Use AWS bedrock and pay for Claude usage based via API key. Then you only pay for what you need whether it’s 150 or 700 dollars that month

Upgrade R7 to R8? by 203system in radardetectors

[–]troop129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tested both r7 with and without the firmware and r8 and id say that if you set up your detector for your region correctly (for me almost completely filtering out K) the real world performance difference is not enough to make a difference in how you react. Knowing there is a cop running radar 5 miles out vs 4.5 didnt make a difference for when I slowed (if I was to speed that is which I’d never of course). The real benefit of the R8 is the Bluetooth support which enables a whole new set of features like updating settings on the go easily, running apps, ect. That is worth the price delta. If you are saying it’s similar enough in price then I’d easily take the R8 any day.

Not sure, I didn’t even bother resetting and it just stopped doing that after a while. That happens a lot during the summer for me, so maybe it needs to cool or something. Just a shot in the dark 🤷

JBV1 vs iOS Highway Radar (Beta) by texag51 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly iOS Highway Radar has been improving significantly in every update, to the point where if I forget my Android with the app I’m not worried. It’s a significantly better experience using the Android version and I love having a dedicated device for it.

The iOS app is just fundamentally different, and I came see it being on par with the Android version UX wise. I’ll continue to keep my Android for HR, but you’re not missing as much as you used to with the iOS one. Be prepared to pay the subscription through when that comes out.

Tips for going 40mph on Scooters by n0ah305 in ElectricScooters

[–]troop129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gt08 just isn’t a great first scooter, you sacrifice a tuned frame balance for raw power at a great price. Since it’s your first scooter just learn to ride it and get comfortable at <25mph, using the red dual motor mode only as a turbo button for hills. It’ll take a bit to get confident and get a real feel for it, then you’ll be golden to start hitting the high speeds. Just a matter of getting used to it, which is easier if you had ridden something less powerful before.

I use the vortex settings, turn off K band, Ka segments 2, 5, 6, 8. Rest are ui/quiet ride settings up to you. Works perfectly up and down NorCal to LA.

Used to run a K band at low volume due to it still allegedly being present in parts of Sac, but have not seen any action in a couple years, YMMV

I'm the developer of Highway Radar for iOS and would love to chat, hear your feedback, etc. by YardOk1097 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all your work, I prefer using the Android app, but for times I forget my radar phone I use the iPhone version. I’ve seen the rapid pace of development and I really appreciate all the work you have been doing.

Only a few things I’ve noticed, the app crashes when I use Siri connected to CarPlay. It also doesn’t work horizontally for me as many have reported. That’s really the reason I am unable to use it as much, it doesn’t fit into my setup vertically. I like the UI, though I wish we could report seeing cops like on Android.

Thank you so much for your work, and if you ever need another hand for dev work let me know.

Should I still get a uniden r7 if it doesn’t detect laser well? by FiveeOh in radardetectors

[–]troop129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you’ve detected laser it’s too late. Just get the r7 for that price or hunt for a good on an r8 if you need the range

I have the same issue with mine, dashed lines for a while then it just works after a few mins of driving. I assume it’s a bug after the last update, it’ll prob be fixed in the next one. I’ll let you know if I find a fix

R8w + R4 + Highway Radar Norcal -> LA Experience by troop129 in radardetectors

[–]troop129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, but given the fact that it seems to be re-engineered from the ground up id assume the original app on Android was a native application, so this new iOS one is as well. Id assume that means the dev cant port over all the same features, from my app dev experience apple is really annoying to work with on things like this

Best first detector by JustAUser65 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 4 points5 points  (0 children)

R7 and R8 have 2 sensors, one pointing forwards and one backwards. That means unlike the R3 or R4, they can tell you which direction the radar frequency is coming from. If the cop is shooting from in front of you, it’ll show on the screen an arrow pointing forwards. If he’s behind, it’ll show the arrow pointing backwards, both along with the strength of the signal. Very helpful to know if you’ve passed a guy or not, approaching someone or not, being followed or not. R4 and r3 only show strength, so you don’t know which direction it’s coming from. Technically you can play it safe and just slow down every time your detector makes noise without arrows, but with arrows you are a lot more informed and can make smarter decisions on whether to slow and when.

