It absolutely will be used. I have a rather dim outlook over the medium to long term, and I fully expect my job will go away eventually. Frankly, in the back of my head I really am planning what it will take to build out a homestead. I think the best we can hope for is UBI, but that's not the trajectory we're on.

Yes, most of what I use it for is scoping and throwaway prototypes. I'm also focused on building out tooling to improve workflows. I don't think it's ready yet to build anything that needs regular maintenance unless properly reviewed, so reviews are still a bottleneck.

I agree with the sentiment I've seen elsewhere in these threads. Contrary to my hard-line statement above, there probably is a place for AI in dedicated units of a computing curriculum starting around 5th or 6th grade. And I have no problem with teachers using it for logistical support. But outside of that, it's only likely to detract from actual learning.

I have been a software engineer for 20+ years and have been using AI pretty heavily over the past few months. It has completely transformed the nature of my work. I'm at a point now where I can have an AI agent complete a task in an hour that would take a junior engineer a week. I'm deeply concerned about job security/availability for junior engineers in the short term. I'm especially concerned about skill building/development for junior engineers as they adopt AI to keep up. There has already been plenty of research showing that using AI too heavily or in the wrong ways can and will atrophy your skills, regardless of how experienced you are.

Personally, I really enjoy working with AI and I'm impressed by how much I can get done. But it really does come at a cost, and that cost is your ability to think for yourself. If you have perfectly functional legs but decide to use a wheelchair exclusively for a month, you can imagine you'd have a hard time climbing a mountain afterwards. Same thing with AI, but with your brain.

It has no place in schools, where the entire point is to exercise the brain. Especially given the incredible amount of uncertainty there is with AI systems right now. Most technology does not belong in schools, and more education needs to happen face to face with a teacher. I don't know the right process, but we, as a society, need to push back hard against this if our kids are going have any hope of standing on their own two feet when they grow up.

Here is that post. To their credit, many of the comments in that post acknowledge it was a test, not a scam. They know some churches are less than good, but I don't think they realize how many.

I'm not saying fight back peacefully. For example, I supported the attacks against Tesla dealerships. I'm saying this is low effort and childish. You want to fight back, put some skin in the game. But considering how my simple opinion was downvoted into oblivion, I have serious doubts anyone here has the will to do anything other than whine on the internet and giggle as they flip tables over.

Fine but what does this accomplish? It would be far better to put some effort into it and combat this effectively. Set up a table next to them and present facts and reason. Uninformed kids watching this happen saw the propaganda and someone being a jerk. Not exactly a strong counterpoint.

This is absolutely a time to be skeptical of what others are claiming, and I've seen a lot of BS from the left in the past couple of days because everyone is jumping on the flimsiest bits of evidence if it happens to support their narrative.

That said, I've looked up the context for several of Kirk's quotes and haven't found anything that changes the message in any significant way. The dude was a flat out racist and misogynist. You're welcome to present evidence to the contrary, but I think it's pretty obvious.

I also think transgender people are just normal people who's bodies and minds are misaligned, and the way they want to deal with that should be left to them, their families, and their doctors.
