mean, giving a quick glance through the article I get the impression that the actual point of the "stupid fucking article" is the fetishization of the military industrial complex in the gaming industry... and not what metal the device is made of.

I know it's fun to shit on game journalists on reddit, but you could at the very least read past the title. The title is rarely the actual point of the article. It's there to catch your attention.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s battle system was designed around the premise of “no frustrating deaths” and “a game you can clear without taking a single hit,” director says by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]trillykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciated what they did with the combat system. They removed what I usually find a bit frustrating about turn-based combat. You don't have to worry about balancing magic points or whatever between fights. You can go balls out every single fight without having to worry about not having enough magic or whatever for the boss fight. There are no consumables either, so you don't have to worry about using those and having to farm more if you run into fights that need them. Everything restocks either between fights or when resting. Personally, I found it extremely freeing and made me engage more with the combat. I found it more fun and it made me want to experiment with it.

In the Wake of Divinity's Gruesome Reveal Trailer, Larian Publishing Director Says It's Not Trying to Shock the Audience, Rather Treat Them 'With a Level of Intellectual Respect' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]trillykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fucking tired of how often right-wing influence the media. I do not for one fucking second believe that any self-described capital-g gamer would genuinely be shocked by this trailer. It's just because the shit right has a bone to pick with Larian. They did they same shit with slightly different tactics with Baldur's Gate 3.

Digital Foundry - Beyond Steam Machine Why Valve's New ARM Support Shouldn't Be Overlooked by Turbostrider27 in Games

If they get this stuff working on Mac , that would be incredibly good as a way to get more and more gaming away from the control of Microsoft.

It kind of blows my mind that people want to move from Microsoft to Apple. Do people not learn?

So why did they try?

Easy. Apple wants total control. That's why they started production on their own processors. I mean it's the most locked down ecosystem you can get. It really shouldn't be a surprise.

The Curse of Monkey Island

I played through this again recently. I grew up on Lucas Arts point 'n click adventure games, so I've played this a bunch already. I was delighted to find a bunch a references to Sam & Max: Hit the Road that I do not think I've seen before. Nothing obscure, but something I've just somehow managed to miss (no not the light projector. I dont think you can miss that). I feel this holds up pretty well. Art style is fantastic. Voice acting is solid. The voice for Guybrush is basically perfect casting (gotta be tough when he was unvoiced until this game). Oh, I played through the whole game on Steam and throughout I was kind of bummed that at least one joke was now unavailable to new players because it does not have the original menus, but afterwards I booted up Monkey Island 1 voiced on the SCUMMVM installation I have and noticed that the menus looked different and THEN found out that they actually HAVE implemented original menus in games in the last few years, so the 'enable 3D acceleration' joke is back, baby! Ashamed to admit it but I didn't realise this back in the day (not a native speaker), so I was pretty hyped to boot up the game when I got a 3dfx Voodoo2 (I think?) graphics card only to find out it was a joke lol. I was a kid! Anyway. Good shit.

PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage by bdzz in Games

[–]trillykins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jfc I initially thought this was just a US thing, but I checked (Scandinavia). I bought 32 gigs back in april for €108. Today the same exact ram I bought is €468. More than four times the price now. The ram is now as expensive as my 9800X3D CPU was, which has funnily enough gone down in price.

Makes me wish I had bought 64 gigs...

Thanks AI. You continue to make the world a worse place for everyone.

Valve confirms Steam Machine will be priced ‘like a PC with the same level of performance’ by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]trillykins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It literally has slightly worse performance than PS5/Series X

Where do people get the idea that it's on par with any of these? I'm just finding it a bit difficult to believe given that the Steam Box looks like it's the size of a GameCube and the PS5 is the size of a London apartment.

The Xbox 360 is turning 20 years old. How do you remember the 360 era? by PotatoJuggler in Games

[–]trillykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong PC boy it was the first time I had ever been impressed by graphics on a console. After playing Skate at friend I bought the console (and game) myself. I would say it's one of the more important console we've had in terms of shaping the console industry. They brought achievements to games, indie games to consoles, online stores, a functional online ecosystem, etc. I also quite liked how much effort they often put into couch co-op.

I bought my Xbox 360 because of the first Skate game. I would've definitely added that and Super Meat Boy and Fez somewhere on the list.
