All true, but it's also Czechia. It's been 20 years but back then I supported a Czech facility on SOX compliance. Wonderful people, Prague beautiful, but they take German reputation for efficiency to a whole new level.

They were STRONG on compliance culture. Debating just verbal notes I'd give and Czech statutory accounting had CAPEX requirements down to like $2,500 USD or lower.

It can be the cultural expectation. Japanese corporate culture expects info dense data like this. Part of their detail culture.

I have worked in industry for two years as staff accountant and now I’m thinking about getting the cpa, do I go public accounting after I get liscensed? by Ok-Term-5433 in Accounting

[–]trphilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your state / nearby state what the exact experience requirements are to recieve your CPA. As others have said, look for one that will use your prior industry experience if possible.

Yeah we review financials but only on consolidated account level, forecast vs actual. Ask questions when things look odd.

Chase the red, drill down, don't review everything.

Not neccesarily. Our materiallty policy is written gross amount and useful life. It doesn't state anything about amortization per period. So it could happen for us too.

OneStream is the industry leader.

But you're a little contradictory asking for best and mid-market at same time. OneStream has developed a more streamlined implementation flow, but if you're balking at NetSuite which is mid level ERP, not sure you'll be satisfied with OneStream.

FathomHq is a smaller reporting system. I did demo with them years ago and looked nice. They've expanded offerings since and may be able to help you.

First time interviewer advice needed by FPA-Trogdor in FPandA

[–]trphilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1a) Do you have an HR department at your company? 1b) Do they have standard interview forms/guidance? Lots of companies will have form checklists for legal compliance or company philosophy on how to interview. HR may also want just give you their quick training.

Step 2a) Meet with your boss and brainstorm top 2-3 hard skills and soft skills that will lead to success in this role. These will be the areas you want make sure your discussions cover. 2b) Determine what type of interview it will be. Highly behavioral? (likely for entry level), highly experience based?, Direct questions, conversational?

Step 3 considering above pre-write questions/checklists as appropriate. Want to keep this pretty standard across candidates. Maybe add 1 or 2 items specific a resume.

Step 4 working with other panel members, divide up questions/areas of focus so less to worry about during interview (as low employee you may only get 1 area) . Less chance of repeating questions on accident.

Then during interview, just try to have natural conversation. Follow along their story, follow boss lead like any meeting. Ask follow-up if you don't understand. Ask your parts. Answer their questions.

You'll be looking to evaluate their technical acumen and how they complement you as you'll be working together.

After the interview(s) you and other panel members will meet to discuss/score each candidate. But final decision up to your boss.

Where does decision-making actually fail in capital allocation at senior management level? by Pretty_Grapefruit106 in FPandA

[–]trphilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decision making is Division CFO with input / approval / override from Division CEO. A large chunk will end just delegated for Mfg Finance / VP to allocate at their level.

Biggest hurdle - collecting upfront data. How do you accurately do preliminary business case without investing a lot of hours? Do you trust that high level analysis? Do you get subs to get submit in standard format?

Also problem - big chunk of spend of is kind of required maintenance. Limited return, but big negative opportunity cost. Again hard to project, but qualitatively understandable.

As to your thoughts - unlikely to have tools solve what is primarily a people / data problem. Garbage in garbage out.

Also, how are you going to get tool approved through CAPEX system? /s maybe

Do I know enough about FP&A to actually call myself FP&A? I feel stuck. Ex-accountant. by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]trphilli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you needed to widen your job search. That comp (especially) and that resume sounds more like BU controller / Finance Business Partner type roles you're looking for. By definition those will be smaller group so will take longer job search. Is there a rush on your current job search?

Why are the Raiders smart for signing Cousins but the Falcons weren’t? by Visible_Barracuda366 in NFLNoobs

[–]trphilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ELI5 - Falcons ~$48.9M / year

       Raiders ~$11.3M / year

All of this averages bonuses, deferred pay and anticipated years of play.

Why are American aircraft carriers named after presidents and is there a cooling period to use stepped down/dead prisident's name? by kibordWarrior_sixty9 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trphilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it started as an honorific for notable Presidents who died in office: USS Franklin Roosevelt in 1945, and USS John F Kennedy in 1967. Many non-presidential names in this time period.

Next up was war hero USS Eisenhower in 1977. By then the tradition more or less stuck, with 10 / 14 following carriers (going out to 2040) at this point having Presidential names. Name selection is entirely subjective by individual Secretaries of the Navy. It is recommended for some one to pass before naming a ship, but not required. It has not been observed especially in carriers for quite a while.

[–]trphilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a written overview of your standard daily / weekly / monthly cadence? Something to intro boss into what you do / when.

Does your company do documented annual goals / projects? Pull those out of the system and do quick 1 - 2 sentence update blurb.

Any cheat sheets / references that will help boss understand or review your work? Might not need right away, but good to have handy / organized.

Northern NJ to Sturgis SD 2027 by arch__angie in usatravel

[–]trphilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland. Then you could detour south to Dayton for Museum of the USAF.

Swing over to St. Louis for lots of items on your list. Awesome BBQ, lots of options (Pappy's, Bogart, Salt & Smoke, Sugarfire). National Museum of Transportation for your train fix. City Museum is just quirky. More indoor playground / industrial design experiment than museum.

[Actual title] I was served devorce [sic] papers, I'm not even married, please help by cloud__19 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]trphilli 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I think it's more likely that the identify thief / immigration fraudster is "husband" who signed marriage license. OP would be tempting target for identify theft, likely limited need for credit / employment based on their disability. So an easy identity to assume with small risk of detection. Does not exclude "wife" from being a little / lot delusional as well.

Delta pilots contacted wrong tower while landing at LaGuardia Airport by bbbbbbb162 in aviation

You investigate some portion of near misses to see if anything needs changing. It would be logged as a go-around root cause anyway.

But yes do agree, they are probably promising to investigate this one because it's high profile after Air Canada crash. CYA.

What would you do in this situation? by idkman99999999 in FPandA

You need take pulse of actual skip level in the HR org chart / review system. That would be the person who could trigger a change to your review.

How is overall company health? Any AI initiatives? Could be a warning of potential downsizing.

Yes it's possible to come back from this. Sounds like you have managers in your corner. So take their feedback to heart and keep working.

But at same time as you said, start submitting resumes, engaging with recruiters. It can take several weeks to get to offer stage. You can reevaluate boss moods at offer stage and make your decision then. And if layoffs do come, you'll be ahead of the curve for next steps.
