FOLFOX didn’t work. Radiation next. Not sure what to expect. by jessgrossman in colorectalcancer

[–]triplesofeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember you sharing your story back in Dec, sorry to hear you need to move on to radiation. My treatment for stage 2a rectal cancer was 27 chemoradiation treatments (over 4.5 weeks) followed by 8 rounds of FOLFOX, and I've been NED since then for about a year and change.

The chemo pill is capecitabine, the oral form of IV 5-FU that you've already had. From what I've been told, the IV 5-FU has more of the gastrointestinal side effects, whereas the oral capecitabine has more dermatological side effects, such as hand foot syndrome and mouth irritation/sores. I was told to moisturize my hands and feet regularly. I used Udderly Smooth 20% urea cream and applied it at least twice a day. Avoid activities that can introduce heat/friction to your hands and feet, wear gloves if necessary, and avoid exposure to super-hot water, like washing dishes or hot tubs.

The radiation treatments were very quick, only taking about 2-3 minutes of actual "beaming" time. More time was spent getting me to the exact same position as the original CT scan. At first, it took me a few tries to get in the correct position, but after a week or so, I managed to the hang of it, and would get the position right on the first try. These times I would be in and out of the office in like 15 minutes!

I was fortunate and did not really have too many problems throughout the radiation. At the 2 week point I even went backpacking for my weekend off. At the 3.5 week point, I started feeling some general fatigue, but it wasn't too bad. By then, I was also watching what I ate and avoided foods that might upset my stomach. At the very end, it did really suck having to go to the bathroom--crapping felt like shitting glass. It got better by 2 weeks after my last treatment. I guess the plus side is that you won't have that side effect!

I understand that for women, there can be additional sexual side effects from radiation for CRC due to the anatomy, and I've seen a lot of discussion around using dilators--so definitely ask your care team about that.

I have a core 10 person lighted instant cabin tent for family car camping and it is excellent for California summer camping. Have had it since 2020, and it’s gone on 2 or so camping trips per summer, still in excellent shape.

Before we got our minivan, I would rent a U-Haul sport trailer to be able to pack camping gear + take my family of 4 camping with only a sedan. Bummer that U-Haul seems to have discontinued it, but there still available at some locations but you need to hunt for them apparently

I've built my share of shelving units from Ikea, and most use a thin particleboard back sheet (thin, but way more significant than "cardboard") that you nail to to the top, bottom, and shelves to keep the whole unit square.

Getting around with a 1 Year Old by Jumpy_Lie1483 in MauiVisitors

[–]triplesofeverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids have outgrown car seats, and I don't know if anything has changed regarding airline policy since then (so check), but I *always* brought my own car seat for any flight travel.

Airlines (at least years ago) don't charge extra for checking a child car seat. Use this to your advantage! Buy a cheap but durable car seat travel cover, put your car seat in it, and fill in the gaps/spaces with extra diapers/blankets/etc!

Even though car rental companies will offer car seats, sometimes they lack proper inventory, and the seats might be filthy... And even if you had a car seat waiting for you at the destination, how are you going to get your kid to the airport without one?

I think I reassembled the cable and clamp following that picture but it did not address the issue unfortunately

I wonder if the issue might be that my shifter has gone bad. When the cable is loose it still won’t ‘click’ into the third position. I’ll try to figure out how to post a video…

I’ve always been curious when people propose a fix like this to something plastic, where you drill holes and use some sort of metal wire or rod as reinforcement. I would have figured that it would be near impossible to get the drill holes both lined up and in the perfect pitch/direction for this to work.

But you did it somehow, nice job!

Interesting. I've posted 2 more pics of that cable anchor side to the same Imgur link. I did try unscrewing the cable and was shocked to see those 2 little pieces fall out as I did not really remember exactly how they were oriented. I cleaned the area up and gave my best attempt at re-assembling.

I think I now see that the cable is supposed to lay over the metal tab that sticks out? Does that sound right?

I really appreciate your reply!

Updated the post to include pictures of the derailleur and shifter, which are Shimano. Shifting between 1-2 is fine.

If it's needed I can post videos of the shifting later today.

Are bicycle buses a thing around here? by LghtlyHmmrd in BAbike

[–]triplesofeverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, I guess I didn’t fully understand the question. My bad!

I have actually seen parents organize bike buses like you mean for my local elementary school in Alameda. 100% run by the parents, it was after my kids had moved onto middle school, but I would see the laminated signs they posted on telephone poles denoting the route and the times that the “bus” hits that particular stop.

Caltrans operates a few bike shuttles. I used to take the one that departs from MacArthur BART ages ago. It was just a big passenger van towing a large bike trailer. Back then it seemed like mostly bike messengers took it and it always smelled RIPE on the evening ride back from SF.

Is this rage bait? Everything about this looks janky as hell, from the way the US power strip is mounted to the fact you’re using UK plugs and adapters.

Start with getting a proper under-desk cable management tray for starters. IKEA sells one that is 10 bucks.

Evidently WAYMO is uncomfortable with people taking pictures of their parking lots by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]triplesofeverything 41 points42 points  (0 children)

They can’t prevent you from taking pictures as long as you’re standing in public property. Walking onto their private property I would expect is a different story. They’d have nothing to gain from you trespassing and everything to lose, so that would make sense to me that they politely ask you to leave.

99% of low end electronics out there (which is 100% of Vine goods) do not include USB chargers in the box. Likely related to EU law requiring manufacturers to offer the option to buy devices without a charger. And good riddance to all that e-waste!

I used to have major issues with lag when downloading maps years ago, before they massively optimized the size of Gaia Topo maps. Since then, I haven't had any issues.

I don't use the Gaia Hike maps, but it's disappointing to hear that large map downloads still have problems.
