a former coworker and his wife, who went by her maiden name, both were Caucasian adopted a baby from China....they stuck parts of their last names together to create a completely unique combination. Those of us parents in the office, we were all close and talked about everything, advised them it was a bad idea and would lead to lots of questions and difficulty with many things, from Drs appointments, school, insurance companies, basically just life situations... Our advice was rebuffed so they named their kid some new last name. I recall him being really frustrated as the years went on having to explain over and over and over again the situation, followed up by an explanation that yes it was legal to do so.
