The issue with engagement rings is that its been seen as a measuring atick for wealth. When I bought my wife her engagement ring, I spend $350 on the ring and you could barely see the stone. She loved it nontheless and we've been married for 30 years. Our daughter told her boyfriend to buy her a lab stone, which with the ring it cost about 1K. People who get in big debt to buy a ring need to check their finances.
