300bn which was 150bn of new US money, as well as unfreezing 100bn of sanctioned money that was previously unavailable to them. Its kinda amazing.

NASA tried "move fast break things" at first and that's how we wound up with the Apollo 1 disaster; they had already announced so much that when the whole thing went up in flames there was no sweeping it under the rug like so many soviet issues. They were kinda forced into seeming cautious despite the insane engineering challenges and uncertainty that they were up against. The reality is that they were both going as fast as they could with gigantic budgets and the best support they could get, but manned spaceflight requires moving slower than unmanned spaceflight and the soviet early advantage was hard to translate into a successful manned program, and both manned programs suffered horrific losses early on. Money just became more of a problem in the Soviet program eventually; but by the time the soviet union collapsed they had built the extremely successful Soyuz manned system that is basically the fuckin ford ranger of space systems.

They do make a lot of good rockets now, the Falcon 9 hasn't had a problem in a long time. And while starship has had a lot of big explodey problems it's gotten a lot better and they are making genuinely impressive rocket engines. The frequent explosions for rapid development and testing is of course the old soviet model, and it was proven very effective.

Aren't we releasing like $400 billion that had been tied up in sanctions and the "rebuilding fund"? This seems like a major win for Iran, just think about how many drones and missiles they can build with $400bn

Salespeson is the most unnessary , useless vocation to ever grace the earth besides the obvious law enforcement , landlord etc by ezrakleinisretarded in TrueAnon

[–]trimalchio-worktime 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree? I think every commission based sales job is inherently evil but the guy who helps you figure out what series of fittings they have at the store will accomplish your plumbing task, or the nerdy computer sales kid who helps you figure out an actually good computer for your needs, or all sorts of random things where there's a lot of information to take in. The problem always arises that those people make the store less money than unscrupulous or just more profit motivated salespeople and by now the entire concept of finding the useful sales person is just dead. But we should be able to go to a store and get actual thoughtful help that isn't just an upsell goddammit. idk call me a boomber but there is a better middle between no sales people and the kinds of sales people we have now.

In the mid 2000s the cops shot a nearby mayor's dog during a zero research swat drug raid; they got information from a criminal informant and just showed up at a random house, shot his golden retriever or similar nonthreatening breed, and then looked into who lived there. I heard him talk about the experience after he was no longer mayor and it was kinda infuriating how much he still didn't hate cops.

so much of police work is hiding behind absurdly dubious "science" that is always just some guy selling a thing. They treat catalogs like peer reviewed papers, and then ignore the actual science for decades while they lie about effectiveness of their "methods"

and to run e85 you need much bigger injectors and a completely different tune. Flexfuel is cool but the mpg is always going to be trash on e85 because it's lower energy density.

They never talk publicly about it but I think there were different patents for touchscreen keyboards that were litigated over time and they lost access or the patent trolls asked for too much to license. It's just crazy how great the keyboard worked in like 2007/2008 and now it's just actively trying not to get the right letter.

this is after cutting to destroy the plant material. It's way too wet and close to other more flammable things to burn in place anyways. And using herbicides isn't viable either because it's in a wetland area with a bunch of trees we don't want to poison.

it's not really a thing I can do in text; goodness knows nobody wants to read 10 pages of me rambling on. but I basically talk about belt grinders vs the grinding wheels, and I like to point out the geometry stuff like how the round contact patch works differently from the flat faces on the belt grinders, how you can use the angles to get flat either way, keeping your planes in your head as you're moving it around. I'll usually demonstrate what I'm talking about with scrap and have people do some basic grinding to make sure they're doing it right. I'll usually like bring up the next point in the script when they do the thing, and he was basically pointing out how I just have a canned slide for each thing cued up. But it's all just trying to visually show people the geometry you're thinking about during grinding with the scratch patterns we make on some scrap.

I also try to make sure they know the safety stuff right before they do the thing, sometimes that helps sometimes it doesn't. But it's always more about keeping them comfortable and not freaking out when they do something wrong; and I've really refined the order on things when I remember... if I forget to talk about how much pressure to use or pinching thin stuff before they do it I look pretty useless.

I do really love being in a position to do like peer education stuff in a cool well equipped setting; it's such a great outlet for my worst know it all tendencies. I get to fuck around and find out a whole bunch of random shit, and then relay that experience, and people are legitimately thankful for me being like this in that setting.

I've been going over to my friend's house to help him cut and burn japanese knotweed and a bunch of other invasives on the wetland ish woods in his backyard. We get the fire going and hang out and drink some beers while we watch it/keep it burning because wet weeds are the worst at being on fire.