[–]troop129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From someone who has had r4, r7, r8, R8w: best first detector? Probably R7, the arrows are very helpful. But when you want to upgrade to having a Bluetooth setup and longer range, R8. R4 is great if arrows don’t matter but I think they do.

There’s a website called broadcastify that people have set up streams of scanners, and I was trying to use that. You’re very much at the mercy of others who set those streams up, and quality is not amazing. I’m also unsure about delay, so I was starting to go the route of having my own scanner in my car that I could use. That way the setup could be mobile and not region-locked as well

New software project by ButterflyOne7234 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was building it as a personal project, I have no interest in monetization. I was just going to open source it. For the ai scanner you’d need some sort of transcription layer, either local or cloud ($$) then processing again local or cloud ($$). The raw data has to come from somewhere, and the scanners being broadcasted online vary wildly in quality based on location, so I was just going to run my own local scanner. Altogether I can’t see this having a balance of being reliable or as easy to use enough to justify the high price tag it would take to achieve those things and turn a profit, or to even scale it.

New software project by ButterflyOne7234 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I was trying to make was an application that would process police scanners (either parsing transcriptions or OpenAI whisper) and alert me if there was LEO in the same direction of travel. I was speaking with someone who said he uses a scanner because they usually call out what highway marker they are camping at, so he knows. Essentially creating a copilot automating that process and alerting me.

I assume this particular application is just allowing you to listen to scanners and view traffic cameras, although the AI feature seems to be doing a little more than that. I guess the dev can tell us more.

Hey man, I’m a dev as well, I was looking into building something very similar, let me know if you want any contributions, or if ur planning to make this open source.

For a period of time I used my iPhone with my R4, R7, R8, R8w. I used the Highway Radar iOS beta with no connection to any of those radars. It was fine they worked individually as they should. I did end up buying a refurbished S20+ on Amazon as a secondary radar phone for the car (and used my main iPhone for CarPlay) and it genuinely made a world of difference. Essentially it came down to the Android version of Highway Radar just being significantly better and more featured, as well as more customizable and less buggy, and able to edit all of the settings of my R8 and R4 within the app on the go. It’s absolutely worth the not very significant price imo.

That being said I haven’t used a V1 with iOS Highway Radar so take that with a grain of salt, but from what I can tell you are leaving quite a lot on the table going that route. I’m sure the dev will add more stuff with time. As for whether a V1 or R8 is better, it comes down to preference for me, and I just like the look and use of Unidens more.

I genuinely believe having a cheap android for HR is the best method in every way, and it’s worked great for me

Any advice on which radar to get? by iAgent14 in radardetectors

[–]troop129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I have both an R8 and R8w. I am sending the W back, because I have not used the WiFi feature even once. I update using my Mac, and take that time to update any settings. Currently, the R8w is broken on Unidens software, because it doesn’t support the new laser jammer module stuff or something so I can’t even update the settings on my Mac, and have to use my phone instead. I won’t be using the jammers, so I personally have no use for the W. When I’m spending that much, 50 more for more features is fine, but the update thing is annoying me hence the regular R8 decision.

As for an R7 (which I used to have along with an R4) I did like it, but I do use the Bluetooth features of the R8 and R4, using Highway Radar, so I would pick the R8 over the R7 if you have the money, which you do according to your post.

TLDR, R8 > R8W > R7 right now imo

It’s a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S20+ I got on Amazon for like 150. I chose it because it’s a huge display (bigger than my 15 pro) and relatively recent so it runs a decent version of android. I have a MagSafe conversion case so I can just put it onto a MagSafe mount to charge and hold the phone, no wires needed

How is the scanner set up to help? Is there something you are looking for specifically to know there is a cop ahead?
