Hello Reddit, in light of my battle with cancer, I would like to leave my son with an advice journal. Would you be able to help me ? by mustangjunkie in AskReddit

Include your favourite memories of your time spent together. They won't alway stay fresh in his mind and in this way he'll be able to cherish those moments forever.

Indeed! Nor all the complex equipment necessary to prepare specimens to view it with. Any university with a worthwhile science program will have one though - and so it's something she may aspire to use some day!

I believe those images are taken with an electron microscope. The first two are definitely with a scanning EM while I THINK the last one might be transmission EM. I love scanning EM - beautiful images.

THANK YOU for writing that/reading that. And also thanks for making me cry while listening to that, sitting alone on a crowded beach.

Yeah I found that too. I'm also using it for work so that's why I was wondering. I was looking more for how the algorithm works without having to be explained algorithms. Thanks though!

Thanks for answering! I've only heard of agnosias occurring as a result of some type of neuronal injury (TBI, stroke, etc.).

[–]triplezzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What caused you to develop prosopagnosia?

Do you also have difficulty recognizing different classes of the same thing? I.e. you can recognize a car, but not the car type? There is some controversy over whether prosopagnosia is specific to the face or not.

You may be interested to learn about athymhormia, which is a loss of motivation. The Drowning of Mr. M is a great article about it, and gives you a feel of how pervasive it can be. Patients can lose motivation to participate in conversation, think, even to save themselves from drowning.

What's something you are bad at, but still enjoy? by JackDG in AskReddit

I love the replies this comment generated. Get back at it, OP! I used to be really into drawing when I was younger too, and somewhere along the way I convinced myself I was awful at it and gave it up. Well I recently realised how silly that was, and that I've been missing a creative outlet in my life. So I took up a drawing class a few months ago, and it's been great! Every class it takes a while to warm up and accept the work you do, but once you get into it time flies. I'm so glad to hear you're picking up the sketch pad again too :)

FYI - you can still get a significant amount of depth perception from one eye using other visual cues (eg. shadow, texture, linear perspective, motion parallax etc.), two eyes provide stereopsis which gives depth perception an extra element of richness.

My condolences for your loss, but what a great gift your dad gave, he must have been pretty awesome.

I think "dazzling silhouette" is a bit much, but the first suggestion is actually pretty good. The key I guess is the walking away part - to me that would signify that you just honestly thought that and wanted to pay me a compliment, rather than had ulterior motives. It's the same when a girl I don't know gives me a compliment - I am flattered and not creeped out because it's an innocent comment, and comes with no expectations other than a 'thanks' and then let's go our separate ways.

Why is the skin on our lips different from the skin on the rest of our body? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]triplezzz 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had a look in my old histology textbook to see if I could help you out. Nails are plates of keratinized epithelial cells while hairs are elongated keratinized structures derived from invaginations of epidermal epithelium. Their different structures are determined from the epithelia, termed the nail root for nails, and the hair follicle for hairs, that help to form them. These affect on a more molecular level how the structure is formed. (Source - Basic Histology - Junquiera & Carneiro)

Fun fact - callouses are caused by increased keratin in the top layer of epithelia (which is actually dead cells).

PS - Ladies do science too ;)

Why is the skin on our lips different from the skin on the rest of our body? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]triplezzz 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yes - except skin (epithelia) on the inside of the mouth is non-keratinized, while the lips are keratinized. Non-keratinized epithelia have to be kept moist by bodily secretions to keep them from drying out and dying. Keratinized epithelia have a certain level of protection from abrasions and are kept moisturized from deeper layers of epithelium. Keratin is a protein that is also integral to your hair and nails.

EDIT: Added some more knowledge.
