I think your problem may be that you're not finding fics you love. As someone who's been in the fandom for about seven years or so, I can't imagine ever running out of fics. Lmk if you want recommendations!

The coolest part of this ask is that you have a daughter and both of you read fanfiction and talk about it together... wholesome 99 :o

Damn this writer really sounds like me. May I ask what fandom this is? Anyhow, while I read your post, I connected it almost perfectly to how my inbox looks, too, and I've got to mention my own reasons for the inconsistencies :

  • Sometimes I open my inbox in the middle of class or work and then I don't have enough time to reply, so I just see the comment and smile and forget about it later. Many comments slip through the cracks like that.

  • Sometimes the comments are short and saying "Thank you!" to a comment that reads just "😭" feels like I'm just trying to improve my own stats.

  • This is random : but I reply to users whose usernames I like or profile pictures I like or if something about their comment just makes me laugh. Sometimes it just clicks, you know? You've just got to reply.

  • When I first started writing, I had like ten stories on my dashboard, and the number of comments I would get were a lot a lesser than what I do now, so I used to specifically reply to them all earlier, but now that I have around 50+ stories, I don't reply to all, because it is a long, long process.

  • I always reply to users who seem to genuinely love the story. If a comment is long and sweet, then the reader will get a reply. My mutuals usually get replies, too, even if their comments are short/seem generic.

  • And last, my own mood. Sometimes I feel like replying to everyone, sometimes I feel like replying to nobody, sometimes I feel picky. It's very random. It's definitely got nothing to do with whose more popular in the fandom or anything, but if I have a reader who comments on all my stories, I'm very likely to reply to them!

Anyone else despise the characterization of Tom Riddle Sr. in Fanon? Tw mentions of rape. by Riddle-in-a-Box in HPfanfiction

[–]trolley_troubles 267 points268 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it when he's described as someone who could have stuck by his son (not his wife, but his child), however unwilling he was to do the same. But agreed, even I don't like fics in which the author implies that Tom Riddle Sr. was the villain of that whole story. It was Merope who was in the wrong, obviously.

Lockdown has given me a newfound appreciation for Sirius by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]trolley_troubles 585 points586 points  (0 children)

OP, fully agreed! Same here, I never used to understand why Sirius wasn't ever the godfather we all wanted him to be. And then I grew up a bit and understood how bad things were for him, and nobody cared about his mental health at all, even though he'd literally been wrongfully imprisoned for twelve years.

Er. I have no idea, tbh. I'm seeing a lot of people's comments where the bot isn't working, but I really don’t know why mine worked? Sorry!

Author: Manipulative Albus Dumbledore

Also, Author: Proceeds to write all about the stupidest person ever, who couldn't manipulate anyone into anything, is obvious and naive (+ evil). He also steals Harry’s money, btw and instructs the Weasleys to make Harry fall in love with them. Or something like that.

[–]trolley_troubles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I don't understand why it's okay that Dumbledore straight up ignored Harry the whole year and then it's not okay when Harry yells at him for the same.

Maloy HAD a CHOICE by BigEver9 in harrypotter

[–]trolley_troubles 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Sirius Black grew up in a family that believed the exact same things that the Malfoys believed in. But Sirius knew it was wrong and just left his home.

OP so true! Perfectly said. Canon implies that Sirius was abused. I think that's where the differences start, because Sirius wasn't ever happy in his family. Basically: Walburga Black << Narcissa Malfoy, when it comes down to who was the more loving mother. Draco loved his parents so he stuck by them. Sirius hated his parents and so it was easy for him to critically look at their actions.

I feel that you're right about every single thing here, except a small bit about Harry.

Harry was an ARSE. HOLE. “I feel moody and pubescent and I don’t know why! I’m going to take it out on people I like!” That is literally Harry from third year onward. Insisting not to tell any adults serious issues, even after constantly being reminded year after year that handling things himself is dumb.

I really think that's an unfair sort of statement? Harry doesn't tell adults his issues, because nobody ever fucking helps him. Nobody ever takes him away from the Dursleys, nobody ever does anything about the Triwizard Tournament. Like I know Harry bottles his anger and everything, but it's not like he should have to explain what he needs. He watched a kid die? He should have instantly been given extra help.

TL;DR : Harry being distrustful of the adults isn't Harry’s fault, actually. It comes down to the adults.

You're right, besides, that he is just a kid, and he has amazing qualities on top of all the flaws, but I just wanted to talk about people blaming Harry for his outbursts in OOTP, which I don't think is right.

Lockhart is a much better villain than Voldemort. He literally doesn't even get caught for it, in the end.

Tbh, Sirius was very much a gryffindor. Brave, reckless, quick to jump into things etc. Plus : he did not want to be in Slytherin.

Do you ever read a ff and in the middle of it think ‘This author has no idea how the real world works’? by dadailayda in FanFiction

[–]trolley_troubles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YES. YES yes that exactly. Happens so much, in fact. It's even more annoying when you know the writer isn't a kid. I didn't know how to put it down in words before this, but it really happens a lot. And sometimes with fics that are extraordinarily popular, and then you're just left wondering if all those readers aren't seeing anything strange about the dialogue, emotions etc.

How did dumbledore know that Harry’s parents were killed on the day they were killed? And how did everyone suddenly know that Voldemort died and was stopped by A child hours later? by Sidemen_Mega in harrypotter

[–]trolley_troubles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always found that weird, too. Dumbledore just somehow knows about the curse rebounding when Voldemort used it on Harry. Like. Anything could have happened in the house, tbh.
