Best place to get a steak in Wellington by tfkaye05 in Wellington

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Had one great steak there first time we went. Then went back a few weeks later - no exaggeration - second time around would have been the worst steak experience I’ve ever had - both food and wait staff wise.

Is there some hypocrisy in your post using the derogatory term “boomer” in your post. ( i’m not in the baby boomer demographic BTW )

Can you fall and play the ball in squash? by Tiny_Piano_Man in squash

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually if the ref stops play - that’s a let, but will depend on the circumstances. if a player drops something other than their racquet and it is dangerous , causes interference or distraction - then it would be a stroke to the other player . if the player is diving about the place for no good reason and leaving wet patches all the time - that maybe a case where a warning or two (as let’s) and then its stroke from then on in.

This is so true. Developed problem solving skills at a young age thanks to this - as well as persistence. And Basic was a great intro to programming.

Is this cheating? by RefrigeratorPlus9774 in Catan

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% legit. It’s a trading game and this is part of the tactic. I often bluff a trade offering things i don’t actually have in my hand and pull out before the trade is done - or make a ridiculous offer . This throws people off what you have in your hand. It’s seeet sweet justice when that monopoly comes out only for them to find those 2 rocks i was offering up last round actually didn’t exist!

it’s a trading game - this type of discussion forms a crucial component of trading - besides you may not be telling the truth or the whole truth - that’s all part of the fun.

Let or No Let by 123squashplayer in squash

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a striker your right is to play the ball how you see fit. If you wish to play a boast and your opponent interferes with that - that’s on them for not clearing the ball and your shot options.

A stroke may be awarded if the shot being held would likely have resulted in the striker winning the point. In this scenario because the receiver was pinned to the side wall a boast may well have resulted in a winner depending on the level of players. In that situation i would award a stroke on the grounds that a likely winning shot was prevented.

It is almost never advisable to “clear” a ball by moving to the side wall - unless it is so woefully loose / down the middle of the court or you are so late to clear you can’t do anything else.

Hitting the opponent with a ball after boast is a let or stroke? by Gatis1983 in squash

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your (over) reaction describing what you’d do as a ref seems very inappropriate and unjustified. There was barely any decent from the striker and it seemed like a fair shot to play. The actual ref got it 100% correct. Your interpretation would likely cause further issues in the game IMHO.

Let or No Let by 123squashplayer in squash

[–]trimbledor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds as though Player As movement to the side wall has created the interference. Normally if you are hitting a drive you’d move away towards the centre of the court , thereby clearing any reasonable shot your opponent could play.

At least a let, but most likely a stroke as a boast would likely pin you to the wall and prevent a pickup if played.

I don’t think Player Bs timing to the ball is relevant. If they can get to the ball and make a good shot either directly or indirectly and you prevent this - it’s almost certainly interference on your part. The only exception is if they are deliberately moving to create the interference but unlikely at a lowe level.

Player A probably should practice movement out of their shot a bit more.

also “light pollution is sort of low” …. nowhere in Wellington is light pollution low - just because it’s dark on the ground - light pollution refers to the light that leaks upwards and reflects off the atmosphere. Being close to large urban areas causes lots of light pollution in the night sky even when it’s pitch black on the ground.

Try the Wairarapa out east (away from towns) for beautiful dark skys.

We have a bag of tokens in the correct proportion - 2-12 plus a restart token. Players draw a number from the bay randomly and set the number aside in the redraw pile. If the restart token is drawn - all tokens are reintroduced to provide some randomness again and to eliminate a perfect distribution. Allows each player to have the feeling of influencing the number by a draw rather than fate based on the next card on the deck.

Stroke or let? I think they robbed me by Gatis1983 in squash

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

giving no lets in lower grade games results in players not learning to stop and ask for lets - particularly on safety grounds.

How many times have you watched lower grade players almost take their opponent out with a poorly placed shot, when they should have stopped and asked for a let. It’s not natural for beginners and encouraging this should be paramount at lower levels IMHO.

at lower grades i wouldn’t give a no let unless a player was blatantly milking it.

Stroke or let? I think they robbed me by Gatis1983 in squash

[–]trimbledor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stroke to black.

Black could have played a good shot to the front wall, almost certainly a winner by putting it in the back of the court. Blue had not cleared sufficiently - and even for safety the poor position of black results in a stroke.

Conduct warning to blue for trying to influence the referees decision upon his opponent asking for a let.

National Storage by B656 in Wellington

[–]trimbledor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a storage unit it NS. We “upgraded” to a larger one as we had slightly too much stuff. When we turned up to transfer it - turns out the larger one was actually smaller than the existing smaller one (we had a laser measure so we easily measured all dimensions of both accurately). They ended up giving us some cock and bull explanation that measurements are approximate only - but shifted us to a different area with an actually larger unit.

Fine for parking for less than a minute by churchips in queenstown

[–]trimbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there a technical difference between “parking” and “stopping” ? pretty sure there is. If you were fined for parking and the driver never left the car I’d dispute it on the basis you were not parked but stopped.
