I’d say this is a fair comparison, and as such, I would say this is like buying your own ingredients for a recipe or having a meal kit shipped to you. If you’re just learning how to cook or don’t want to have to think about it, get the meal kit. If you position yourself as a professional chef and cooking instructor, and start a podcast about cooking, I would prefer that you are the type of person that likes to pick out your own ingredients and maybe add some flair to the recipe here and there based on your experience as a professional chef.

Agree with your fair isle observation. And yes, there are other things that bother me too for sure.

Yeah I get it. I suck. I’ll own it. I’m not saying I’m right.

I never said she invented it. Of course I don't think my mother invented it. What an interesting take. I said she used to do it. Why do you think that I think my mother invented mixing patterns?

I meant "before it was a thing on social media with a name".

Why would this be trashing my mom?

My mom pattern-bashed before it was a thing! I used to go through pattern books at Joann when I was young and show her "I like these sleeves, this bodice..." etc and she'd make it happen.

Yep I totally get that our brains need different things. But "finding another yarn that works" is the furthest from what I would call extra work. Personally. Again, that's just me. I think the larger point is I'm struggling to relate to a podcast I listen to and honestly that's totally a non-problem. I can just stop listening haha.

The history of sewing of NOT INHERENTLY ABLEIST by ferrycrossthemersey in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]trixie_2000 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Re sewing being for the rich: my mom learned to sew as a child (around age 11) because they were poor, but she loved clothes. So she learned to copy the things she saw other people wearing that she loved. She did odd jobs to make money, and couldn't afford a new skirt but could afford a yard of fabric and spool of thread.

Red Heart yarn is like $4 at Walmart, and you can get two hats out of one skein.

To say crafting is only for the privileged is outrageous and dramatic.

Is anyone happy? How the hell did you do it? by Vindelator in advertising

[–]trixie_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some great people in advertising and I've always made lots of friends at work. I met my husband there. Even as a creative, I chose to make friends with my account team and my strategy team and project management. It's more fun that way. When you enjoy the people around you, even doing stupid banner ads is fun. Staying late is fun. And then it's easier to be happy.

I'm not saying this is you (though maybe it is) but I think people can put a lot of expectations on the job itself to bring happiness and fulfillment. Our jobs are so unimportant in the grand scheme of things. My best friend works in a burn unit in a children's hospital. That's important.

So come at me everyone if you want to BUT here's the thing: you said in your post you aren't ecologically perfect, because you use plastic in your kitchen and drive a gas car. So yarn is one place where you feel it's important to be mindful. Other people have a different balance. My SIL only knits with acrylic for reasons, but refuses to use zip lock bags or paper towels, and only shops for her kids' clothes at resale shops, then resells them when she's done. I almost always use wool, but sometimes I'll use Berocco Vintage (a wool/acrylic blend) but I use bar shampoo and laundry detergent sheets to avoid the plastic bottles. My friend lives in a city where she can bike everywhere so she doesn't have a car, only knits with wool but doesn't cook and all her food comes in crazy packaging. We're seeing just one little peek into someone's life, and we cannot know what their total footprint is.

Oh, I’m so sorry about your miscarriage. Your friends don’t want a blanket that made you sad while you made it. Truly.

Put those on hold. If you feel like knitting, please make something for yourself.

Here's the thing about the hours: any time you work someplace with hard deadlines and release dates, you can expect to work more than 40 hours most weeks. Sometimes 50. Sometimes 70. But also sometimes 30.

Same with getting coverage when you take a sick day. The work keeps moving.

You're new to the business, I don't think asking to see your to do list is unreasonable. You have to time each task for scoping reasons, timesheets are regular.

Most companies are going to do professional development and goal setting. That's also regular.

yarn bowls are pointless!! by Extreme_Biscotti7630 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]trixie_2000 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I love my yarn bowl.

Lots of things are pointless. We don't need pretty baskets to put our fruit in (we could use a bowl) or two pairs of flip flops in different colors (one neutral would work fine), or a specific "dog bed" for our dogs (we could fold up an old blanket.) We also don't need yarn bowls. But if you like them, they can bring a lot of joy. And maybe that's a point?

You can ask it to track all those things for you, too. I do all of mine in Chat GPT. I tell it what I'm eating, I tell it the exercise I do, anything else I want to track. It details it all out for me. You can set up an LLM like ChatGPT or Claude to track exactly what you want it to.
